उपरिष्टाद्भवेद्यस्य महोत्पातो भवेदयम्
If such a great portent arises above, this will be a great calamity.
रुदितं कोकिलस्यापि उलूकोप्यशुभं वदेत् हस्तिनो मदयुक्ताश्च म्रियंते नात्र संशयः
Even the weeping of a cuckoo, or the cry of an owl, is considered inauspicious; and elephants filled with must die—of this there is no doubt.
ताडीपूगादयो यत्र यमौ स्यातां प्रमादतः
Wherever toddy palms and areca palms are struck down suddenly, there Yama is present due to heedlessness.
बद्धपुष्पे यदा पुष्पं फलं वा यदि दृश्यते दधि मधु घृतं चैव जुहुयादयुतं द्विजाः ।।2.3.20.
If a flower or fruit is seen on a plant whose flowers are already tied, the twice-born should offer curd, honey, and ghee together as an oblation.
पालाशं सोममुद्दिश्य सोमस्य च भवेद्दिने
On the day dedicated to Soma, one should offer the palāśa tree to Soma.
उत्पतंति गृहे यस्य यवा माषाश्च पुष्कलाः
If barley and black gram sprout abundantly in someone's house, it is a portent.
अकस्माद्गृहदाहस्तु अनग्निज्वलनं यथा
If a house catches fire suddenly, as if without any visible flame,
व्याधिलीना विनश्यंति निखिलाः पशुमानुषाः ३४ राजामात्यविनाशाय गेहे गेही विनश्यति
All animals and humans afflicted with disease perish; for the destruction of the king and his ministers, the householder perishes in his house.
दृष्ट्वा वाभद्रमत्युग्रं जुहुयादयुतं क्रमात्
Having seen a very terrible inauspicious sign, one should offer oblations in due order.
अग्निर्मूद्धेंति मंत्रेण श्रपितं लोहितं चरुम् स्वर्णमंगारमुद्दिश्य ततः शांतिः प्रजायते
With a mantra, fire is kindled; an oblation of clarified butter mixed with blood is offered, designating gold or charcoal—thereby peace is attained.
पुष्पं वा पातयेद्यत्र फलं वापि तथैव च
Where a flower or fruit falls, just so,
हस्त्यश्वमहिषा गावो दारापत्यधनानि च आंगारकेण मंत्रेण खादिरं चाक्षतैर्युतम्
Elephants, horses, buffaloes, cows, wives, children, and wealth—using the mantra for charcoal, with khadira wood and unbroken rice grains,
दक्षिणां च यथाशक्ति दद्याद्विप्राय वा पुनः 2.3.20.
One should give a suitable gift to a Brahmin according to one's ability.
धावंति चोर्ध्वपुच्छाश्च गृहे गावः स्वयं यदि
If cows in the house run with their tails raised on their own,
गृहे यस्य भवंत्येते तस्य भार्या विनश्यति
In whose house these occur, his wife perishes.
मिथ्यावादेन गेही च राज्ञा वादैश्च तिष्ठति
Because of false testimony, the householder remains in dispute with the king.
धरणीहननं यत्र द्वयोरास्कदनं तथा
Where there is a breaking of the earth, or the splitting of two,
यस्य गेहे भवंत्येते नाशस्तस्य भवेद्ध्रुवम्
In whose house these occur, destruction is certain for him.
अकस्माद्यदि चैतानि बुधस्योत्पातलक्षणम्
If these signs of calamity appear suddenly in connection with Mercury,
दधिमधुघृताक्तं च अपामार्गं तथा पुनः
One should offer apāmārga, coated with curd, honey, and ghee, again.
अंबकेति च मंत्रेण बुधाय श्रपयेच्चरुम्
With the mantra 'ambaka', one should offer a cooked oblation to Mercury.
सुवर्णं पुष्पवृष्टिं च सुफलं चाक्षतं तथा
Gold, a shower of flowers, good fruits, and unbroken grains as well,
अलंकारयुतां वापि सर्वाभरणभूषिताम् 2.3.20.
Or adorned with ornaments, or decorated with all kinds of jewelry.
अकस्मान्मालतीपुष्पं जातं स्यात्तस्य वा गृहे
If jasmine flowers appear suddenly, either in his house,
धनं धान्यं तथा पुत्र ऐश्वर्यं च वरस्त्रियः
Wealth, grain, sons, prosperity, and excellent women,
श्रीश्चतेति च मन्त्रेण अपामार्गं तथा बुधः
With the mantra 'śrīśca', Mercury should be offered apāmārga.
पयस्विनीं तथा गां च वासोयुगसमन्वितम्
And a cow that gives milk, along with a pair of garments.
रक्तस्रावो भवेद्यत्र तत्र ऋत्विक्प्रसूयते
Where there is a flow of blood, there the officiating priest is born.
एको वृषस्त्रयो गावः सप्ताष्ट नव दंतिनः
One bull, three cows, seven, eight, or nine tusked animals.
पुनःपुनर्व्रतं चाशु अकाले मैथुनं तथा
Repeated observance of vows, and intercourse at improper times.
