ऊषुस्तत्र व्रताचारे माधवे कृष्णवल्लभे
There, they observed vows and practices for Mādhava, beloved of Kṛṣṇa.
ऋतुकालोद्भवैः पुष्पैर्धूपैर्दीपैर्विधानतः
With flowers, incense, and lamps appropriate to the season, according to the prescribed rites.
कंदमूलफलाहारा जीवहिंसाविवर्जिताः
They subsisted on roots, tubers, and fruits, avoiding harm to living beings.
ददौ तेभ्यो वरं रम्यं तच्छृणुध्वं समाहिताः
She granted them a beautiful boon—listen to this attentively.
कालज्ञत्वं च देवाय ब्रह्मज्ञत्वं नृपाय च
She gave knowledge of time to the god, and knowledge of Brahman to the king.
कृतकृत्यास्तदा ते वै स्वगेहं पुनराययुः
Having accomplished their purpose, they then returned to their own homes.
श्यामांगं सात्यकेरंशं सुषुवे शुभलक्षणम्
She gave birth to a dark-complexioned son, a portion of Sātyaki, bearing auspicious marks.
आषाढे मासि संप्राप्ते कृष्णांशो हयवाहनः
When the month of Āṣāḍha arrived, the portion of Kṛṣṇa, the horse-borne one, was born.
दृष्ट्वा स नगरीं रम्यां चतुर्वर्णनिषेविताम् 3.3.11.
Seeing the beautiful city, attended by the four social orders.
दत्त्वा स्वर्णं द्विजातिभ्यः संतर्प्य द्विजदेवताः
He gave gold to the twice-born, satisfying the Brahmins and the gods.
नत्वा स मातुलं धीमांस्तथान्याँश्च सभासदः
He bowed to his wise maternal uncle and to the other members of the assembly.
तदा नृपाज्ञया शूरा बंधनाय समुद्यताः
Then, by the king's command, the warriors prepared for imprisonment.
मोहितं तं नृपं कृत्वा दुष्टबुद्धिर्महीपतिः
Having deluded that king, the wicked-minded ruler acted.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वीरो बोधितो देवमायया
Meanwhile, the hero was awakened by the divine power of Māyā.
हत्वा पंचशतं शूरो हयारूढो महाबली ।। उर्वीयां नगरीं प्राप्य जलपाने मनो दधौ
The heroic and mighty warrior, mounted on a horse, having slain five hundred, reached the city on earth and set his mind on drinking water.
कूपे दृष्ट्वा शुभा नार्यो घटपूर्तिकरीस्तदा
There, at the well, he saw noble women engaged in filling their water pots.
दृष्ट्वा ताः सुंदरं रूपं मोहनायोपचक्रिरे
Seeing their beautiful forms, they began to act in a way to enchant him.
वनं गत्वा रिपुं जित्वा बद्ध्वा तमुभयं बली
Going to the forest, conquering his enemy, the mighty one bound both of them.
श्रुत्वा स करुणं वाक्यं त्यक्त्वा स्वनगरं ययौ 3.3.11.
Hearing those sorrowful words, he abandoned his own city and departed.
श्रुत्वा परिमलो राजा द्विजातिभ्यो ददौ धनम्
Hearing this, King Parimala gave wealth to the twice-born.
संप्राप्तैकादशदाब्दे तु कृष्णांशे युद्धदुर्मदे
When the eleventh year had arrived, in the dark half, during a time of war-madness,
बलिं यथोचितं दत्त्वा भगिन्यै भयकातरः
He gave the proper tribute to his sister, being fearful.
अगमा भगिनी तस्य दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरमातुरम्
His sister came, having seen her brother in distress.
अद्याहं स्वबलैः सार्द्धं गत्वा तत्र महावतीम्
Today, together with my own forces, I will go there to the great city.
इत्युक्त्वा धुंधुकारं च समाहूय महाबलम्
Having said this, he summoned Dhundhukara, the mighty one.
केचिच्छूरा हयारूढा उष्ट्रारूढा महाबलाः
Some heroes, mounted on horses and camels, were exceedingly strong.
देवसिंहस्तु कालज्ञः श्रुत्वा चागमनं रिपोः
But Devasimha, who knew the proper time, heard of the enemy's approach.
श्रुत्वा परिमलो राजा विह्वलोऽभूद्भयातुरः
Hearing this, King Parimala became agitated and filled with fear.
अद्याहं च महीराजं धुंधुकारं ससैन्यकम् 3.3.11.
Today I, along with Dhundhukara and his army, will face the great king.
इत्युक्त्वा तं नमस्कृत्य सेनापतिरभून्मुने
Having said this and bowed to him, he became the commander of the army, O sage.
