त्वया जिताहं भगवन्बलेर्विप्रियकारिणः
O Lord, I have been conquered by you, who act contrary to Bali’s wishes.
वीरभुक्ता सदा नारी स्त्रीरत्नं मुनिभिः स्मृतम् एका सा प्रकृतिर्माता गुणसाम्यात्सनातनी
A woman who is always enjoyed by heroes is called a jewel among women by the sages; she alone is the original mother, eternal by the equality of qualities.
सत्त्वभूता च भगि नी रजोभूता च गेहिनी
When she is of the nature of sattva, she is called Bhaginī; when of rajas, she is called Gehinī.
बहवः पुरुषा ये वै निर्गुणाश्चैकरूपिणः
There are many men who are formless and of a single nature.
अलोके पापजास्सर्वे देवब्रह्मसमुद्भवाः कोऽपि पुत्रः पिता भ्राता स च तस्याः पतिर्भवेत्
All those born of sin in darkness, originating from the gods and Brahmā—anyone may be a son, a father, or a brother, and he may become her husband.
स्वकीयां च सुतां ब्रह्मा विष्णुदेवः स्वमातरम्
Brahmā took his own daughter, Viṣṇu his own mother, as wife.
इति श्रुत्वा वेदमयं वाक्यं चादितिसंभवः
Having heard these words, filled with the Vedas, the son of Aditi—
सुताः कन्यास्तयोर्जाता मनुर्वैवस्वतस्तथा
Their daughters were born as children, as was Manu, son of Vivasvān.
तदा संज्ञा सती साक्षात्तेजोभूतं पतिं स्वकम् 3.4.18.
Then Saṃjñā herself, being true, accepted her radiant husband.
सावर्णिश्च मनुस्तस्यां शनिश्च तपती तथा
From her were born Sāvarṇi Manu, Śani, and also Tapatī.
पुत्रभेदेन तां नारीं मत्वा मायां रुषान्वितः
Mistaking that woman for Māyā due to the separation from his son, he became filled with anger.
तदा शनिश्च सावर्णिर्विवस्वतं रुषान्वितम्
Then Śani and Sāvarṇi, both angered, approached Vivasvat.
कियतो चैव कालेन भग्नभूतौ विवस्वता
After some time had passed, Vivasvat was left broken and distressed.
त्रिवर्षान्ते च सा देवी महाकाली समागता
At the end of three years, that goddess Mahākālī appeared.
पुनस्तौ च समागम्य युयुधाते विवस्वता
Then, after coming together again, they fought with Vivasvat.
तत्र स्थिता प्रिया संज्ञा वडवारूपधरिणी
There, his beloved Saṃjñā stood, taking the form of a mare.
गत्वा ददर्श भगवान्सज्ञां संबोधकारिणीम्
Having gone there, the blessed one saw Saṃjñā, who brings understanding.
पंचवर्षान्तरे संज्ञा गर्भं तस्माद्दधौ स्वयम्
After five years, Saṃjñā herself conceived a child from him.
पितुर्दुःखं समालोक्य जग्मतू रविमण्डलम् 3.4.18.
Seeing their father's sorrow, they went to the orb of the Sun.
बद्ध्वा तौ स्वपितुः पार्श्वम संप्राप्तौ वडवासुतौ
Having bound them, the two sons of the mare came to their father's side.
संपीड्य ताडयामास लोहदंडैर्भयानकैः
He pressed and struck them with terrifying iron rods.
आश्विनेयौ समालोक्य वचनं प्राह तौ मुदा एकनाम्ना युवां प्रीतौ नासत्यौ च भविष्यथः
Seeing the two Aśvins, he spoke to them joyfully: 'You both, with one name and in affection, will become the Nāsaṭyas.'
सोमशक्तिरिडादेवी ज्येष्ठपत्नी भविष्यति
Somaśakti, the goddess Iḍā, will become the eldest wife.
इडापतिस्स वै नाम द्वितीयः पिंगलापतिः तस्य शान्तिकरो ज्येष्ठो भविष्यति महीतले
Her husband will be called Iḍāpati, and the second, Piṅgalāpati; his elder son will bring peace upon the earth.
द्वितीयश्च नृणां राशेः सावर्णिर्भ्रमकारकः
The second, Sāvarṇi, will be the cause of confusion among men’s lineages.
जन्मराशिस्थिता देवी तपती ता पकारिणी
The goddess Tapatī, established in the sign of birth, will be the one who brings ripening.
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य सुरवैद्यौ बभूवतुः तेषां तु परिहारार्थौ दस्रौ चाश्विनिसंभवौ
Hearing these words, the two became the divine physicians; for their relief, the two Aśvins, born as the Dasras, appeared.
सूत उवाच स्वांशान्महीतले जातौ शूद्रयोन्यां रवेस्तुतौ
The Sūta said: Their own portions were born on earth, in the Śūdra caste, as praised by Ravi.
चाण्डालस्य गृहे जातश्छागहंतुरिडापतिः 3.4.18.
Born in the house of a caṇḍāla, the lord of goats, a killer of goats, appeared.
शालिग्रामशिलातुल्यं छागमांसं विचिक्रिये
He regarded goat meat as equal to the śāligrāma stone.
