नियोजयेत्प्रतिष्ठायां नित्यनैमित्तिके शृणु
One should appoint (the offering) at the time of installation, both for daily and occasional rites; listen.
सप्ततेति द्वितीया स्याद्देहिमेति तृतीयिका
'Seventy' is the second (offering); 'give' is the third.
उत्थाय दद्यात्पूर्णां तु नोपविश्य कदाचन
One should rise and offer the full (oblation), never while sitting.
ग्रहहोमे शतांते च पूर्णा एका विधीयते
In the graha-homa, at the end of a hundred, one full (oblation) is prescribed.
सहस्रांते ददेदेकं पुष्पहोमे च सत्तमाः
At the end of a thousand, one should give one (oblation); in the flower-offering, the seventh.
मृदुपुष्पाकृतौ त्वेका केवले चेक्षुहोमके 2.1.20.
In the mild flower-shaped offering, one (oblation) is prescribed; in the exclusive sugarcane-offering, likewise.
सीमंतोन्नयने चैव प्रायश्चित्ताकृतीषु च
In the simantonnayana rite and in expiatory rituals as well,
एवं स्रुचौ समौ कृत्वा उपर्युपरि विन्यसेत्
Thus, having prepared two ladles, one should place them one above the other.
ऋषिछंदादिकं श्रुत्वा प्रतिमंत्रस्य सत्तमाः
Having heard the ṛṣi, chandas, and other details, O best of men, for each mantra,
सप्ततेति ब्राह्मणस्य ऋषिः कौंडिन्य ईरितः
For the mantra 'saptate', the seer is declared to be Kaundinya for the brāhmaṇa.
देहि मेति च मंत्रस्य प्रजापतिर्ऋषिः स्मृतः
For the mantra 'dehi me', the seer is remembered as Prajāpati.
पूर्णा दर्वीति मन्त्रस्य शतक्रतुर्ऋषिः स्मृतः
For the mantra 'pūrṇā darvī', the seer is remembered as Śatakratu.
पुनात्विति च मन्त्रस्य ऋषिः स्यात्पवनः स्मृतः
For the mantra 'punātu', the seer is said to be Pavana.
तुर्यपूर्णा यज्ञमध्ये नकुले द्विजसत्तमाः
The fourth full ladle, in the midst of the sacrifice, O best of twice-born, is for the mongoose.
ऋत्विक्छंदः स्पृशन्सम्यग्दक्षिणांगमथापि वा
The officiant, touching properly the right limb, or even the left,
विश्वामित्रोऽयुतं तत्र होमं कुर्याद्विचक्षणः 2.1.20.
There, the wise should perform the homa ten thousand times with Viśvāmitra.
नागरंगं धातकीं च पूर्णायां च विवर्जयेत्
One should avoid nāgaraṅga and dhātakī in the full ladle.
तस्मात्प्रागेव सतिलान्गणित्वा स्थापयेत्पृथक्
Therefore, having counted the sesame grains beforehand, one should set them aside separately.
धातक्याश्च फलैः संख्या कर्तव्या फलमिच्छता
By the fruits of dhātakī, the count should be made by one desiring fruit.
नागरंगफलैरेव धातक्या बकुलैः फलैः
With the fruits of nāgaraṅga, and with the fruits of dhātakī and bakula.
कर्पूरचंदनैः कुर्याद्धोलिकां यज्ञसिद्धये
One should prepare the dholikā with camphor and sandalwood for the success of the sacrifice.
रक्तगुंजाफलैः संख्यां पुष्टिकामेषु योजयेत्
For those desiring nourishment, the count should be done with red gunja berries.
होता स्यादयुतेनापि एकाहे वेदसंख्यया
The hotṛ may be with ten thousand, or, for a one-day rite, according to the number of Vedas.
लक्षहोमे तु होतारः षडेव परिकीर्तिताः
But in a hundred-thousand oblation, only six hotṛs are mentioned.
नव पंच दशदशकं पंचविंशमथापि वा
Nine, five, ten, ten, or even twenty-five.
नवग्रहमखे विप्राश्चत्वारो वेदवेदिनः 2.1.20.
In the rite for the nine planets, O Brahmins, four knowers of the Vedas are required.
कार्यावयुतहोमे तु न प्रसज्येत विस्तरे
If the ritual cannot be performed in full, it should not be undertaken in an elaborate manner.
कर्तव्याः शक्तितस्तद्वच्चत्वारोऽपि विमत्सराः
As much as possible, four priests without envy should likewise be engaged.
एकमप्यर्चयेद्ब्रह्मा सहस्रे त्वेकब्राह्मणम्
Even if only one Brahmin is available, he should be worshipped as equivalent to a thousand Brahmins.
लक्षहोमस्तु कर्तव्यो यदा वित्तं भवेत्तदा
A hundred-thousand oblations should be performed when wealth is available.
