दक्षिणस्यां दिशि च्छायां यः पश्येदात्मनः स्वयम्
Whoever sees his own shadow in the southern direction.
एवमेवैव यच्छिन्नं शिनष्टि च ततो हितम् 2.3.20.
In this way, whatever is cut off, he cuts off; thus, it is beneficial.
उच्चावचान्प्रवक्ष्यामि यथा शास्त्रेण चोदितम् मैथुनं दृश्यते यत्र तच्च राहोर्महाद्भुतम्
I will declare the high and low, as prescribed in scripture; where intercourse is seen, that is a great wonder of Rahu.
शनिमुद्दिश्य जुहुयादयुतं शनिवासरे
One should offer ten oblations for Saturn, on a Saturday.
कृत्वा तत्रैव पश्येत शनेरद्भुतदर्शनम् ।। अष्टाविंशं चरुं कृत्वा ततः शांतिर्भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Having performed it there, one should observe Saturn's wondrous appearance; after preparing the twenty-eighth oblation, peace will certainly result.
भुजपदोस्तथा चक्षुःस्पंदने मरणं दिशेत्
Movement in the arm, foot, or eye indicates death.
कृष्णपक्षे भवेद्वामे विपरीतेऽद्भुतं दिशेत्
In the dark fortnight, it occurs on the left; in the opposite case, it indicates a wonder.
शतार्द्धं रविमुद्दिश्य शान्त्यर्थे होममाचरेत्
For the purpose of peace, one should perform a fire offering for the Sun, using half a hundred.
पुस्तके यज्ञसूत्रं च असत्पात्रे चरौ तु वा
If the sacrificial thread or the ritual text is placed in an unworthy vessel or on the feet,
हयमारं त्रिमध्वक्तं जुहुयादिष्टसिद्धये
One should offer a horse, honey, and clarified butter to accomplish the desired result.
लोहितस्याद्भुतं विद्यात्सहस्रं च विशोधनम्
One should know that a thousand offerings of blood are extraordinary for purification.
द्रोणकाको बकश्चैव उलूकद्वयमेव च 2.3.20.
A crow, a crane, and two owls—these are to be noted.
यस्य देवगृहं पश्येत्तस्य तस्यायुतं हुनेत् संपत्तिसूचकं गेहे मरणं दुःखदर्शनम्
Whoever sees the house of a deity should offer ten thousand oblations for that; in the house, it indicates prosperity, but seeing death brings sorrow.
क्रंदने हतराज्येन गजाश्ववाहने क्वचित्
When there is wailing, loss of kingdom, or sometimes elephants and horses are yoked,
प्रमादात्कंपने हानिः स्वेदे जाते विपद्भवेत्
Due to negligence, trembling brings loss, and if sweating occurs, misfortune arises.
गोच्छागौ वाथ गोमायुर्गृहोपरि प्रनृत्यति
If a cow, a bull, or a jackal dances on the roof of the house,
श्वजंबुकावथ व्याघ्रो यथाशक्ति च धावति
If a dog, a jackal, or a tiger runs there with all its might,
राहोरद्भुतमुदिश्य सहस्रं जुहुयाच्चरुम् यद्गृहेषु हुतं याति देशविप्लवमादिशेत्
For an extraordinary omen of Rāhu, one should offer a thousand oblations; whatever is offered in the house indicates upheaval in the land.
देशे वा नगरे ग्रामे आरण्यपशुबन्धनम् तद्गृहे मरणं चैव देश विप्लवमादिशेत्
If in a country, city, or village, there is the binding of wild animals, then in that house there is death, and in that land, upheaval is indicated.
दिवाद्भुतेऽयुतं रात्रौ द्विगुणं च भवेद्ध्रुवम्
For an extraordinary event during the day, ten thousand; at night, certainly twice as much.
अकाले तत्र मरणमकाले गृहिणीमृतिः
If death occurs at an improper time, or if the householder's wife dies at an improper time,
एकैकस्यायुतं यत्र कुर्यात्तत्रैव होमयेत् 2.3.20.
Wherever ten thousand are to be performed for each, there itself one should offer the oblation.
अधिप्रत्यधिसहितं गृहपक्षेऽपि सत्तमाः
Even in the case of the house's lord and sub-lord, O best ones, in the house's favor,
एकैकस्याहुतं विप्रा अष्टावष्टौ हुतं च वा
O Brahmins, for each one, a single oblation, or eight or eight oblations may be offered.
मानांतं च ददेत्पूर्णां दत्त्वा पूर्णां न होमयेत्
One should give the full measure as prescribed, but after giving the full measure, one should not offer it into the fire.
अमानकरणे दोषस्तस्मान्मानं न हापयेत्
If the measure is not made, there is fault; therefore, one should not diminish the measure.
अनिष्टाय ततो दद्याच्चरुहोमं विभागशः
For averting misfortune, one should then offer the Caru oblation in divided portions.
त्र्यंबकादिषु मंत्रेषु होमत्रयमुदाहृतम्
In the mantras beginning with Tryambaka, three homa offerings are prescribed.
आदित्यायाष्टावष्टावधिककल्पयेत्सुधीः
A wise person should arrange eight or multiples of eight offerings for Aditya.
अनिष्टाय युगांगं तु ग्रहेभ्यो ह्यंगनाय च
For averting misfortune, the yugānga portion is to be offered for the planets and for the removal of their defects.
