इति श्रुत्वा स शल्यांशः सुयोधनमुखेरितम् आह्लादस्य समीपं स गत्वैतद्वंचनाय हि
Having heard this, Shalya's portion, spoken by Suyodhana, went to Ahlada for this deception.
भवन्तोंशावताराश्च मया ज्ञाताः सुरोत्तमात् रामांशाय स्वकन्यां च दास्यामि कुलरीतितः
I have learned from the best of gods that you are all partial incarnations; according to family custom, I will give my daughter to Rama's portion.
इत्याह्रादं समादिश्य स नृपश्छलमाश्रितः
Thus instructing Ahlada, the king resorted to deceit.
सहस्रं मंडपे भूपान्संस्थाप्य स्वबलैः सह
He placed a thousand kings in the pavilion along with his own forces.
विवाहप्रथमावर्ते योगसिंहोऽसिमुत्तमम्
At the first round of the marriage, Yogasimha held the excellent sword.
तमाह तालनो धीमान्न योग्यं भवता कृतम् निरायुधैः परैः सार्द्धं शस्त्रिणां संगरो हि नः
The wise Talana said to him: 'What you have done is not proper; a contest among armed men with unarmed ones is not for us.'
इति श्रुत्वा योगसिंहं कृष्णांशस्तं समारुधत् 3.3.13.
Hearing this, Krishna's portion mounted upon Yogasimha.
विजयं तृतीयावर्ते सुखखानिर्न्यरुंद्ध वै रूपणस्तं गृहीत्वाशु युयुधे तद्बलैः सह
In the third round, Vijaya blocked the path of happiness; Rupan quickly seized him and fought together with his forces.
पंचमे बहुराजानं तालनश्च समारुधत्
In the fifth round, Talana mounted against the many kings.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे देवः कालदर्शी समागतः
Meanwhile, the god who sees time arrived.
बिन्दुलं चैव कृष्णांशो देवस्तत्र मनोरथम्
There, the god Krishna's portion and Bindula desired the same.
हरिणीं बलखानिश्च तद्भ्राता हरिनागरम्
The brother of Hari, Balakhani, and Harinagara.
रात्रौ तन्नृपतेः सेनां हत्वा बद्ध्वा च तत्पतिम्
At night, they slew the army of that king and bound their lord as well.
स्वसैन्यं ते समाजग्मुर्निर्भया बलवत्तराः
Their own army then arrived, fearless and stronger.
निगडैरेकतः कृत्वा पञ्च भूपान्हि वंचकान्
They fastened together with chains those five deceitful kings.
नेत्रसिंहो वरो भ्राता सुन्दरारण्यभूमिपः 3.3.13.
Netrasiṃha, the noble brother and lord of Sundarāraṇya, was among them.
तत्रागत्य हरानन्दो नाम्ना तानयुधद्बली । । नेत्रसिंहस्य सैन्यं च चतुर्लक्षं तदागमत्
There arrived Harānanda by name, mighty in battle; and the army of Netrasiṃha, numbering four hundred thousand, came at that time.
पञ्चलक्षै रणो घोरः सप्तलक्षयुतैरभूत् अर्द्धसैन्यं रिपोस्तत्र हतशेषमदुद्रुवत्
A fierce battle took place with five hundred thousand and seven hundred thousand warriors; half the enemy's army, the survivors of the slaughter, fled there.
विस्मितः स हरानन्दो रुद्रमायाविशारदः ।। बलाधिक्ययुताञ्ज्ञात्वा शिवध्यानपरोऽभवत्
Astonished, Harānanda, skilled in Rudra's magic, knowing the enemy's superior strength, devoted himself to meditation on Śiva.
रचित्वा शांबरीं मायां नानारूपविधारिणीम् । । पाषाणभूतान्सकलान्कृत्वा भूपान्समाययौ
Having created the magic of Śambara, capable of taking many forms, he turned all the kings into stone and approached them.
ससुतं भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठं नृपं पूर्णबलं ततः
Then, with his son, his eldest brother, and the king with his full force—
रुरोदोच्चैस्तदा देवीं ध्यायंती कामरूपिणीम् । । तदा तुष्टा जगद्धात्री मूर्च्छितांस्तानबोधयत्
She then wept loudly, meditating on the goddess who assumes any form at will; the World-Mother, being pleased, awakened those who had fainted.
यथा बद्धः स्वयं स्वामी कथयामास सा तथा ।। अहं शुकी भवाम्यद्य भवान्बिंदुलसंस्थितः । ।। 3.3.13.१२
Just as the master, though bound, spoke for himself, so she said: 'Today I become a parrot, and you are situated in the moon.'
इत्युक्त्वा सा शुकी भूत्वा कृष्णांशेन समन्विता
Having spoken thus, she became a parrot, endowed with a portion of Kṛṣṇa.
आश्वास्य तं यथायोग्यं कृष्णांशं प्रत्यवर्णयत्
Having properly consoled him, she described the portion of Kṛṣṇa.
रक्षकाञ्छतसाहस्रान्हत्वा भ्रातरमाययौ । । पौर्णिमां मधुयुक्तां च ज्ञात्वा सर्वे त्वरान्विताः
Having slain a hundred thousand guards, she went to her brother; knowing the full-moon night filled with honey, all became eager.
स्नानध्यानादिका निष्ठाः कृत्वा गेहमुपाययुः ।। सागरस्य तटं प्राप्य कृत्वा ते च महोत्सवम् । । चैत्रस्य कृष्णपञ्चम्यां स्वगेहं पुनराययुः
Having completed their vows of bathing, meditation, and the like, they returned home; reaching the ocean's shore, they held a great festival; on the fifth day of the dark half of Caitra, they returned again to their own home.
दूता उष्ट्रसमारूढास्तत्क्षेमकरणोत्सुकाः । । वैशाखे शुक्लपंचम्यां स्वगेहं पुनराययुः
Messengers mounted on camels, eager to ensure their welfare, on the fifth day of the bright half of Vaiśākha, returned again to their own home.
मलना भूपतिश्चैव गेहेगेहे महोत्सवम् ।। कारयित्वा विधानेन ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ धनम्
Malanā and the king, in every house, had a great festival performed according to the rite, and gave wealth to the brāhmaṇas.
सूत उवाच चतुर्दशाब्दे कृष्णांशे यथा जातं तथा शृणु कलौ जन्मत्वमापन्नः स्वर्णवत्युदरेऽवसत्
Sūta said: In the fourteenth year, concerning the portion of Kṛṣṇa, listen to how it happened: in the Kali age, he took birth and dwelt in the womb of Svarṇavatī.
