नवमे कोटिहोमे च देवतानां च स्थापने
In the ninth koti-homa and in the installation of deities—
तडागे पुष्करिण्यां च अर्धार्धं परि कीर्तितम्
In a tank or a pond, half of the measure is declared.
जीवतश्च वृषोत्सर्गे गयाश्राद्धे तथैव च
In the release of a bull during one's lifetime, and likewise in the ancestral rite at Gayā—
दंपत्योश्च वृषोत्सर्गे मानमेकमुदाहृतम् 2.2.3.
For the release of a bull by a married couple, one measure is stated.
राज्ञः करग्रहे चैव दीक्षायां दान कर्मणि
When the king seizes property, and in the acts of initiation and giving—
ग्रहयागे प्रतिष्ठायां सुवर्णशतरत्तिकः
In the worship of planets and in consecration, a hundred times the gold measure is prescribed.
देवानां ब्राह्मणानां च दानं यस्य प्रकल्पितम्
Whatever gift is prescribed for the gods and for brāhmaṇas—
नानास्य किञ्चिद्दातव्यं संगभंगो भवेद्यतः
Nothing different should be given, for otherwise there would be a break in the sequence.
यज्ञेषु होमे यद्द्रव्यं काष्ठमाज्यादिकं च यत्
Whatever materials are used in sacrifices and offerings, such as wood, ghee, and the like—
अनादिदेवतार्चायां पूजास्नानादिकर्मणि
In the worship and bathing rituals for beginningless deities—
प्रत्यक्षं दक्षिणां दद्याद्यज्ञदानव्रतादिके
One should give the prescribed fee directly in sacrifices, gifts, and vows.
अतो दत्तं पुरा दत्तं दातव्यं चैव संप्रति
Therefore, what was given before, what is given now, and what should be given at present—
दत्तानि विधिवत्पुंसां देवदानानि यानि हि
The gifts given by men to the gods, according to proper rule,
दातव्यान्यपि तान्येव कारयेत्परिवर्त्तनम् 2.2.3.
Those same gifts should also be given, and one should ensure their proper exchange.
वरणं च कदा कुर्यात्तन्त्रे कुर्याच्च दक्षिणाम्
When should one make a selection? One should give the prescribed fee in the ritual.
कांचनस्य भवेद्रौप्यं रौप्ये कांचनमुद्विशेत्
For gold, let there be silver; for silver, let gold be given in return.
पानीयस्य तु पानीयं व्रीहीणां व्रीहिदक्षिणा
For water, water should be given; for rice, the fee should be rice.
पशूनां च चतुष्पादा देवस्य देवदक्षिणा
For four-footed animals, the divine fee is to be given to the deity.
आचार्यस्यैव भागैकं यजमानः प्रदास्यति
The sacrificer must give one share to the teacher alone.
पात्राणामृत्विगादीनां भागत्रयमुदाहृतम्
Three shares are prescribed for the officiating priests and others.
ः आचार्याद्यंशतः कश्चित्क्षीणवित्तं समाहरेत्
If someone is lacking in wealth, he may collect a portion from the teacher’s share.
मानाशक्तौ तु यज्ञानां यद्देयं यज्ञसिद्धये
According to one’s means, whatever should be given for the completion of the sacrifice,
नमेरुफलपुष्पाणि देयान्येतानि सर्वतः
Names, forms, and flowers—these should all be offered everywhere.
देवताप्रतिमाद्यं च शिरोनाभिस्तथैव च 2.2.3.
The image of the deity, as well as the head and navel, likewise,
दक्षिणावर्तशंखं च हरिवंशस्तथा खिलः
A right-turning conch, the Harivamsha, and the Khila text,
अमूल्यान्याहुरेतानि दत्त्वानन्तफलानि च
These are said to be priceless; by giving them, one obtains endless rewards.
क्षुद्रलिंगे स्वर्णमूल्यं पादार्धं श्रीधरेपि च
For a small emblem, half the value in gold is prescribed, and the same for a Śrīdhara emblem.
यथा पुस्तकमात्रेण स्वर्ण पादार्धमिष्यते
As with a single book, half the value in gold is considered suitable.
हरिवंशे श्लोकशते स्वर्णमेकं प्रकीर्तितम्
For a hundred verses of the Harivamsha, one gold coin is declared.
कपिलायां सुवर्णार्धं धेनुमात्रे पुराणकम्
For a tawny cow, half a gold coin; for a single cow, the Purana text.
