ततो वरुणसूक्तेन वरुणं नागसंयुतम्
Then, with the Varuna hymn, one should worship Varuna accompanied by serpents—
पूजयेद्वरुणं देवमर्घ्यं दद्याद्विशेषतः
One should worship the god Varuna and especially offer arghya—
श्वेताश्वसुरसंभूतं श्रीश्च तेति च संजपन्
Reciting 'born from the white horse' and 'Shri', one should continue—
तद्विष्णोरिति मंत्रेण कुशमूलेन स्थापयेत्
With the mantra 'tad vishnoh', one should establish with the root of kusa grass—
गायत्र्या स्नापयेद्देवं रत्नतोयेन साधकः
With the Gayatri, the practitioner should bathe the deity with jewel-water—
दधिक्राव्णेति दध्ना च मधुवातेति वै मधु
Reciting 'dadhikrāvan', with curd, and 'madhuvāt', indeed with honey—
( वरुणोत्तमिति मंत्रस्य नारायण ऋषिः गायत्री छंदो वरुणो देवता वरुणप्रीतये विनियोगः आप्यायस्वेति मंत्रस्य पर्वत ऋषिः उष्णिक्छन्दः सरस्वती देवता वरुणप्रीतये चतुष्पथमृदा स्नाने विनियोगः कया न इति मंत्रस्य वसिष्ठ ऋषिरनुष्टुप्छन्दः सोमो देवता वरुणप्रीतये नागगंधस्नाने विनियोगः सरस्वत्यै भैषज्येनेति मंत्रस्य वामदेव ऋषिः पंक्तिश्छंदो विष्णुर्देवता वरुणप्रीतये विनियोगः अग्न आयाहीति मंत्रस्य जनार्दन ऋषिः जगतीछन्द ऐन्द्री देवता वरुणप्रीतये विनियोगः पश्चान्नीराजनं कुर्यात्पञ्चघोषपुरःसरम् ।। 2.2.19.
(For the mantra 'varuṇottama', the seer is Nārāyaṇa, the meter is Gāyatrī, the deity is Varuṇa, and the application is for pleasing Varuṇa. For the mantra 'āpyāyasva', the seer is Parvata, the meter is Ushnik, the deity is Sarasvatī, and the application is for pleasing Varuṇa in the bath with earth from the crossroads. For the mantra 'kayā na', the seer is Vasiṣṭha, the meter is Anuṣṭup, the deity is Soma, and the application is for pleasing Varuṇa in the bath with serpent fragrance. For the mantra 'sarasvatyai bhaiṣajyeneti', the seer is Vāmadeva, the meter is Paṅkti, the deity is Viṣṇu, and the application is for pleasing Varuṇa. For the mantra 'agna āyāhi', the seer is Janārdana, the meter is Jagatī, the deity is Aindrī, and the application is for pleasing Varuṇa. Afterwards, one should perform nīrājana with the accompaniment of five sounds.)
शिरीषपुष्पसंभूतं दर्पणं कास्यसंभवम् कृष्णां गां गोमयं वापि स्वस्तिकं शंखमेव च
A mirror made from shirisha flowers, one made of bronze, a black cow, or even cow dung, a swastika, and a conch—
कारयेत्पदकं वापि यवगोधूमकस्य वा श्रीरसं पुष्पसंभूतं दर्पणं कांस्यसंभवम्
One should prepare a seat, or else one made of barley or wheat flour; a vessel for auspicious liquid, flowers, a mirror made of bronze.
नन्द्यावर्ते मलयजे ततो निर्मलयेत्सुधीः
With nandyāvarta and sandalwood, then the wise should purify.
ध्रुवप्रतिकृतैर्मंत्रैरष्टभिश्च यथाक्रमम्
With eight mantras modeled after Dhruva, in proper sequence.
ततो नारायणसूक्तेन देवं नारायणं व्रजेत्
Then, with the Nārāyaṇa Sūkta, one should approach the deity Nārāyaṇa.
तत आचमनीयं च वस्त्रयुग्मं निवेदयेत्
Then offer water for sipping and a pair of garments.
पृथक्पृथक्ततो दद्यात्तावंत्येनापि भो द्विजाः सर्ववर्णप्रदे देव वाससी ते विनिर्मिते
Then, separately, one should give as much as possible, O twice-born; O Lord, you grant garments to all classes, these garments are fashioned for you.
शरीरं ते न जानामि चेष्टां नैव च नैव च
I do not know your body, nor your actions, nor anything at all.
अष्टोत्तरशतान्दीपान्परितः स्थापयेत्क्रमात्
One should place one hundred and eight lamps all around, in order.
त्वं सूर्य्यचन्द्रज्योतींषि विषादस्त्वं तथैव च 2.2.19.
You are the light of the sun and moon, you are also the remover of poison.
प्रदक्षिणं ततः कुर्यात्पञ्चधा सप्तधाथ वा
Then one should perform circumambulation five times, or seven times.
वनस्पतिरसो दिव्यो गंधाढ्यः सुरभिः शुचिः
The essence of trees is divine, fragrant, pleasing, and pure.
अलंकारैश्च गंधैश्च पीतवस्त्रैस्तथैव च दद्यात्पञ्चाञ्जलिं पश्चाद्विष्णुसूक्तं पुनर्जपेत्
With ornaments, fragrances, and yellow garments likewise, one should offer five handfuls, then again recite the Viṣṇu Sūkta.
ततः सुशोभने स्थाने वेदीं निर्माय देशिकः
Then, in a beautiful place, the teacher should construct an altar.
विवाहोक्तेन विधिना कुर्यान्निर्मंछनादिकम्
According to the procedure prescribed for marriage, one should perform purification and related rites.
चामरं व्यजनं छत्रं कांस्यं लोहं तथैव च
A fly-whisk, fan, umbrella, bronze, and iron likewise.
चतुष्कोणां च सुषमां द्व्यंगुष्ठपरिमंडलाम्
A square, well-proportioned, with a circumference of two thumb-lengths.
अथ वा स्वर्णपत्रे च कुंकुमेन तले लिखेत्
Or else, on a golden plate, one should inscribe with saffron on the surface.
कारयेच्चतुरस्रं च पीठोपरि न्यसेद्बुधः
One should make a square and place it upon the seat, O wise one.
अशक्तेन तथैवैककाष्ठे वा पिप्पलच्छदे 2.2.19.
If one is unable, then likewise, use a single piece of wood or a leaf of the pipal tree.
प्राणप्रतिष्ठां कुर्यात्तु वरुणाय निवेदयेत्
He should perform the invocation of life and then offer it to Varuna.
अशोकः खदिरः शालो ह्यश्वत्थो बिल्वकस्तथा
Ashoka, khadira, shala, asvattha, and bilva trees as well.
एषामेव काष्ठयूपं यजमानप्रमाणकम्
From these alone, the sacrificial post should be made, matching the measure of the sacrificer.
