ऊषतुस्तत्र तौ वीरौ राजमान्यौ महाबलौ 3.3.9.
There, those two heroes, honored by the king, possessing great strength, stayed.
गौरांगं कमलाक्षं च दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा
A fair-complexioned, lotus-eyed one, shining with his own brilliance.
शंखशब्दं चकारोच्चैर्जयशब्दं पुनःपुनः
He loudly made the sound of a conch and repeatedly uttered the cry of victory.
आयाता बहवो विप्रा वेदशास्त्रपरायणाः
Many Brahmins arrived, devoted to the Vedas and scriptures.
रामांशं तं शिशुं ज्ञात्वा प्रसन्नवदनं शुभम्
Recognizing that child as a portion of Rama, with a pleasant and auspicious face,
संजातः कृत्तिकाभे च पितृवंशयशस्करः
He was born resembling the Kṛttikā stars, bringing fame to his paternal lineage.
मासान्ते च सुते जाते ब्राह्मी पुत्रमजीजनत्
At the end of the month, when a son was born, Brāhmī gave birth to a boy.
तदा च ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा बालं शुभाननम्
Then all the Brāhmaṇas, seeing the child with an auspicious face,
तैर्द्विजैश्च कृतो नाम्ना बलखानिर्महाबलः
By those twice-born, the child was named Balakhānin, the mighty one.
चामुण्डो देवकिसुतो निजवंशभयंकरः न तत्याज सुतं राजा बालत्वेऽपि दयापरः ।। 3.3.9.
Cāmuṇḍa, son of Devakī, a terror to his own lineage, did not abandon the boy, though still a child, being full of compassion.
त्रिवर्षांते गते तस्मिन्बलखानौ सुते शुभे
When three years had passed for that virtuous son Balakhānin,
वत्सराजो ययौ देशे गुर्जरे च मदालसाम्। स सुतां च समादाय दिने तस्मिन्समागतः
King Vatsarāja went to the land of Gurjara, taking his daughter Madālasā, and arrived there on that day.
प्राप्ते तस्मिन्वत्सराजे जम्बुकः स्वबलैर्वृतः
When King Vatsarāja arrived, Jambuka, surrounded by his own forces,
रुरोध नगरीं सर्वां राज्ञः परिमलस्य वै
Besieged the entire city of King Parimala.
माहिष्मतैः सप्तलक्षैः सार्द्धं युद्धमभून्महत्
A great battle took place together with seven hundred thousand Māhiṣmatas.
शिवस्य वरदानेन भ्रात्रोर्जातः पराजयः
By the boon of Śiva, defeat befell the brothers.
वेश्यां लक्षारतिं तस्य तं हतं तद्गजं तथा
He killed the courtesan Lakṣārati, as well as her elephant.
गृहीत्वा नगरीं सर्वां भस्मयित्वा गृहं ययौ
Having seized the entire city and reduced it to ashes, he returned home.
दुर्गेषु यानि रत्नानि तानि प्राप्य मुदा ययौ
Having obtained the jewels from the fortresses, he departed joyfully.
कृष्णांशं सप्तमास्यं हि चादधाद्दैवतप्रिया 3.3.9.
The goddess beloved of the gods placed the seventh portion of Kṛṣṇa within her womb.
कल्पक्षेत्रं समागम्य कालिंद्यां तमपातयत्
Having come to the field of Kalpa, she cast him into the Kālindī.
सामन्तो नाम तं गृह्य श्वशुरालयमाययौ
A man named Sāmanta, taking him, went to his father-in-law's house.
भाद्रकृष्णाष्टमीसौम्ये ब्राह्मनक्षत्रसंयुते
On the auspicious eighth day of the dark fortnight of Bhādra, when the Brāhmaṇa and Kṣatra stars were conjoined,
श्यामांगः स च पद्माक्ष इंद्रनीलमणिद्युतिः
He had a dark body, lotus-like eyes, and the radiance of an indranīla gem.
विस्मिता जननी तत्र दृष्ट्वा बालं तमद्भुतम्
The mother was astonished there, seeing that wondrous child.
उदयः किमहो जातो देवानां सूर्यरूपकः
What is this rising, what marvel has occurred—a form of the gods, resembling the sun?
कृष्णांशो भूतले जातः सर्वानन्दप्रदायकः
A portion of Krishna has been born upon the earth, bestowing joy upon all.
इत्याकाशवचः श्रुत्वा ते परं हर्ष माययुः
Hearing these words from the sky, they experienced supreme delight.
श्यामांगं सुन्दरं बालं सर्वलक्षणलक्षितम्
The child was dark-complexioned, beautiful, and marked with all auspicious signs.
तदा तु नगरी सर्वा हर्षभूता बभूव ह 3.3.9.
Then the entire city became filled with joy.
