ब्रह्माणं नागराजानं द्वारपालौ च पश्चिमे
To the Brahmin, the king of serpents, and the two doorkeepers in the west.
बलिदानं विधानेन कृत्वा दद्याद्यथाविधि 2.3.2.
Having made the offering of bali according to the procedure, he should give as prescribed.
वज्री च धूमली कृष्णा पीता चैवाथ वारुणी
Vajrī, Dhūmalī, Kṛṣṇā, Pītā, and also Vāruṇī.
कुंभेषु पूजयेद्देवान्महेशं प्रथमं बुधः
He should worship the gods in the water pots, first Maheśa, the wise one.
वेदिकापूर्वभागे तु उत्तरे कलशे शिवम्
On the northern pot, at the eastern part of the altar, he should worship Śiva.
कलशे विधिवद्भक्त्या उपचारैः पृथग्विधैः
In the pot, with proper devotion and various offerings, according to the rules.
यो नागास्तान्प्रवक्ष्यामि अनंतो वासुकिस्तथा पद्मश्चैव महापद्मो मन्त्रैरेभिः पृथक्पृथक्
I shall declare those serpents: Ananta, Vāsuki, Padma, and Mahāpadma, each with these mantras separately.
पुंडरीकदलाभास शुभकर्णांतलोचन
Resembling the petal of a lotus, with auspicious ears and eyes at the base.
अनंत नागराजेन्द्र इहागच्छ नमोऽस्तु ते
O Ananta, king of serpents, come here; salutations to you.
सर्वनागस्य शूरस्य कृतस्वस्तिकलांछन
To the heroic lord of all serpents, marked with the auspicious svastika.
नवीनजलदश्याम श्रीमन्कमललोचन
Dark as a fresh raincloud, glorious, with lotus-like eyes.
शंखपाल इति ख्यात जलाधारप्रतीक्षक 2.3.2.
Known as Śaṃkhapāla, awaiting the bearer of water.
अतिपीत सुवर्णाभ चन्द्रार्धांकितमस्तक
Very yellow, golden in appearance, with a head marked by a crescent moon.
कुलीर नागराजेंद्र सर्वसत्त्वहिते रत
O Kulīra, king of serpents, devoted to the welfare of all beings.
यः सुवर्णेन वर्णेन पद्मपत्रायतेक्षणः तस्मै ते पद्मनागेन्द्र तीव्ररूप नमोऽस्तु ते
To him whose color is golden, whose eyes are long like lotus petals—O you, king of serpents, fierce in form, I bow to you.
नागिन्यो नागकन्याश्च तथा नागकुमारकाः
The serpent-women, the daughters of serpents, and likewise the young serpent boys—
स्वगृह्योक्तेन विधिना कृत्वाग्निस्थापनं बुधः
The wise one, following the procedure prescribed for his own house, should establish the fire.
आदित्यादिग्रहांश्चैव ब्रह्माणं कृष्णमेव च
He should also invoke the Adityas and other planets, as well as Brahma and Krishna.
प्रादेशमात्रं संप्रोक्ष्य यूपं चास्य प्रमाणकम्
He should sprinkle the sacrificial post, measuring a span, and ensure its proper dimensions.
कूपे निक्षिप्य तान्नागान्पञ्चरत्नं क्षिपेत्ततः
Placing those serpents in a well, he should then deposit five kinds of gems.
रञ्जितः कदलीवृक्षं वरुणाय समुत्सृजेत् कर्णवेधं ततः कृत्वा उत्सृजेद्वाक्यमुच्चरन्
He should offer a plantain tree, colored, to Varuna; then, after performing ear-piercing, he should utter the prescribed words and release it.
ॐ अद्येत्यादि सर्वभूतेभ्यः फलपुष्पपत्रच्छायावृतमुख्यनानातरुविरचितमारामं वनस्पतिदेवतं सुपूजितं वेदव्यासाद्युक्तफलावाप्तये अमुकऋषिसगोत्रः अमुकदेव शर्माहमुत्सृजे वृक्षाग्रात्पतितस्यापि आरोहात्पतितस्य वा ।। 2.3.2.
Reciting: 'Om, today, for all beings, for the attainment of the fruits spoken by Vyasa and others, I, so-and-so, of such-and-such sage lineage, named so-and-so Sharma, release this tree deity of the grove, honored with fruits, flowers, leaves, and shade, made of various trees, even if it has fallen from the top or from climbing.'
मरणे चास्थिभंगे वा कर्ता पापैर्न लिप्यते
In the case of death or bone fracture, the performer is not tainted by sin.
तद्दोशमनार्थाय तस्याप्येतत्प्रतिष्ठितम्
This is established for the removal of that fault and misfortune.
मधुलाजाक्षतं दद्यादञ्जनं माल्यमेव च
He should offer honey, fried grains, unbroken rice, collyrium, and also a garland.
वेष्टयेत्क्षीरधारां च पातयेद्घृतधारया
He should wrap it with a stream of milk and pour a stream of ghee over it.
क्षुद्रारामप्रतिष्ठावर्णनम् अमंडले शुभे स्थाने द्विहस्तेऽप्यथ स्थंडिले
Description of an improper or small grove: In a place that is not a proper circle, or even on a flat spot measuring two cubits—
स्थापयेत्कलशं तत्र विष्णुं सोमं समर्चयेत्
He should place a water pot there and worship Vishnu and Soma.
वृक्षान्माल्यैरलंकृत्य भूषयेद्भूषणादिना
He should decorate the trees with garlands and adorn them with ornaments and the like.
भोजयेत्पञ्चविप्रान्हि पुरतस्तं विशेषयेत्
He should feed five Brahmins and especially honor them in front.
