इति श्रुत्वा सती देवी नमस्कृत्य महेश्वरीम्
Hearing this, the virtuous goddess bowed to Maheshvari.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे राजा देवमायाविमोहितः
Meanwhile, the king, bewildered by divine illusion—
तैर्बद्धो जम्बुको राजा निगडैरायसैर्दृढैः
King Jambuka was bound by them with strong iron fetters.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र कालियाद्यास्त्रयः सुताः
Meanwhile, there, the three sons—Kaliya and the others—
पुनर्युद्धमभूद्घोरं सेनयोरुभयोस्तदा
Then again there was a fierce battle between the two armies.
त्रीञ्छत्रून्कोष्ठकीकृत्य स्वशस्त्रैर्जघ्नुरूर्जिताः
Having confined three enemies in a cell, the mighty ones slew them with their own weapons.
कालियो दुःखितो भूत्वा सस्मार मनसा हरम्
Kaliya, afflicted by sorrow, remembered Hara in his mind.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी देवकी पतिदेवता 3.3.12.
At that very moment, the goddess Devaki, devoted to her husband—
बोधयित्वा तु कृष्णांशं पञ्चशब्दगजस्थितम् तदा तुष्टा स्वयं देवी बोधयामास तान्मुदा
Having awakened the portion of Krishna residing in the five-syllabled elephant, then the goddess herself, being pleased, joyfully awakened them.
आह्लादः सूर्यवर्माणं कालियं च ततोऽनुजः
Ahlada, Suryavarman, and Kaliya, his younger brother, then—
ते तु पूर्वभवे विप्र जरासंधः सकालियः
In their former birth, O Brahmin, Jarasandha was with Kaliya.
त्रिशिरास्तुदिलो जातः शृगालः स च जम्बुकः
Trishiras was born as a jackal, and that jackal was Jambuka.
हतेषु शत्रुपुत्रेषु देवकी जम्बुकं रिपुम्
When the sons of the enemy were slain, Devaki saw Jambuka, the foe.
कृष्णांशः शिरसी पित्रोर्गृहीत्वा स्नेहकातरः
The portion of Krishna, out of deep affection, took the heads of his parents.
विहस्य तौ तदा तत्र प्रोचतुर्वचनं प्रियम् इति वाणी तयोर्जाता बलिनो प्रेतदेहयोः
Then, smiling, they spoke sweet words there; thus speech arose between those two, powerful though in bodies of the dead.
खड्गहस्ता च सा देवी शिलायंत्रे तु तं रिपुम्
And that goddess, holding a sword in her hand, placed the enemy in the stone mechanism.
हे पुत्राः स्वपितुः शत्रुं जम्बुकं पुरुषाधमम्
"O sons, crush your father's enemy, Jambuka, the vilest of men."
संचूर्णयत तद्गात्रं तत्तैलैर्मदनिर्मितैः 3.3.12.
"Pulverize his body with those oils prepared from intoxication."
तथा कृत्वा तु ते पुत्रा महिषीं ससुतां तदा
Having done so, those sons then, along with the queen and her son—
तदा परिमलं राज्ञी दृष्ट्वा स्वामिनमातुरम्
Then the queen, seeing the fragrance, found her lord afflicted.
तत्सुता खड्गमानीय बलखानिभुजं प्रति
Her daughter, bringing a sword, went against Balakhani, the mighty-armed.
तालनं देवसिंहं च रामांशं च तथाविधम्
Talanam, Devasimha, and likewise Rama's portion in that manner—
कृष्णांशं मोहयित्वाशु मायया च समाहरत् तच्छिरश्च समाहृत्य चितायां च समाक्षिपत्
Having quickly bewildered Krishna's portion by illusion, she seized him; taking his head, she cast it onto the funeral pyre.
तदा वाणी समुत्पन्ना बलखाने शृणुष्व भोः
Then a voice arose, 'Hear, O Balakhani!'
फलमस्य विवाहे स्वे भोक्तव्यं पापकर्मणः
The fruit of this, in marriage, must be experienced by the one who has committed sinful deeds.
ततस्तु सैनिकाः सर्वे महाहर्षसमन्विताः
Then all the soldiers, filled with great joy,
महावतीं समाजग्मुः कृतकृ त्यत्वमागताः
came to the great city, having accomplished their purpose.
तत्पश्चात्स्व पुरीं प्राय तदा किमभवन्मुने
After that, they returned to their own city; what happened then, O sage?
ज्येष्ठे मासि गृहं प्राप्ता दध्मुर्वाद्यान्यनेकशः
In the month of Jyeshtha, they arrived at home and played many musical instruments.
श्रुत्वा परिमलो राजा स्वसुताञ्जयिनो बलीन्
Hearing this, King Parimala summoned his victorious sons and warriors.
