एवं कति दिनान्येव बभूव रण उत्तमः कृष्णांशं शरणं जग्मुस्तेन वीरेण मोहिताः
In this way, for just a few more days, the great battle continued; bewildered by that hero, they sought refuge in Krishna's portion.
कृष्णस्तु तं तथा दृष्ट्वा देवीं विश्वविमोहिनीम्
But Krishna, seeing her in that manner—the goddess who bewilders the universe—
तदा तुष्टा जगद्धात्री दुर्गा दुर्गार्तिनाशिनी
Then the Mother of the world, Durga, destroyer of distress, was satisfied.
निद्रया मोहितं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णांशस्तु महाबलः
Seeing him deluded by sleep, Krishna's portion, mighty in strength—
तुंदिलश्च तथा ज्ञात्वा भातृशोकपरिप्लुतः रिपुसैन्यस्य मध्ये तु बहुशूरानताडयत्
And Tundila, realizing this and overwhelmed by grief for his brother, struck down many valiant foes in the midst of the enemy army.
माहिष्मत्याश्च ते शूरा रंकणेन समन्विताः
And those heroes of Mahishmati, accompanied by Ramkana—
प्रद्रुतं स्वं बलं दृष्ट्वा तालनः परिघायुधः
Seeing his own troops fleeing, Talana, armed with an iron club—
वंकणं च तथा हत्वा खड्गेनैव च रंकणम्
Then, having slain Vankana and likewise Ramkana with his sword—
कालिये च रिपौ बद्धे सुबद्धे सूर्यवर्मणि
With the enemy Kaliya bound, and Suryavarman securely restrained—
सहस्रं म्लेच्छराजानो हतशेषा बलान्विताः 3.3.12.
A thousand barbarian kings, those remaining with their forces, were slain.
प्रत्यहं तालनो वीरः सेनापतिरमर्षणः
Every day, the heroic Talana, the unyielding commander, [fought].
भयभीता रिपोः शूरा हता भूपा हतौजसः
The enemy's warriors, terrified and their strength destroyed, were slain; the kings fell.
जम्बुकस्तु तथा श्रुत्वा दुःखितो गेहमाययौ
And Jambuka, having heard this, sorrowful, returned home.
निशीथे समनुप्राप्ते तत्सुता विजयैषिणी
When midnight arrived, his daughter, desiring victory—
आश्वास्य पितरं तं च ययौ मायाविशारदा
Having comforted her father, she, skilled in illusion, departed.
भ्रातरो तत्र गत्वासौ यत्र सर्वानबोधयत्
Her brothers went there, where she awakened them all.
निरस्त्रकवचान्बंधून्प्रतिदोलां समारुहत्
She mounted the palanquin, her relatives unarmed and without armor.
प्रभाते बोधिताः सर्वे स्नानध्यानादिकाः क्रियाः
At dawn, when all were awakened, they performed bathing, meditation, and other rites.
कृत्वा सा राक्षसीं मायां हृत्वा तान्गेहमाययौ ।। 3.3.12.
Having created that demoness by illusion, she carried her off and went to her own house.
विंध्योपरि महारण्ये नानासत्त्वनिषेविते इलविला योगसिद्धियुतः कामी राक्षसेभ्यो हि निर्भयः
On the Vindhya mountain, in a great forest frequented by many creatures, Ilavila, accomplished in yoga and desire, was fearless among the demons.
जम्बुकस्य सुता तत्र प्रत्यहं स्वजनैर्युता
There, the daughter of Jambuka, accompanied daily by her own people—
कृतेयं चैलविलिना माया मनुजमोहिनी इति श्रुत्वा तु चत्वारो विनाह्रादं ययुर्वनम्
This illusion, merged in a garment, was created to bewilder men; hearing this, the four, without Ahrada, went into the forest.
गीतनृत्यप्रवाद्यैश्च मोहयित्वा च त दिने
By singing, dancing, and performances, they enchanted him that day.
तयोर्मध्ये प्रमाणोऽयं विवाहो मे यदा भवेत्
Among them, this is the rule: when my marriage takes place—
हते तस्मिन्महाधूर्ते गत्वा संग्राममूर्द्धनि हत्वा तत्र स्थितान्वीराञ्छतघ्न्यः परिखाकृताः
When that great villain was slain, going to the head of the battle, they killed the heroes stationed there, and the moat-makers who destroyed hundreds.
तदा तु जम्बुको राजा शिवदत्तवरो बली शैवं यज्ञं च कृतवांस्तेषां नाम्नोपबृंहितम्
Then King Jambuka, the mighty best of the blessed, performed a Shaiva sacrifice, enhanced by their names.
रूपणस्तु तथा ज्ञात्वा देवकीं प्रत्यवर्णयत् मनसा च जगामाशु शरण्यां शरणं सती
Rupana, having understood thus, described Devaki, and in his mind swiftly sought refuge in the gracious one.
तदा तुष्टा जगाद्धात्री स्वप्नांते तामवर्णयत् 3.3.12.
Then the pleased Mother of the World described her at the end of a dream.
यदा तु जम्बुको राजा शिवदत्तवरो बली
When King Jambuka, the mighty best of the blessed—
मोहयित्वा तदाहं तं मोचयित्वा च ते सुतान्
Then, having enchanted him, I freed his sons.
