योजयेल्लेपयेद्विद्वान्घटमाबद्ध्य सत्तमाः
The wise should join and anoint, binding the pot, O best ones.
चतुरस्त्रीकृते क्षेत्रं हस्तमानं तथाननम्
When the field is made quadrangular, its measure should be by the hand, likewise the face.
दक्षे सार्धांगुलं त्यक्त्वा पश्चिमेन परित्यजेत्
On the south, leaving half a finger's breadth, and on the west, he should leave it aside.
आप्यायस्वेति मन्त्रस्य धन्वतरि ऋषिः स्मृतः
For the mantra 'āpyāyasva,' Dhanvantari is remembered as the seer.
तल्लग्नं दक्षिणे चैकं पूर्वार्द्धद्वादशाङ्गुलम्
That which is attached on the south is one, and in the eastern half, it is twelve fingers in length.
कुशमूलेन स्वर्णेन प्रतिष्ठायां च राजते
At the foundation, with the root of kuśa and with gold, and for establishment, with silver.
संस्मरेन्मित्रा वरुणौ ऋषिरौतथ्यसंज्ञकः
He should remember Mitra and Varuṇa, and the sage named Autathya.
तेनैवोर्द्ध्वकरौ कुर्याद्दक्षवामे सकृत्सकृत्
With both hands raised upwards, he should perform the gesture again and again.
सदसंपदृषिः कर्णो विराडिति उदाहृतः 2.2.13.
The sage Sadasampad, the metre is Kārṇa, and the deity is Virāṭ, as declared.
कुशपुष्पोदकेनापि देवतीर्थेन सत्तमाः पञ्चपल्लवतोयेन महायोगे विशेषतः
The excellent ones use kuśa grass, flowers, and water, or water from a sacred place of the gods, and especially in great rites, water with five kinds of leaves.
अथोनस्य च मन्त्रस्य वरिष्ठः परिकीर्तितः
Now, the most excellent form of this mantra is described.
कीशादग्निं समादाय मे गृह्णामीति संपठन् छन्दोनुष्टुप्समाख्यातं वामदेवोऽथ देवता
Reciting, 'I take up the fire for the offering,' he should accept it; the metre is Anuṣṭup, the sage is Vāmadeva, and the deity is also Vāmadeva.
क्रव्यादग्निं परित्यज्य क्रव्यादमग्निमीरयन्
Abandoning the fire meant for flesh, he should invoke the fire not associated with flesh.
अस्य मन्त्रस्य हारीत ऋषिः स्याच्छन्द इष्यते
For this mantra, the sage is Hārīta, and the metre is as desired.
आवाहनं ततः कुर्यात्संसरक्षेति संजपन् विराट् छन्दोऽथ विज्ञेयो देवता च शतक्रतुः
Then he should perform the invocation, reciting 'Protect completely'; the metre is Virāṭ, and the deity to be known is Śatakratu.
वैश्वानर इति ऋचा अग्निस्थापनमीरितम् अनुष्टुप् च भवेच्छन्दो देवता हव्यवाहनः
With the verse 'Vaiśvānara,' the establishment of fire is declared; the metre is Anuṣṭup, and the deity is Havyavāhana.
बध्नासीति च मंत्रेण अग्निं कुर्यात्प्रदक्षिणम् देवता परमात्मा च नमस्कारेण योजयेत्
With the mantra 'Badhnāsi,' he should circumambulate the fire; the deity is the Supreme Self, and he should join with reverence.
ततोग्निदक्षिणे भागे प्रागग्रकुशकुब्जके
Then, on the southern side of the fire, with the tips of kuśa grass bent to the east—
ब्रह्मन्निहोपवेश्यतामिति ब्रह्माणं विनिवेशयेत् 2.2.13.
He should seat the Brahmin, saying, 'Let the Brahmin be seated here.'
द्वाभ्यामिति च मन्त्राभ्यामिति ब्रह्मप्रवेशनम्
With the two mantras beginning with 'dvābhyām,' the entry of the Brahmin is performed.
प्रजापतिर्ऋषिश्छन्दस्त्रिष्टुब्देवोऽथ शंकरः
The sage is Prajāpati, the metre is Triṣṭubh, and the deity is Śaṃkara.
अग्नेरुत्तरभागे च हस्तमानांतरेपि च
To the north of the fire, and also between the hands—
मन्त्रस्य च ऋषिश्छन्दो वामदेवः प्रकीर्तितः
For the mantra, the sage and metre are declared to be Vāmadeva.
श्रीपर्णीसहकारोत्थं वरुणस्य विशेषतः
Especially for Varuṇa, the śrīparṇī and sahakāra woods are prescribed.
दैर्घ्येण च चतुःख्यातकांगुलं च प्रमाणतः
Its length should be four times the measure of a finger.
अभिचारे भवेत्कांस्यं ताम्रं स्याच्छांतिकर्मणि
For rites of enchantment, bronze is used; for pacifying rituals, copper is appropriate.
द्वादशांगुलप्रस्तारं तैजसं मानवर्जितम्
A span of twelve fingers is prescribed for the golden one, which is not to be used by humans.
सागरा अथ प्रीयंतामित्थमाध्यानमाचरेत्
Then, let them meditate in this manner, seeking favor from the oceans.
नैर्ऋते दिक्षु सीतः स्याद्वैश्वदेवे तथैव च 2.2.13.
In the southwest direction, it should be placed, and likewise for the Vaiśvadeva rite.
अस्य मंत्रस्य च ऋषिर्भरद्वाज उदाहृतः
The sage for this mantra is said to be Bharadvāja.
