वैराजं पौरुषं सूक्तं सौवर्णं रुद्रसंहिताम्
The Vairāja, Pauruṣa hymn, the Sauvarṇa, and the Rudrasaṃhitā.
वामदेव्यं बृहत्साम तथा चैव रथंतरम्
The Vāmadevya, the Bṛhatsāman, and likewise the Rathaṃtara.
गायंतं ब्राह्मणा ये च पूर्वादिद्वारदेशतः
The Brāhmaṇas who sing, as well as those from the eastern and other gates.
रुद्राध्यायं च पञ्चांगं रौद्र इत्यभिधीयते
The Rudra chapter with five limbs is called the Raudra.
ईशावेत्यादि स्वांगं च कौष्मांडं दशमं स्मृतम्
Beginning with 'Īśā', its own limb, and the Kauṣmāṇḍa is remembered as the tenth.
षोडशं तु विभ्राड् वृहत्सौरं सूक्तं प्रकीर्तितम्
The sixteenth is the brilliant Bṛhatsaura hymn, so it is proclaimed.
रात्रिसूक्तं हि यज्वाग्ने रक्षोघ्नं शैवसूक्तकम्
The Night Hymn, indeed, is for the sacrificer Agni, destructive of demons, and is a Śaiva hymn.
पवमानं तु तद्विद्धि पावमानं तु षोडश तदर्द्धार्द्धं च आरामे कूपे त्वेकऋचं जपेत् ।। 2.2.19.
Know the Pavamāna as such; the Pavamāna is the sixteenth. Half of that, or a single verse, should be recited in a garden or at a well.
स्वगृह्योक्तविधानेन प्रतिकुण्डेषु होमयेत्
According to the procedure stated in one's own Gṛhya-sūtra, one should offer oblations in each fire-pit.
प्रज्वाल्याग्निं च विधिवद्धोमं कुर्यादनन्तरम्
Having properly kindled the fire, one should then perform the homa according to the rules.
यस्य देवस्य यो यागः प्रतिष्ठा यस्य कस्यचित्
For whichever deity the sacrifice is intended, and for whatever establishment, for anyone.
तिलाज्यैः पायसैर्वाथ पत्रपुष्पाक्षतेन च
With sesame and clarified butter, or with milk-rice, or with leaves, flowers, and colored rice grains.
मरुद्भ्यो लोकपालेभ्यो विधिवद्विश्वकर्मणे
To the Maruts, to the guardians of the worlds, and properly to Viśvakarman.
इन्द्रेश्वरमारुतानां तिलाज्येन घृतेन वा
To Indra, Īśvara, and the Maruts, with sesame and clarified butter, or with ghee.
दिगीशानां च प्रत्येकमष्टाष्टौ च विशेषतः
For each of the guardians of the directions, there are especially eight offerings apiece.
समित्त्रयं पलाशस्य अथवाश्वत्थसंभवम्
Three bundles of palāśa wood, or those originating from the aśvattha tree, are to be used.
शिवं प्रजा पतिं विष्णुं दुर्गां च कमलामपि
Śiva, Prajāpati, Viṣṇu, Durgā, and also Kamalā (Lakṣmī) are to be invoked.
भूतेभ्योऽप्याहुतिं दद्यादेवं मासद्वयं क्रमात् 2.2.19.
Offer oblations to the spirits as well, in this manner, for two months in succession.
विष्णुं चैव तु वायव्ये दुर्गायाश्च तथोत्तरे
Viṣṇu is to be worshipped in the northwest, and Durgā likewise in the north.
एककुण्डे तु एकस्मिन्होमं कुर्याद्यथाविधि
In a single fire-pit, one should perform the homa according to the prescribed method.
पश्चिमे यस्य यागस्य दुर्गायाश्चोत्तरे दिशि !
In the west of the altar, for Durgā, and in the north direction as well.
विष्ण्वादिदेवतानां च अग्रकुंडे विधीयते द्वितीये पूजनं कुर्याद्धोमं कुर्याद्यथाविधि
For Viṣṇu and the other deities, the main fire-pit is prescribed; in the second, one should perform worship and homa according to the proper method.
बलिदानं तृतीये तु चतुर्थीकं चतुर्थके त्र्यहसाध्ये तृतीये तु नवाहे त्वथ पंचमे
In the third, the offering of bali is to be made; in the fourth, the caturthikā rite; for a three-day rite, in the third; for a nine-day rite, in the fifth.
उदङ्मुखः प्राङ्मुखो वाप्यैशान्यादि क्रमेण तु मन्त्रपूर्वं साग्निकानां निरग्नेस्तुष्टिकेन तु
Facing north or east, or in order beginning from the northeast, with mantras for those with fire, and with satisfaction offerings for those without fire.
त्रिकुशेन महायागे विवाहादौ द्विपत्रकम्
With three kuśa blades in a great sacrifice, and with two blades at weddings and similar rites.
दिग्विदिक्षु परिस्तीर्य महायागेषु सर्वदा
One should always scatter (kuśa) in all directions during great sacrifices.
अकृत्वा कर्म नित्यं च वृथा नैमित्तिकं भवेत् 2.2.19.
If the regular rite is not performed, the occasional rite becomes fruitless.
प्रायश्चित्ते वैश्वदेवे सायंप्रातः प्रतीषु च
In expiatory rites, Vaiśvadeva, evening and morning offerings, and in all directions.
मारणोच्चाटहोमेषु तथा संकल्पिताकृती १ प्रत्यवायकुले क्वापि तत्र नित्याकृतिं विना
In rites for destruction, expulsion, and homas, as well as those with a specific intention, if there is an obstacle in the family, there, without the regular form—
शतार्द्धं जुहुयाद्यत्र तत्र नित्यं विवर्जयेत्
Where one should offer a hundred and a half (oblations), there, the regular (rite) should be omitted.
