शुक्लं तंडुलचूर्णोत्थं पीतं तु निशया स्मृतम्
White is produced from rice flour; yellow is known to come from turmeric.
कृष्णं पुलकादिदग्धं रक्तं पीतास्ययोगतः
Black is made from burnt husks and the like; red is obtained by mixing with yellow.
ताम्रवर्णं कुसुंभेन श्यामलं बिल्वपत्रजम्
Copper color is from kusumbha, and dark color from bilva leaves.
सर्वरेखासु विभजेच्छुक्लं मध्ये तु पीतकम् 2.2.2.
Among all the lines, white should be divided, and yellow placed in the center.
पूर्वादिक्रमयोगेन शुक्लादीनि प्रयोज येत्
According to the order starting from the east, one should apply white and the others.
ततः षोडशपत्रेषु पूर्वादिक्रमतो भवेत्
Then, in the sixteen petals, it should be done in the order beginning from the east.
श्यामलं कुंकुमाभं च रक्तं शुक्लं च कृष्णकम्
Dark, saffron-like, red, white, and black.
एवं दद्याद्द्विजः पूर्वे ईशानांतं विभावयेत्
In this way, the twice-born should assign them, contemplating up to the northeast.
तुंडभागे भवेत्पीतं ग्रीवायां शुक्लमेव च
Yellow should be at the beak, and white at the neck.
षडंगुलेष्वंडभागे पीतेन परिकल्पयेत्
In the egg-shaped part, six fingers wide, one should arrange with yellow.
तत्र पीतादिकं लेख्यं पूर्वोक्तं च यथा भवेत्
There, one should draw yellow and the others as previously described.
चतुरंगुलके पादे जानोरूर्ध्वे तु पीतकम्
On the foot, four fingers in length, above the knee should be yellow.
द्व्यंगुलेन भवेच्छ्याममंगुलीष्वपि विन्यसेत्
With two fingers, it should be dark; this should also be applied to the toes.
पदे शुद्धं चांगुलीषु रक्तं श्यामेन भावयेत् 2.2.2.
On the foot, it should be pure; on the toes, red should be considered as dark.
दक्षिणोत्तरतश्चैव रक्तवर्णं विनिर्दिशेत्
On the southern and northern sides, one should designate the color red.
कनिष्ठं सर्वयज्ञेषु विद्यानां सप्तमुत्तमम्
In all sacrifices, the youngest is to be known as the seventh and best among the sciences.
रक्तपीतं रक्तपीतैः कुर्यात्पुच्छचतुष्टयम्
One should make four tails, red and yellow, with red and yellow colors.
सुलिखेन्मूलसंलग्नं बहिष्कोणचतुष्टयम्
One should draw four outer corners joined at the base with a line.
त्रिवृत्तं वेष्टयेत्पश्चात्सितरक्तासितैः क्रमात्
Afterwards, one should wrap three circles in order with white, red, and black.
पीतं वा विलिखेद्विप्रा नश्यंति सकलापदः
Or, O Brahmins, one may draw with yellow; all faults are destroyed.
तस्य कल्पशतोद्भूतं पापं नाशयते धुवम्
It certainly destroys the sin accumulated over a hundred kalpas.
प्रमादाद्वा गृहे क्षेत्रे वृक्षाग्रे चापि भो द्विजाः
Whether by negligence, at home, in the field, or at the top of a tree, O twice-born ones,
पोषणात्कीर्तिमाप्नोति दर्शनात्पापविच्युतिः
By nourishing it, one attains fame; by seeing it, one is freed from sin.
मयूरो ब्रह्मणो मूर्तिर्वृषभश्च सदाशिवः 2.2.2.
The peacock is the form of Brahma, and the bull is always Sadashiva.
क्रौंचो नारायणो देवो व्याघ्रस्त्रिपुरसुंदरी
The crane is the god Narayana, and the tiger is Tripurasundari.
स्नातः पश्यति प्रत्यह्नि ग्रहदोषो न जायते
One who, having bathed, sees it daily does not incur planetary affliction.
अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि मंडले मंडलेष्वपि
Now, I shall further explain, even regarding each and every mandala.
तंडुलोत्थं यवोत्थं वा वर्ज्यं मकररोपणम्
Rice or barley that has sprouted should be avoided in the placement of the makara.
हरितालं सुभद्रं च सदा विघ्नं विवर्जयेत्
Haritala and subhadra should always be avoided as obstacles.
कांचन्याश्च प्रभेदं यच्छस्तं शुक्लगुणं द्विजाः
O twice-born, the division of gold is prescribed as possessing the white quality.
