अनन्तस्य व्रतं वक्ष्ये सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्
I shall declare the vow of Ananta, which destroys all sins.
द्वादश्यां पूजिते शक्रे ध्वजके वास्तुयष्टिषु
On the twelfth day, having worshipped Indra, or at the flagstaff, or at the site of the sacrificial post,
कृत्वा दर्भमयानन्तं वारिधान्यान्वितं तथा
Having made an image of Ananta from darbha grass, along with grains from water,
चतुर्दश फलैर्मूलैर्जलजैः कुसुमैरपि
With fourteen fruits, roots, aquatic items, and also flowers,
कृत्वा पूपाह्वयं तस्मै दद्यादेकं श्रुतेक्षितम्
Having prepared what is called pūpa, one should offer a single piece, as prescribed in the scriptures.
चतुर्दशग्रन्थियुतं कुंकुमेन विलेपितम्
Bound with fourteen knots and anointed with saffron,
अतः प्रेत चतुर्दश्यां भोजयित्वा तपोधनान्
Then, on the fourteenth day, one should feed ascetics after offering food to the departed.
ततः प्रेतकथां श्रुत्वा शाकैर्नक्तं समाचरेत्
After hearing the tale of the departed, one should observe a night fast with vegetables.
मानमात्रादिकं कृत्वा सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ।। 2.2.8.
By performing the prescribed measure and other rites, one is freed from all sins.
माघे मासि वटापायः कस्य पापं पुनीमहे
In the month of Māgha, what sin do we purify by the banyan offering?
संभवेत्फाल्गुने मासि या च कृष्णा चतुर्दशी
It occurs in the month of Phālguna, when the fourteenth day falls in the dark fortnight.
दिवा तस्या अलाभे तु रात्रियोगे व्रतं चरेत्
If it is not available during the day, one should observe the vow at night.
तिथियोगे च शर्वर्यां संपूर्णे व्रतमाचरेत्
When the lunar day coincides fully with the night, one should observe the vow.
प्रहरेप्रहरे स्नानं स्वयं स्नात्वा शिवस्य च
At every watch, one should bathe, having bathed oneself and also Shiva.
अथ वक्ष्यामि चैत्रादिमासे तु पूर्णिमा यथा महाचैत्रीति सा ज्ञेया पूर्णिमाक्षयपुण्यदा
Now I shall explain, in the month beginning with Caitra, how the full moon is to be known; it is called the great Caitra, and the full moon grants inexhaustible merit.
विशाखादिषु भेदेषु पूर्णचन्द्रो गुरुश्चरेत्
Among the divisions beginning with Viśākhā, when the moon is full, the Guru should perform the rite.
महाज्यैष्ठी विशेषोऽयं प्राजापत्ये यथा रविः
This is the special great Jyeshtha, in the Prajapatya tradition, just as the sun is.
विनापि गुरुणा चन्द्रः कृत्तिका पूर्णिमा तथा
Even without the Guru, the full moon in Krittika and also in Purnima occurs.
रोहिण्यां तु स्थितश्चन्द्रः पौर्णमास्यां तु कार्त्तिके 2.2.8.
When the moon is situated in Rohini, and on the full moon in Karttika as well.
चित्रा वा यदि वा पूर्णा यदा स्यात्पूर्णिमातिथिः
Whether in Chitra or in Purnima, whenever there is the full moon day.
रविणा कृत्तिकायोगाद्रविवारे च पूर्णिमा
When the sun joins Krittika, and Purnima falls on a Sunday.
एवं गुरौ गुरोर्योगे महाचैत्री प्रकीर्तिता
In this way, when Guru is joined with Guru, the great Chaitra is proclaimed.
सर्वमक्षयतां याति फलं चैवाश्वमेधिकम्
All the results become imperishable, and the fruit is equal to the Ashvamedha sacrifice.
भरण्यां कार्त्तिके मासि यदि स्यात्पूर्णिमा तिथिः
If the full moon day falls in Bharani during the month of Karttika.
शालग्रामे महाचैत्री कृतपुण्या महातिथिः
In Shalagrama, the great Chaitra, performed with merit, is a great sacred day.
पुरुषोत्तमे महाज्यैष्ठी महाषाढी तु शृंखले
In Purushottama, the great Jyeshtha and the great Ashadha are in sequence.
महाभाद्री बदर्यां च कुजोऽपि स्यान्नरस्तथा
The great Bhadra is in Badari, and likewise, Mars may be present for a man.
महती मार्गशीर्षे स्यादयोध्यायां तथोत्तरे
The great Margashirsha is in Ayodhya, and in the north as well.
महाफाल्गुनी नैमिषे च निर्दिष्टाः स्युर्महाफलाः ।। 2.2.8.
The great Phalguni is in Naimisha; these are declared to be of great fruit.
अत्र स्म विहितं कर्म शुभं वा यदि वाशुभम्
Whatever act, auspicious or inauspicious, is performed here.
