चतुर्थीभरणीयोगे भवेच्चरदिनं यदा
Or when the fourth lunar day coincides with Bharaṇī (nakṣatra) during the day,
शिवा शांता सुखा चैव चतुर्थी त्रिविधा स्मृता
The fourth lunar day is declared to be of three kinds: auspicious, peaceful, and pleasant.
कार्त्तिके तु भवेच्छाया तथा माघे तु कीर्त्यते भवेत्सहस्रगुणितं श्राद्धं भवति चाक्षयम्
In Kārttika, there is the shadow; in Māgha, it is renowned; the śrāddha performed then becomes a thousandfold and imperishable.
गणेशे कारयेत्पूजां मोदकादिभिरादरात्
One should worship Gaṇeśa with modakas and other offerings, with reverence.
श्रावणे मासि पञ्चम्यां शुक्लपक्षे विशेषतः
Especially in the month of Śrāvaṇa, on the fifth lunar day of the bright fortnight,
तेषां कुले प्रयच्छंति अभयं प्राणरक्षणम्
They grant fearlessness and protection of life to their family.
द्वादश्योभयलेखे च गोमयेन विशेषतः
On the twelfth day, especially, one should write with cow dung.
सुप्ते जनार्दने कृष्णपञ्चम्यां भवनांगणे
When Janārdana is asleep, on the Kṛṣṇa Pañcamī, in the courtyard of the house,
पिचुमंदस्य पत्राणि स्थापयेद्भवनोदरे 2.2.8.
One should place leaves of the picumaṇḍa tree inside the house.
येयं भाद्रपदे षष्ठी षष्ठी च द्विजसत्तम
This sixth lunar day in Bhādrapada, O best of twice-born,
षष्ठ्यां फलाशनो विप्रा विशेषान्माघकार्तिके
On the sixth lunar day, especially in Māgha and Kārttika, the brāhmaṇas should eat fruits.
शुद्धे पक्षे च सप्तम्यां यदा संक्रमते रविः महाजया तदा स्याद्वै सप्तमी भास्करप्रिया
When, in the bright fortnight, on the seventh lunar day, the sun transits, then that Saptamī is called Mahājayā, beloved of Bhāskara.
अपराजिता तु भाद्रस्य महापातकनाशिनी
Aparājitā in Bhādra destroys great sins.
शुक्ला वा यदि वा कृष्णा षष्ठी वा सप्तमी तु वा
Whether the sixth or seventh lunar day is bright or dark,
आश्विनस्य सिताष्टम्यामष्टादशभुजां यजेत्
On the bright eighth lunar day of Āśvina, one should worship the eighteen-armed Goddess.
आषाढे श्रावणे मासि शुक्लाष्टम्यां च चंडिकाम्
In Āṣāḍha and Śrāvaṇa months, on the bright eighth lunar day, one should worship Caṇḍikā.
चैत्रमासि सिताष्टम्यामशोककुसुमैर्द्विजाः
In the month of Chaitra, on the bright eighth day, O twice-born, with ashoka flowers—
सत्यष्टममुहूर्ते वा रोहिणीसहिताष्टमी
Or at the true eighth muhurta, or when the eighth day coincides with Rohini—
एकादशीनां कोटीनां व्रतैश्च लभते फलम् 2.2.8.
One attains the merit of performing ten million Ekadashi vows.
अशक्तोऽन्यक्रियां कर्तुमुपवासं तु केवलम्
If one is unable to perform other rites, then only fasting should be observed.
न कालनियमस्तत्र न वारनियमः क्वचित्
There is no restriction of time there, nor is there any rule regarding the day.
त्रिकालं पूजयेद्देवं दिवा रात्रौ विशेषतः
One should worship the deity three times a day, especially during day and night.
दिवा तिथेरलाभे तु न कुर्याद्विधिवद्व्रतम्
If the tithi does not occur during the day, the vow should not be performed according to rule.
सप्तमी सार्धयामं च रोहिणी वा न संस्पृशेत्
If the seventh day extends into half a yama, or if Rohini does not coincide, it should not be observed.
प्रागारंभं प्रकुर्वीत अधिमात्राधिके व्रती
If the vow exceeds the prescribed measure, one should begin earlier.
यत्र तत्रोपवासी स्याद्यामाष्टकव्रतं चरेत्
Wherever fasting is required, there one should observe the Yamashtaka vow.
तत्परे चाऽन्नजन्यं वा न कुर्यात्पारणं गृही
Afterwards, one should not break the fast with food produced from grains.
नक्षत्रयोगे ग्रहणे पूजयेत्परमेश्वरम्
When the lunar mansion coincides with an eclipse, one should worship the Supreme Lord.
दिवाष्टम्यां मुहूर्ते वा प्राजापत्येन संयुतम् 2.2.8.
On the daytime Ashtami, or at the proper muhurta, joined with Prajapatya—
मुहूर्तांते च मासांते अष्टम्यामपि रोहिणी
At the end of the muhurta, or at the end of the month, if Ashtami coincides with Rohini—
