तदा तु लक्षणो वीरो भगवन्तमुषापतिम्
Then the heroic Lakshana approached the blessed lord, the husband of Usha.
पक्षमात्रांतरे विष्णुर्जगन्नाथ उषापतिः
Within half a lunar month, Vishnu, Lord of the Universe, the husband of Usha,
इत्युक्तः स तु तं देवं नत्वोवाच विनम्रधीः
Thus addressed, he bowed to that god and spoke with a humble mind.
इति श्रुत्वा जगन्नाथः शक्तिमैरावताद्गजात्
Hearing this, Jagannatha took power from Airavata, the elephant.
आरुह्यैरावतीं राजा लक्षणो गेहमाययौ
Mounting Airavati, King Lakshana returned home.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे वीरास्तालनाद्या मदोत्कटाः
Meanwhile, the heroes beginning with Talanada, intoxicated with pride,
तेन सार्द्धं च महतीं प्रीतिं कृत्वा न्यवासयन्
Together with him, they dwelled, having formed great affection.
ऊचुस्तं शृणु भूपाल वयं गच्छामहे पुरीः दत्त्वाधिकारं पुत्रेभ्यस्तदाऽऽयास्यामि वोऽन्तिकम् ।। 3.3.7.
They said to him, 'Hear, O king, we are going to the cities; granting authority to our sons, we will then come to you.'
तथेत्युक्तास्तु ते राज्ञा स्वगेहं पुनराययुः
Thus addressed by the king, they returned again to their own homes.
पुत्रेभ्यस्तालनो वीरो ददौ वाराणसीं पुरीम्
The heroic Talanada gave the city of Varanasi to his sons.
करीनरी सुललितस्तेषां नामानि वै क्रमात्
Karina and Sulalita—these were their names, in order.
स वै पुत्राज्ञया शूरस्तालनो राक्षसप्रियः
By the command of his sons, the valiant Talanada, beloved of the rakshasas,
तथा वसुमतः पुत्रौ भूपतीदेशवत्सजौ
Likewise, the two sons of Vasumat, who were like kings and rulers of lands,
सिंहिनीनाम वडवां या तु दत्ता भयानका
A mare named Simhini, fierce and terrifying, was given.
पंचशब्दं महानागमिन्द्रदत्तं मनोरमम्
The five-sounded, delightful great elephant, Indradatta by name.
हयं पपीहकं नाम सूर्यदत्तं नरस्वरम्
A horse named Papihaka, given by Surya, with a human-like voice.
त्रयः शूराः समागम्य नगरीं ते महावतीम्
These three heroes, having come together, entered the great city.
सेना षष्टिसहस्रं तत्तेषां स्वामी स तालनः 3.3.7.
Their army numbered sixty thousand, and their lord was Talana.
तैर्वीरै रक्षितो राजा कृतकृत्यत्वमागतः
Protected by these warriors, the king attained fulfillment of his duties.
कालियेन युतः प्राप्तो नर्मदायास्तटे शुभे
Joined by Kaliya, he arrived at the auspicious bank of the Narmada.
पार्थिवैः पूजयामास देवदेवं पिनाकिनम्
With the kings, he worshipped the god of gods, Pinakin.
वरं वरय तेऽभीष्टं भूप आह कृतांजलिः
"Choose your desired boon," said the king, with joined palms.
तथेत्युक्त्वा महादेवस्तत्रैवान्तर्हितोभवत्
Saying, "So be it," Mahadeva at once disappeared there.
मोहनं सर्वसैन्यानां पितुरंतिकमाययौ
Mohanan, of all the armies, came near his father.
गमिष्यामि बलैः सार्द्धं गंगां शुद्धजलां शुभाम्
"I will go with my forces to the auspicious Ganga of pure waters."
भगिनीं प्राह बलवान्विजयैषिणि शोभने
He spoke to his sister, strong and desiring victory, radiant one.
साह ग्रैवेयकं हारं मणिमुक्ताविभूषितम्
She had a necklace for the neck, adorned with gems and pearls.
कालियो लक्षतुरगैः संयुतस्त्वरितोऽगमत्
Kaliya, accompanied by a hundred thousand horses, quickly departed.
दत्त्वा दानानि विप्रेभ्यो जयचन्द्रपुरीं ययौ 3.3.8.
Having given gifts to the Brahmins, he went to Jayachandrapuri.
कान्यकुब्जे महाहारौ न प्राप्तो बहुमूल्यकः
In Kanyakubja, the great necklace of great value was not obtained.
