ययौ महावतीं रम्यां शिवदत्तवरो बली
The mighty Śivadatta, blessed with strength, went to the beautiful city of Mahāvatī.
रुद्रं कपर्दिनं शंभुं शरण्यं शरणं ययौ
He sought refuge in Rudra, the matted-haired Śambhu, the giver of shelter.
सार्द्धं पुराद्बहिर्यातस्त्रिभिः शूरैः सुरक्षितः
He departed from the city, accompanied and protected by three valiant warriors.
हयाः षोडशसाहस्रा वत्सराजस्तु तत्पतिः
King Vatsarāja, the lord there, had sixteen thousand horses.
प्रनष्टो मुलं युद्धं तेषां वीरवरक्षयम् ।।७ अहोरात्रप्रमाणेन महद्घोरमवर्तत
The root of their battle was lost, and the destruction of heroes ensued; for a day and night, a great and terrible conflict raged.
ते हत्वा शात्रवीं सेनां चक्रुर्जयरवान्मुहुः
Having slain the enemy army, they repeatedly raised victorious shouts.
दुद्रुवुः सर्वतो विप्र दृष्ट्वा तान्कालियो नृपः
O brāhmaṇa, seeing them, King Kāliya fled in all directions.
हृदि कृत्वा महादेवं मोहनं बाणमादधत्
Holding Mahādeva in his heart, he took up a bewildering arrow.
शेषास्ते शत्रवः सर्वे रिपुघाताय संययुः 3.3.8.
All the remaining enemies gathered together to destroy their foes.
भीष्मसिंहस्तथा दृष्ट्वा बोधयामास सैनिकान्
Then Bhīṣmasiṃha, seeing this, roused the soldiers.
भैरवाख्येन भल्लेन शत्रुदेहमताडयत्
With an arrow named Bhairava, he struck the enemy's body.
तदा माहिष्मती सेना निर्ययौ सा दिशौ दश
Then the army of Māhiṣmatī marched out in all ten directions.
भल्लेन तच्छिरः कायादपाहरत भूमिपः
With an arrow, the king severed that head from the body.
कालियं ते पराजित्य तं शत्रुं प्रत्यषेधयन्
Having defeated Kāliya, they repelled that enemy.
मोहयित्वा रिपून्सर्वान् ययौ स्वं निवेशनम्
After bewildering all the enemies, he returned to his own camp.
तदा परिमलो राजा दृष्ट्वा शत्रुपराजयम्
Then King Parimala, seeing the defeat of the enemy,
जयचन्द्रस्तु तच्छुत्वा परं विस्मयमागतः
And Jayacandra, hearing of this, was filled with great astonishment.
भीष्मसिंहे गते लोके पंचमासान्तरे नृपे
When Bhīṣmasiṃha departed from the world, in the fifth month, O king,
सा तु गुर्जरभूपस्य तनयाख्या मदालसा 3.3.8.
She was the daughter named Madālasa of the king of Gurjara.
श्रुत्वा तज्जन्म नृपतिर्विततार धनं बहु
Hearing of her birth, the king distributed much wealth.
सहदेवांश एवासौ भुवि जातः शिवाज्ञया
He was born on earth from the lineage of Sahadeva, by the command of Shiva.
गतौ गोपालके राष्ट्रे भूपतिर्दलवाहनः
The king Dalavāhana went to the land of the cowherds.
सहस्रचंडिकाहोमे नानाभूपसमागमे
During the thousand Candī sacrifices, with the gathering of various kings,
पूर्वं हि नृपकन्याभ्यां प्रत्यहं बंधनं गतौ
Previously, by the two royal maidens, a daily bond was formed.
देवकीं देशराजाय ब्राह्मीं तस्यानुजाय वै
Devakī was given to the king of the land, and Brāhmī to his younger brother.
लक्षावृत्तिं तथा वेश्यां गीतनृत्यविशारदाम्
A courtesan skilled in singing and dancing, with an income of a hundred thousand, was also given.
शतं गजान्रथान्पंच हयांश्चैव सहस्रकान्
A hundred elephants, five chariots, and a thousand horses were given.
बहुद्रव्ययुतां कन्यां दासदासीसमन्विताम्
A maiden endowed with much wealth, accompanied by male and female servants.
मलना तां वधूं दृष्ट्वा तस्यै ग्रैवेयकं ददौ
Malana, seeing that bride, gave her a necklace.
राजा च परमानन्दी देशराजाय शूरिणे
The king, greatly delighted, gave it to the heroic king of the land.
