तथेत्युक्त्वा रविः साक्षाद्ददौ तस्मै पपिहकम्
Having said, 'So be it,' the Sun himself gave him a papihaka bird.
अतः पपीहको नाम लोकपालनकर्मवान्
Therefore, the one named Papihaka became the agent of protecting the worlds.
बुभुजे स्मरवेगेन तस्यां जातास्तुरंगमाः
Overcome by the force of desire, he enjoyed her, and from her were born horses.
तदा जातौ हरिण्याश्च मेघपुष्पबलाहकौ
Then, from the doe were born Megha, Pushpa, and Balāhaka.
दिव्यांगास्ते हि चत्वारः पूर्वं जाता महाबलाः
Those four, with divine forms, were previously born as mighty beings.
इति ते कथितं विप्र शृणु तत्र कथां शुभाम्
Thus it has been told to you, O sage; listen now to the auspicious story there.
देवसिंहाय बलिने ददौ चाश्वं मनोरथम् 3.3.10.
To Devasiṃha, the strong one, he gave a horse as his heart's desire.
ब्रह्मानंदाय पुत्राय प्रददौ हरिनागरम्
To his son Brahmananda, he gave the city of deer.
हरिणीं वडवां शुभ्रां बलखानिः समारुहत्
Balakhani mounted the beautiful white mare.
आह्लादेनैव शार्दूलो हतः प्राणिभयंकरः
With joy, the tiger—terrifying to living beings—was slain.
ब्रह्मानंदेन हरिणो हतस्तत्र महावने
By Brahmananda, the deer was slain there in the great forest.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवी शारदा च शुभानना
Meanwhile, the goddess Sharada, with a beautiful face—
दृष्ट्वा तां मोहिताः सर्वे स्वैः स्वैर्बाणैरताडयन्
Seeing her, all were enchanted and struck her with their own arrows.
आह्लादाद्याश्च ते शूरा विस्मिताश्च बभूविरे
And those heroes, beginning with Ahlada, were astonished.
तदा च पीडिता देवी भयभीता ययौ वनम्
Then the goddess, afflicted and fearful, went into the forest.
वनांतरं च संप्राप्य देवी धृत्वा स्वकं वपुः
Having entered the interior of the forest, the goddess assumed her own form.
यदा ते च भयं भूयात्तदा त्वं मां सदा स्मर 3.3.10.
Whenever you are overcome by fear, remember me always.
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हिता देवी शारदा सर्वमंगला
Having spoken thus, the goddess Śāradā, auspicious in all ways, disappeared.
तदा पराक्रमं तेषां दृष्ट्वा राजा सुखोऽभवत्
Then, seeing their valor, the king became joyful.
वसंतसमये रम्ये ययुस्ते प्रमदावनम्
In the delightful season of spring, they went to the pleasure garden.
ऊषुस्तत्र व्रताचारे माधवे कृष्णवल्लभे
There, they observed vows and practices for Mādhava, beloved of Kṛṣṇa.
ऋतुकालोद्भवैः पुष्पैर्धूपैर्दीपैर्विधानतः
With flowers, incense, and lamps appropriate to the season, according to the prescribed rites.
कंदमूलफलाहारा जीवहिंसाविवर्जिताः
They subsisted on roots, tubers, and fruits, avoiding harm to living beings.
ददौ तेभ्यो वरं रम्यं तच्छृणुध्वं समाहिताः
She granted them a beautiful boon—listen to this attentively.
कालज्ञत्वं च देवाय ब्रह्मज्ञत्वं नृपाय च
She gave knowledge of time to the god, and knowledge of Brahman to the king.
कृतकृत्यास्तदा ते वै स्वगेहं पुनराययुः
Having accomplished their purpose, they then returned to their own homes.
श्यामांगं सात्यकेरंशं सुषुवे शुभलक्षणम्
She gave birth to a dark-complexioned son, a portion of Sātyaki, bearing auspicious marks.
आषाढे मासि संप्राप्ते कृष्णांशो हयवाहनः
When the month of Āṣāḍha arrived, the portion of Kṛṣṇa, the horse-borne one, was born.
दृष्ट्वा स नगरीं रम्यां चतुर्वर्णनिषेविताम् 3.3.11.
Seeing the beautiful city, attended by the four social orders.
दत्त्वा स्वर्णं द्विजातिभ्यः संतर्प्य द्विजदेवताः
He gave gold to the twice-born, satisfying the Brahmins and the gods.
