आश्विने पौर्णमासी तु कौमुदीति प्रकीर्तिता
The full moon in Ashvina is called Kaumudi.
निर्वतयेन्न यः श्राद्धं प्रभाते पैतृकं द्विजः
A twice-born who does not perform the ancestral śrāddha in the morning—
चन्द्राश्विने तु कृष्णायां पञ्चदश्यां यथाविधि
On the fifteenth day of the dark fortnight in Ashvina, as prescribed, with the moon.
प्रदोषसमये लक्ष्मीं पूजयित्वा यथाविधि
At the time of dusk, having worshipped Lakshmi as prescribed.
नदीतीरे गिरौ गोष्ठे श्मशाने वृक्षमूलतः
On the riverbank, on a mountain, in a cowshed, in a cremation ground, or at the root of a tree.
द्विर्भोजनममावास्यां न कर्तव्यं कदाचन
One should never eat twice on the new moon day.
प्रवरविचारवर्णनम् यद्विना व्यत्ययो यस्मात्तस्माच्छास्त्रानुसारतः
The description of the lineages of eminent sages: whatever is without deviation, therefore, is according to the scriptures.
प्रवरत्रयं काश्यपस्य काश्यपाशावनैर्ध्रुवम्
The three principal lineages of the Kāśyapas are certainly among the Kāśyapas.
च्यवनो जामदग्न्यश्च आप्लवायनमेव च
Cyavana, Jāmadagnya, and also Āplavāyana.
शांडिल्यासितदैवलाः प्रवरत्रयमेव च
Śāṇḍilya, Asita, and Daivala are also the three principal lineages.
आत्रेयमाचार्यणस्याबालप्रवरमेव हि
For Ātreya, the lineage of Ācāryaṇa and Ābāla are indeed the principal ones.
अर्थक्षीरमित्रावरुणं पञ्चमं परिकीर्तितम्
Arthakṣīra, Mitra, and Varuṇa are mentioned as the fifth group.
औतथ्यस्य च वाशिष्ठमैन्द्रे चक्रं च क्रौञ्चायनं तथा
For Autathya, there are Vāśiṣṭha, Aindra, Cakra, and likewise Krauñcāyana.
उरुकंटत्रयं विद्यात्कौशिकस्य त्रयं तथा
One should know the three lineages of Urukaṇṭa, and likewise the three of Kauśika.
विश्वामित्रो देवराट्च स्वयं चैव त्रयं मतम् ९ चण्डकौशिकस्य च तथा देवराट् देवरातकम् 2.2.9.
Viśvāmitra, Devarāṭ, and himself—these three are considered; and for Caṇḍakauśika, Devarāṭ and Devarātaka.
तरुंकशाकटायनः स्वयमेव प्रवरत्रयम्
Taruṃka and Śākaṭāyana, and he himself—these are the three principal lineages.
शंखमांगिरसच्यवनं शंखभस्य त्रयं मतम्
Śaṃkha, Māṃgiras, and Cyavana are considered the three lineages of Śaṃkhabha.
सावर्णस्य तु सावर्ण्यच्यवनजामदग्निभार्गवम्
For Sāvarṇa, Sāvarṇya, Cyavana, Jāmadagnya, and Bhārgava.
कृष्णाजिनस्य कृष्णाजिनं विश्वामित्रस्य जैमिनम्
For Kṛṣṇājina, Kṛṣṇājina; for Viśvāmitra, Jaimini.
वात्स्यायनेति विख्यातं कुशिकस्य च पंचमम्
Vātsyāyana is renowned, and the fifth for Kuśika.
गार्ग्यस्य गार्ग्यसामुंच तथांगिरस एव च
For Gārgya, Gārgya and Sāmuṃca, and likewise Āṅgirasa.
वशिष्ठस्य च वासिष्ठं च तथांगिरस एव च
For Vaśiṣṭha, Vāsiṣṭha, and likewise Āṅgirasa.
जाह्वकर्णभवकर्णौ प्रवरौ परिकीर्तितौ
Jahvakarna and Bhavakarna are renowned as the foremost ones.
तदुत्तमेति त्रितयं मित्रावरुणस्य च त्रयम्
After them comes the triad, and also the three of Mitra and Varuna.
कमंडलोत्पलमित्रामित्रावरुण एव च 2.2.9.
Kamandalu, Utpala, Mitra, Amitra, and Varuna as well.
च्यवनस्य तथा ज्ञेयमूर्वच्यवनाप्लवायनम्
Also to be known are Cyavana, Urvacyavana, and Aplavayana.
आगस्त्यस्य अगस्तिश्च माहश्च च्यवनेति च
Of Agastya: Agasti, Maha, and also Cyavana.
ये नोक्ता ये ऽप्यविज्ञातास्ते प्रोक्ताः काश्यपाज्जगत्
Those not mentioned, and those unknown, all these are said to be from Kashyapa in the world.
इति श्रीभविण्ये महापुराणे मध्यम पर्वणि द्वितीयभागे नवमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the ninth chapter of the second section in the middle part of the illustrious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
