विष्णो रराटमंत्रेण छेदयेदग्रभागतः
With the mantra of Viṣṇu Rarāṭa, cut from the foremost part.
न रसेन न कार्ष्णेन न दृढेन कदाचन
Never cut it with juice, with blackness, nor with hardness.
छेदयेत्पिञ्जुलीं चापि पवित्रमथ देशिकः
The teacher should cut the piñjulī and also the pavitra.
पंक्तिश्छंदो भवेद्देवः संस्कारे विनियोजयेत्
The meter should be Paṅkti; the deity is to be employed in the rite.
कायतीर्थेन तत्कुर्याद्देवतीर्थेन चेत्यपि
This should be done with the sacred water for the body, and also with the sacred water for the deity.
मध्यमामध्यमांगुष्ठ अपामार्गेण मंत्रिभिः
With the middle and ring fingers and thumb, using apāmārga, along with the ministers.
ऋषिः स्याद्गौतमश्छन्दो धर्मराजोऽथ देवता
The seer is Gautama, the meter is Dharmarāja, and the deity as well.
सकृद्द्रव्ये त्रिभिः काष्ठैस्त्रिवारं मंत्रपुष्पकैः
With the substance once, with three sticks, and three times with mantra-flowers.
प्रादेशांतरतश्चैव आज्यस्थालीमथार्पयेत् 2.2.13.
And at a distance of a palm, one should offer into the ghee vessel.
द्यूतं निःसारयेत्तत्तु निरूप्याशु क्रमेण तु
That gambling should be removed, and then quickly settled in order.
ऋषिर्नारायणश्छन्दः पंक्तिरीशोऽथ देवता
The seer is Nārāyaṇa, the meter is Paṅkti, and the lord is the deity.
अवेक्ष्य ईशमारभ्य दक्षिणावर्तकेन तु
Having observed, beginning with the Lord, with a rightward motion.
परिवेष्याज्यस्थालीं च त्रिः सकृद्वा समाहितः
One should serve the ghee vessel either three times or once, with concentration.
ऋषिः स्याज्जमदग्निश्च गायत्री छन्द ईरितम्
The seer is Jamadagni, the meter is Gāyatrī, as has been declared.
घृतस्य च तथा त्वं नो ब्रह्मा वै तृप्यतामिति
And for the ghee, likewise, 'May you, O Brahman, be satisfied for us.'
त्रिरात्रं तु महायोगे सकृदन्यत्र सत्तमाः
For three nights in the great rite, but once elsewhere, O best ones.
अग्रान्मूलं पुनः कुर्यात्संपूज्य च पुनः पुनः
He should again perform the root from the tip, worshipping again and again.
भुवं पुनः प्रतप्याथ प्रोक्षण्युत्तरतो न्यसेत्
Again heating the bhuvaṃ, then he should place the sprinkling vessel to the north.
अंगुष्ठे द्वे अनामे तु गृह्णीयात्तत्पवित्रकम् 2.2.13.
He should take that pavitra with two fingers and the ring finger and thumb.
पाताले त्रिस्तथाकाशे अवेक्ष्याज्यं ततस्त्रिभिः
In the underworld three times, likewise in the sky, having observed the ghee, then with three.
ततः पायसमादाय उत्थाय च समन्त्र कम्
Then, taking the rice pudding, he rises, reciting the mantra.
सपवित्रं दक्षकरे गृहीत्वा प्रोक्षणीयकम्
With a purifying thread in his right hand, he takes the sprinkling vessel.
अग्निं पर्युक्षयेत्पश्चाद्दक्षिणावर्तकेन च
Afterwards, he should sprinkle the fire, moving in a clockwise direction.
संयावार्थं च भो विप्रा अग्निवत्तत्र देशिकः
O Brahmins, for the purpose of offering, the teacher should attend to the fire there.
कमंडलुं परे हस्ते ततो दक्षकरेण तु
He places the water pot in the other hand, then uses his right hand.
अंते च देवतोद्देशं प्राजापत्यं समीरयन्
At the end, he invokes the deities, stirring the Prajapatya offering.
वायुकोणं समारभ्य वह्निकोणान्तकेन तु
Beginning from the wind corner, and ending at the fire corner.
अग्नीषोमात्मकं चैव जुहुयाद्राक्षसादितः
He should offer the oblation to Agni and Soma, to ward off the demons.
पश्चात्स्विष्टं ततो दद्याद्दद्याच्च मतिभिस्तथा 2.2.13.
Afterwards, he should give the svishṭa offering, and likewise with discernment.
उद्वाह इति मंत्र स्य अथर्वण ऋषिः स्मृतः
The mantra 'udvāha' is attributed to the Atharvan sage.
