केसरी शर्करा तैलं राजतं तांडवं स्थितम्
Saffron, sugar, oil, silver, and a fixed drum,
ताम्रं कांस्यं तथा लोहं सीसकं पित्तलं तथा
copper, bell-metal, iron, lead, and brass as well—
धननाशो भवेत्तस्य स्वर्ग भंगो ह्यथापि वा गजाश्वपशुभृत्यानां विनाशो जायते ध्रुवम् ।। 2.3.20.
the loss of wealth will occur for him, or the fall from heaven, or certainly the destruction of elephants, horses, cattle, and servants.
यस्यैतानि प्रदृश्यंते पर्वतः कनकानि च
For whom these are seen, or mountains of gold,
दंतोत्तरेषु दंताश्च पंक्तिमाक्रम्य संस्थिताः उपदंताश्च सर्वे ते न ते दोषकराः क्वचित्
if teeth are seen in the upper jaw, arranged in a row, and all are secondary teeth, these never cause any harm.
भांडे कुंभे यदा चैव श्रूयते घनगर्जितम्
When the sound of thunder is heard in a vessel or a pot,
मूषिकानां मुखे चैव ज्वलंती यस्य पश्यति
or if one sees fire blazing in the mouth of mice,
शांतिं तत्र प्रवक्ष्यामि यया संपद्यते शुभम् दधिमधुघृताक्तं च जुहुयाद्भार्गवे दिने
I will tell the remedy by which good fortune arises there: one should offer oblations of curd, honey, and ghee on a day sacred to Bhṛgu.
शुक्लवासोयुगं चैव गां च शुक्लां पयस्विनीम्
Also, a pair of white garments and a white, milk-giving cow.
देवागारे यदा भूमिर्लोहिता यस्य दृश्यते
When the earth appears red in the temple of the gods,
राजा वा राजपुत्रो वा राज्यं वापि विनश्यति
the king, or the prince, or the kingdom itself will perish.
यत्र वा दृश्यते लोके गृहे यस्य सुपूजिताः
Wherever in the world, or in whose house, these are seen and are well-honored,
हस्त्यश्वमहिषाश्चैव अजा गावस्तथैव च 2.3.20.
elephants, horses, buffaloes, goats, and cows likewise,
गृहे हंसो गृहे सम्यङ्मण्डूका जलचारिणः
if there is a swan in the house, or properly aquatic creatures like frogs,
अकस्माद्धटशब्दोपि यत्र कुत्रापि जायते
Wherever a sudden sound like thunder arises unexpectedly,
गृही तत्र विनश्येत सपुत्रपशुबांधवः
There, the householder perishes, along with his sons, cattle, and relatives.
उदितो दृश्यते व्योम्नि ज्वलितः पावकस्तथा
A blazing fire is seen rising in the sky,
रससिद्धानि वस्तूनि सुराद्याश्चापि वा पुनः विनश्यंति सदा चैते शनेरद्भुतदर्शने
Substances perfected by alchemy, and also liquors and the like, are always destroyed gradually when such wonders are seen.
नगरे वा तथा ग्रामे जायन्ते तस्य वैरिणः
In the city or in the village, his enemies arise.
मृगव्याघ्रादिरक्षांसि तथा गोमहिषा अपि
Beasts such as deer, tigers, and demons, as well as cows and buffaloes, too.
निधिमंत्रं प्रवक्ष्यामि येन संपद्यते शुभम्
I will declare the mantra for hidden treasure, by which good fortune is attained.
शन्नो देवीति मंत्रेण शुभार्थं शनिवासरे
With the mantra 'śanno devī' for auspiciousness, on a Saturday,
गां च नीलां ततो दद्याज्जीवद्वत्सां पयस्विनीम् 2.3.20.
One should give a blue cow, living, with a calf, and yielding milk.
दत्त्वा तु श्रद्धया सम्यग्दक्षिणां शिरसि स्थिताम्
Having given, with proper faith, a fitting gift placed upon the head,
यदा द्वारे गोधिका च शंखिनी प्रविशेद्गृहम् अयुतं जुहुयात्सम्यक्ततः संपद्यते शुभम्
When a lizard or a conch-bearing creature enters the house at the door, one should properly offer ten thousand oblations; then auspiciousness is attained.
विना गर्जितमेघेन शिलावृष्टिः प्रजायते
Without the roar of clouds, a hailstorm occurs.
तत्र संदृश्यते चाभ्रं वृक्षा वातविवर्जिताः
There, a cloud is seen, and trees are devoid of wind.
दिवा शिवा पुरा रौति उलूको वा निशाचरः
During the day, the jackal howls, or the owl, a creature of the night.
अधर्मप्रबला देशा राजा धर्मपराङ्मुखः
The lands are dominated by unrighteousness, and the king turns away from righteousness.
गृहे गृही विनश्येच्च सपुत्रपशुबांधवः
In the house, the householder perishes, along with his sons, cattle, and relatives.
