अमावास्यपार्वणे च सा तिथिः पितृपूजने
On the new moon and full moon, that tithi is for the worship of ancestors.
अस्तगामितिथिर्यत्र सा तिथिः पितृमंदिरम्
Where the tithi has set, that tithi is for the abode of ancestors.
शुक्लपक्षे च कृष्णे च यो योगः परपूर्वयोः सा पूज्या च स्वकृत्येषु पक्षयोरुभयोरपि
In both the bright and dark fortnights, the conjunction of the later and earlier tithis is to be honored in one's actions in both fortnights.
पूज्या हि व्यस्तं संत्यज्य पूर्वं चैकादशीयुगम्
Indeed, the honored tithi is to be observed, abandoning the separated one and the earlier combination of Ekadashi.
एता उपोष्यास्तिथयः पुण्याः स्युर्धर्मवेदिभिः
These tithis are to be observed as fasts; they are auspicious for those who know dharma.
बाणेन विद्धा या षष्ठी मुनिविद्धा तथाष्टमी
The sixth tithi pierced by Bana and the eighth pierced by a sage.
अमावास्या भूतविद्धा नोपोष्या मुनिनापि च
The new moon pierced by spirits is not to be observed even by a sage.
विद्धा ये नाभिनिन्द्याः स्युर्युक्तास्तेनाभिनन्दिताः
Those pierced tithis are not to be condemned; when proper, they are to be praised.
तामस्तां तु तिथिं प्राप्य युग्मान्यपूज्यतामियुः 2.2.7.
Having attained such a tithi, the paired ones become unworthy of worship.
नक्तादिव्रतयोगे तु दिवासंवर्द्धमर्करान्
In the conjunction of night and other vows, the sun increases during the day.
रात्रियोगं विनापि स्यादेकादश्यादिकं व्रतम्
Even without the conjunction of night, the vow beginning with Ekadashi may be observed.
एकादश्युपवासं तु द्वादशीयोगतश्चरेत्
One should perform the Ekadashi fast according to the conjunction with Dvadashi.
रात्रियोगे तु संपूर्णा सोपास्यैकादशी सदा
When the Ekadashi is complete during the night conjunction, it should always be observed with worship.
निशि तु स्याद्यदा षष्ठी सप्तमी नवमी दिवा
But if the Shashthi, Saptami, or Navami occurs at night, or during the day—
एवं त्रयोदशीं कृष्णां विधिप्राप्तां विना द्विजाः
In this way, the prescribed Krishna Trayodashi should not be observed by twice-born ones if it is not properly attained.
दिवा त्रयोदशीयुक्ता कृष्णोपोष्या चतुर्दशी
If the Trayodashi falls during the day, then the Krishna Chaturdashi should be observed with fasting.
त्रिसंध्यव्यापिनी प्राप्य यदि कुर्यादुपौषणम्
If one obtains a tithi that spans all three junctions of the day, then one may perform the Upavasa.
चतुर्दशीमतिक्रम्य सिनीवाल्यां तु पारणात्
Having passed the Chaturdashi, one should break the fast at the time of Sinivali.
सप्तमी ललिता भाद्रे शक्तोत्थानं च वारुणी 2.2.7.
The Lalita Saptami in Bhadra, the Shaktotthana, and the Varuni should be observed.
त्रिसंध्याव्यापिनी पूर्वे परतो वर्द्धते यदि
If a tithi spanning all three junctions increases after the previous one—
ऋक्षाभावे परा ग्राह्या त्रिसंध्यव्यापिनीष्वपि
In the absence of the proper nakshatra, the later one is to be taken, even among those spanning all three junctions.
अभावे चोत्तराषाढा धनिष्ठा च विशिष्यते
And in the absence of Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta is considered superior.
उदये संयुता ग्राह्या सा तिथिश्चोत्तमा भवेत्
A tithi joined at sunrise is to be taken; that tithi is considered the best.
रविचक्रवता ग्राह्या रथे तिथ्यादेरपि च
The tithi should be taken as with the sun's course, even at the start of the lunar day.
अपरेऽपि च सर्वत्र हलानां वाहनं त्यजेत्
Elsewhere too, in all cases, the use of plough animals as vehicles should be avoided.
नराश्वगोगजादीनां वाहनात्पातकी भवेत्
One becomes sinful by using men, horses, cows, elephants, and similar beings as vehicles.
कर्तुर्गोमहिषादीनां गर्दभोष्ट्रखरस्य च
For the doer, this includes cows, buffaloes, donkeys, camels, and mules.
बहुकालिकयज्ञे च यज्ञश्राद्धे तथैव च
In sacrifices lasting many days, and likewise in yajna-shraddha ceremonies—
नित्यश्राद्धेऽप्यम्बुघटे यच्छ्राद्धं मासिकं भवेत् 2.2.7.
Even in daily shraddha, and in water-pot shraddha, as well as in monthly shraddha—
कुर्यादंबुघटश्राद्धं न कालनियमं क्वचित्
One should perform water-pot shraddha, without any restriction of time.
