जपाकुसुमसंकाशा बहुरूपा सखे मम
Resembling the color of hibiscus flowers, manifold in form, O friend of mine.
नीलोत्पलनिभे देवि वह्निवर्णपराभवे
O goddess, dark as a blue lotus, surpassing the color of fire.
देवध्यानविधानवर्णनम् धान्यप्रतिष्ठां तस्यैव यूपं चापि यथाविधि
The establishment of grain and the sacrificial post should be performed according to prescribed rules.
रात्रौ मूलाग्रे च घटे स्थापयेद्गणनायकम्
At night, at the base of the root and in the pot, one should place the leader of the group.
ब्रह्माणं च तडागेषु वरुणं शान्तियागके
Brahma should be established at the ponds, and Varuna at the peace-sacrifice.
शैवे शैवं तथा प्रोक्तं प्रपायामथ वारुणम्
For Shaiva rites, the Shaiva deity is prescribed; at the water-house, the Varuna deity.
द्रुपदादीति मन्त्रेण स्नापयेत्प्रथमं बुधः
With the mantra 'Drupadāditi,' the wise should first bathe (the image).
सुनाभेति च मंत्रेण द्वाभ्यामेव विशिष्यते
With the mantra 'Sunābha,' in two ways it is especially distinguished.
कांडादिति च मंत्रेण दद्याद्दूर्वाशतं ततः
With the mantra 'Kāṇḍāditi,' then, one should offer a hundred blades of durva grass.
समिच्छेत्यञ्जनं दद्याद्दुःस्थं सुरासुरा जपन्
Reciting 'Samicchetyañjana,' one should offer collyrium, as the gods and demons recite.
यूपे चैव विशेषोयमुत्तराग्रं प्रविन्यसेत्
On the sacrificial post, this special rule applies: the upper end should be arranged.
गायत्र्या प्रथमं चैव आपो हिष्ठेति वै जपन् 2.2.16.
First, reciting the Gāyatrī, and then 'āpo hiṣṭha,' indeed.
अभिमन्त्र्याथ ब्रह्मेति त्रिरात्रं मंत्रमीरयन्
After consecrating, reciting 'Brahma' as a mantra for three nights.
त्वं गन्धर्वेति मन्त्रेण तथा सुभाभ इत्यपि
With the mantra 'You are a Gandharva,' and also 'of good appearance.'
धूरसीति च तथा धूपमास्रज्योतिर्भिर्दीपकम्
One should offer incense, lamps, and lighted wicks as prescribed.
विश्वामीति च निम्न्यंतकांडादिति तथाक्षतम्
One should also offer sacred grass, firewood, and unbroken rice grains.
पादोऽस्येत्यथ भुक्तं स्याद्याः फलिनीति पुनः फलम्
Then, reciting 'This is his foot,' one should offer food, and again, fruit, reciting 'May it bear fruit.'
युवा सुवासेति वस्त्रं नागगन्धेति चन्दनम्
Reciting 'He is young and well-clad,' one should offer cloth; reciting 'With the fragrance of nāga,' one should offer sandalwood.
सुनातीति वचो दद्यात्ततश्चावाहयेत्प्रभुम्
Reciting 'Well praised,' one should offer words, and then invite the Lord.
आचार्यो यजमानश्च ऋत्विग्भोजनमाचरेत्
The teacher and the sacrificer, along with the priests, should partake of the food.
आधारणं चाधिवासं वक्ष्ये तत्रानुसारतः
I will now explain the procedure for placing and consecrating, according to tradition.
पञ्चभिर्ब्राह्मणैः सार्धं गन्धर्वा इति विस्मरन् 2.2.16.
Together with five brāhmaṇas, forgetting the Gandharvas—thus it is stated.
याः फलिनीति च फलं पूगतानामवर्जनम्
Reciting 'May it bear fruit,' one should offer fruit, avoiding those that are overripe.
रूपेन वेति मन्त्रेण मुद्गरं च निवेदयेत्
With the mantra 'By form,' one should offer a pestle.
निर्मथनं ततः कार्यमिति साधारणो विधिः
Then, churning should be performed; this is the general rule.
विनाधिवासनं विप्राः प्रतिष्ठानं समाचरेत्
Without consecration, O brāhmaṇas, one should perform the installation.
ततः प्रयत्नतः कार्यं पूर्वाह्ने रात्रियोगतः
Then, with great care, the rite should be performed in the forenoon or at night.
स्थंडिले हस्त मात्रेण वालुकानिर्मितेऽपि च
On a sand altar, made to the measure of a hand, or even so constructed, the rite is to be performed.
एकैकांगुलको विप्राः पीठे नास्ति विचारणा
O brāhmaṇas, if the seat is only a finger's breadth, there is no objection.
ततो दशांगुले पक्षे दशांगं शृणुत द्विजाः
Now, hear about the ten-finger measure, O twice-born, in the case of a ten-finger seat.
