सप्ताङ्गं कलशे ज्ञेयं पञ्चाङ्गमथ वा पुनः
The pot is to be known as having seven parts, or alternatively, five parts.
अथ वाक्षतपुष्पेषु देवमावाह्य पूजयेत्
Then, with unbroken rice and flowers, one should invoke and worship the deity.
वटस्याश्वत्थवृक्षस्य धातकीबिल्वकस्य च
Of the banyan, the sacred fig, the dhātakī, and the bilva trees—
सौवर्णा राजता वापि ताम्राद्या मृन्मयास्तथा
Made of gold, silver, copper, or even clay—
अभेद्याः सुषमाः प्लक्षाः सर्वे आद्याः सुपूरिताः
The foremost fig trees are all unbreakable, well-formed, and fully grown.
एक त्रिंशाङ्गुलं कुर्यात्कालाहे द्विगुणं शतम्
One should make a measure of thirty-one fingers; in the case of a time-measure, it is twice a hundred.
तैजसैः कारयेन्मानं मृन्मये मानमुच्यते
The measure should be made of gold; the measure made of clay is also prescribed.
कलशस्थापनं वक्ष्ये यत्र सन्निहिताः सुराः
I shall explain the placing of the pot, where the gods are present.
यज्ञे साधारणं वक्ष्ये यद्विधानं यथामतम् 2.2.5.
I shall describe the general procedure in the sacrifice, as it is traditionally understood.
चतुरस्रोत्तरं भित्त्वा चोर्ध्वाधोमानतः समम्
Having pierced the four corners, one should make the upper and lower parts equal.
मार्जयेत्स्वस्तिकाकारं तुर्यमात्रं यथा भवेत्
One should purify (the ground) in the shape of a swastika, so that it becomes of the fourth measure.
स्योना पृथिवीति मंत्रेण कुर्याद्भूभिपरिग्रहम् ऋषिर्नारायणोऽस्य स्याद्गायत्री देवता रविः
With the mantra 'Syonā pṛthivī,' one should take possession of the ground; the seer of this is Nārāyaṇa, the meter is Gāyatrī, and the deity is the Sun.
विनियोगः स्थापने च तथा भूमिपरिग्रहः
The application is for the placing and likewise for the taking possession of the ground.
अस्य मन्त्रस्य च ऋषिर्गौतमः परिकीर्तितः
The seer of this mantra is declared to be Gautama.
आजिघ्रं कलशं मह्यां स्थापयेत्कलशं ततः
After smelling the pot, one should then place the pot on the earth.
विन्यासश्चैव कर्तव्यस्त्र्यंगुले ब्रह्ममुद्रया पंक्तिश्छन्दश्च उद्दिष्टो देवता विष्णुरव्ययः
The arrangement should be made with three fingers using the Brahma gesture; the meter is Paṅkti, and the imperishable Viṣṇu is the deity mentioned.
कलशस्थापने चैव सोमयागे च योजयेत्
This should be applied both in the placing of the pot and in the Soma sacrifice.
देवता परमा त्रिष्टुब्देवता सोमभावितः
The supreme deity is Triṣṭubh; the deity is inspired by Soma.
याः फलिनीति मंत्रेण प्रदद्यात्सफलाक्षतम् त्रिष्टुप्छन्दो गणपतिर्देवता परिकीर्तिता ।। 2.2.5.
With the mantra 'Yāḥ phalinī,' one should offer fruits with unbroken rice; the meter is Triṣṭubh, and the deity is declared to be Gaṇapati.
बदरं नागरं चैव धात्री च पिचुमर्दकम्
Jujube, citron, myrobalan, and Picumarda should be used.
हिरण्यगर्भेति ऋचा पञ्चरत्नानि निक्षिपेत् सविता देवता चास्य रत्नन्यासेति योज येत्
With the verse 'Hiraṇyagarbha,' one should deposit five jewels; Savitṛ is the deity, and this is to be applied in the placing of the jewels.
अमृतीकरणं कुर्याद्दैवशुल्बनमेव च
One should perform the making of nectar and also the divine measurement.
श्रीश्च ते इति मन्त्रेण दद्यात्पुष्पं सचन्दनम्
With the mantra 'śrīśca te', one should offer flowers along with sandalwood.
काण्डादिति च मन्त्रेण दद्याद्दूर्वाक्षतं पुनः
With the mantra 'kāṇḍāditi', one should again offer dūrvā grass and rice grains.
तिलाश्च माषा मुद्गाश्च श्यामाकाः शालयः स्मृताः
Sesame seeds, black gram, green gram, wild millet, and rice are prescribed.
मासवर्णनम् क्रियते तद्विधं संख्ये भवेन्मास श्चतुर्विधः
Description of Months: The reckoning is made in this way; a month is of four kinds.
चान्द्रः सौरः सावनश्च नाक्षत्रश्च तथापरः
They are lunar, solar, civil (sāvana), and stellar (nakṣatra) months.
एकराशौ रविर्यावत्स मासः सौर उच्यते
The period during which the sun remains in a single zodiac sign is called a solar month.
नाक्षत्रमासोऽश्विन्यादिरेवत्यन्तो हि विश्रुतः
The stellar month is well known as beginning with Aśvinī and ending with Revatī.
तंत्रेणैकतिथेर्भागकालो दिवस ऐन्दवः
By calculation, the time of a single lunar day (tithi) is called an 'aindava' day.
