रंकणो वंकणश्चोभौ चतुर्लक्षपदातिभिः दाक्षिणात्यग्रामपास्ते तौ पुरस्कृत्य संययुः
Both Rankana and Vankana, with four hundred thousand infantry, led the southern village troops and advanced.
उभे सेने समासाद्य युद्धाय समुपस्थिते
When both armies met, battle was imminent.
त्रियामे रुधिरैस्तेषां नदी प्रावर्तत द्रुतम् बलखानिरमेयात्मा खङ्गपाणिर्नरो ययौ
In the third watch, their blood swiftly formed a river; the warrior Balakhani, immeasurable in spirit, went forth with sword in hand.
भल्लहस्तस्तदा देवो मनोरथहये स्थितः
Then the god, holding a spear, stood upon a chariot drawn by his desires.
आह्लादश्च गदाहस्तः पोथयामास वाहिनीम् तालनो हस्तनिस्त्रिंशो माहिष्मत्यां हनन्ययौ
Āhlāda, wielding a mace, struck the troops; Tālano, with a sword in hand, went to Māhiṣmatī to slay.
एवं महाभये जाते रणे तस्मिन्महाबले
Thus, when great fear arose in that battle among the mighty forces,
प्रभग्नं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा कालियो बलखानिकम्
Seeing his own army broken, Kāliya confronted Balakhani.
हरिणी वडवा तस्य ज्ञात्वा स्वामिनमातुरम्
The mare, knowing her master was distressed,
पतिते कालिये वीरे पंचशब्दो महागजः
When the valiant Kāliya fell, the great elephant named Paṃcaśabda,
मूर्च्छिते पंचशूरे तु रूपणो भयकातरः 3.3.12.
When the five heroes were unconscious, Rūpaṇa, terrified by fear,
तदा तु दुःखिता देवी दोलामारुह्य सत्वरा
Then the grieving queen quickly mounted the palanquin.
गजराज नमस्तुभ्यं शक्रदत्त महाबल
O king of elephants, salutations to you, mighty one given by Indra.
इति श्रुत्वा दिव्यगजो देवमायाविशारदः
Hearing this, the celestial elephant, skilled in divine magic,
इत्युक्ते गजराजे तु कृष्णांशो बलवत्तरः
When the king of elephants was addressed thus, the powerful portion of Krishna,
तमुत्थाप्य करस्पर्शैर्बलखानिसमन्वितः कराल मन्दं स्मितं रूपणाय तदा ददौ
Raising him with a touch of his hands, accompanied by Balakhani, Karāla gave a gentle smile to Rūpaṇa.
मूर्च्छितं कालियं शत्रुं बद्ध्वा स निगडैर्दृढैः
He bound the unconscious enemy Kāliya with strong shackles.
सूर्यवर्मा तदा ज्ञात्वा बद्धं बंधुं च कालियम्
Sūryavarmā, knowing that his kinsman Kāliya was bound,
तमायान्तं समालोक्य ते वीरा युद्धदुर्मदाः
Seeing him approaching, those warriors, intoxicated by battle,
कुंठितेऽस्त्रे तदा तेषां विस्मितास्तेऽभवन्मुने
When their weapons were blunted, they became astonished, O sage.
तस्यास्त्रैस्ते महावीरा व्रणार्तिभयपीडिताः 3.3.12.
By his weapons, those great heroes were afflicted with wounds, pain, and fear.
एवं कति दिनान्येव बभूव रण उत्तमः कृष्णांशं शरणं जग्मुस्तेन वीरेण मोहिताः
In this way, for just a few more days, the great battle continued; bewildered by that hero, they sought refuge in Krishna's portion.
कृष्णस्तु तं तथा दृष्ट्वा देवीं विश्वविमोहिनीम्
But Krishna, seeing her in that manner—the goddess who bewilders the universe—
तदा तुष्टा जगद्धात्री दुर्गा दुर्गार्तिनाशिनी
Then the Mother of the world, Durga, destroyer of distress, was satisfied.
निद्रया मोहितं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णांशस्तु महाबलः
Seeing him deluded by sleep, Krishna's portion, mighty in strength—
तुंदिलश्च तथा ज्ञात्वा भातृशोकपरिप्लुतः रिपुसैन्यस्य मध्ये तु बहुशूरानताडयत्
And Tundila, realizing this and overwhelmed by grief for his brother, struck down many valiant foes in the midst of the enemy army.
माहिष्मत्याश्च ते शूरा रंकणेन समन्विताः
And those heroes of Mahishmati, accompanied by Ramkana—
प्रद्रुतं स्वं बलं दृष्ट्वा तालनः परिघायुधः
Seeing his own troops fleeing, Talana, armed with an iron club—
वंकणं च तथा हत्वा खड्गेनैव च रंकणम्
Then, having slain Vankana and likewise Ramkana with his sword—
कालिये च रिपौ बद्धे सुबद्धे सूर्यवर्मणि
With the enemy Kaliya bound, and Suryavarman securely restrained—
सहस्रं म्लेच्छराजानो हतशेषा बलान्विताः 3.3.12.
A thousand barbarian kings, those remaining with their forces, were slain.
