ततः पायसमादाय उत्थाय च समन्त्र कम्
Then, taking the rice pudding, he rises, reciting the mantra.
सपवित्रं दक्षकरे गृहीत्वा प्रोक्षणीयकम्
With a purifying thread in his right hand, he takes the sprinkling vessel.
अग्निं पर्युक्षयेत्पश्चाद्दक्षिणावर्तकेन च
Afterwards, he should sprinkle the fire, moving in a clockwise direction.
संयावार्थं च भो विप्रा अग्निवत्तत्र देशिकः
O Brahmins, for the purpose of offering, the teacher should attend to the fire there.
कमंडलुं परे हस्ते ततो दक्षकरेण तु
He places the water pot in the other hand, then uses his right hand.
अंते च देवतोद्देशं प्राजापत्यं समीरयन्
At the end, he invokes the deities, stirring the Prajapatya offering.
वायुकोणं समारभ्य वह्निकोणान्तकेन तु
Beginning from the wind corner, and ending at the fire corner.
अग्नीषोमात्मकं चैव जुहुयाद्राक्षसादितः
He should offer the oblation to Agni and Soma, to ward off the demons.
पश्चात्स्विष्टं ततो दद्याद्दद्याच्च मतिभिस्तथा 2.2.13.
Afterwards, he should give the svishṭa offering, and likewise with discernment.
उद्वाह इति मंत्र स्य अथर्वण ऋषिः स्मृतः
The mantra 'udvāha' is attributed to the Atharvan sage.
प्रकृते योजयेन्मन्त्री स्तुतौ चापि नियोजयेत् छंदश्च बृहती ख्यातं तदेवाग्निः प्रकीर्तितः
The priest should apply it to the rite, and also use it in praise; the meter is known as Brihati, and it is called Agni.
इडो गतमिति मन्त्रस्य ऋषिः को गुह्यसंज्ञकः
For the mantra 'iḍo gatam', the sage is known as Guhya.
उद्वर्तन इति मंत्रस्य ऋषिः को नु प्रकीर्तितः
For the mantra 'udvartana', which sage is declared?
मखविधानवर्णनम् कुशकण्डीं स्वगृह्येन कृत्वाग्निं चार्चयेत्ततः
Having made a ring of kusa grass in his own house, he should then worship the fire.
आघाराज्यभागौ तु महाव्याहृतयस्त्रयः
The two portions of clarified butter for the oblation, and the three great vyāhṛtis.
एतन्नित्यं हि सर्वत्र होमे कर्मणि निर्दिशेत्
This should always be prescribed in every sacrificial act.
अग्नये चैव सोमाय आज्यभागौ प्रकीर्तितौ
The clarified butter portions are designated for Agni and Soma.
अयाश्चाग्ने इति तथा ये ते शतमनुत्तमम्
And also, 'ayāścāgne', thus, those hundred excellent ones.
प्राजापत्याहुतिश्चैका स्विष्टकृच्चापरा स्मृता
There is one oblation for Prajapati, and another known as the Sviṣṭakṛt.
कृत्वा सकृद्देवतोद्देशं होमं पश्चात्समाचरेत्
After performing the oblation once for the deities, one should carry out the ritual thereafter.
अन्यत्र विपरीतेन स्वाहांतेन हुनेद्बुधः
Elsewhere, the wise should offer with the ending 'svāhā' in the reverse manner.
नित्यं वर्ज्यं शतार्धेन वैश्वदेवे तथैव च
Always avoid using half a hundred in the Vaiśvadeva rite, and likewise in other cases.
एकाहे वाघारारज्यौ कृत्वा नैमित्तिकीं कृतीः 2.2.14.
On a single day, after performing the Āghāra and Ājya rites, one may carry out the occasional ritual.
विशेषतस्त्र्यहादौ तु अघारावाज्यपूर्वकम्
Especially at the beginning of a three-day period, the Āghāra should be preceded by the Ājya offering.
आघाराराज्यपूर्वेण ततो नैमित्तिकं चरेत्
With the Āghāra and Ājya performed first, one should then carry out the occasional rite.
द्विजातिः पतितो यत्र द्वित्रिकं च चतुश्चतुः
Where a twice-born has fallen, two, three, or four should be performed.
द्विजातीनां विवाहे तु नैत्यिकं प्रथमं भवेत्
At the wedding of the twice-born, the regular rite should come first.
दद्यादेकं च नित्यं च पृथङ् नित्यं न चाचरेत्
One should give a single offering and the regular one separately, but should not perform the regular one.
एकस्मिन्दिवसे कुर्यात्तत्रापि नैत्तिकं त्यजेत्
On a single day, one may perform, but even there, the occasional rite should be omitted.
अजस्यानियमे चेन्द्रोऽधिश्रयणं विवस्वतः
In the unrestricted rite for the goat, Indra is invoked as the presiding deity, along with Vivasvat.
