युयुधाते बहून्मार्गान्कृतवंतौ सुदुर्जयौ
They fought in many ways, both skilled and very hard to conquer.
हते तस्मिन्महावीर्ये कान्यकुब्जा भयातुराः
When that mighty warrior was slain, the people of Kanyakubja were seized by fear.
रणं त्यक्त्वा गृहं जग्मुर्नृपशोकपरायणाः
Abandoning the battle, devoted to the sorrow of their king, they went home.
स्वंस्वं निवेशनं जग्मुर्महीराजभयातुराः
Frightened by the king, each returned to their own dwelling.
महीराजस्तु बलवान्सप्तलक्षबलान्वितः 3.3.6.
But the king, powerful and accompanied by seven hundred thousand troops,
तथा भीष्मः परिमलो लक्षणः पितरं स्वकम्
In the same way, Bhishma, Parimala, and Lakshana approached their own father.
भूमिराजस्य विजयो जयचंदयशो रणे
The victory of the king of the earth, and the fame of Jayachandra in battle.
जयचंद्रः कान्यकुब्जे देहल्यां पृथिवीपतिः
Jayachandra, lord of the earth in Kanyakubja and Delhi.
भीष्मः सिंहस्थिते गंगाकूले शक्रप्रपूजकः
Bhishma, standing like a lion on the bank of the Ganga, worshipper of Indra.
मासांते भगवानिंद्रो ज्ञात्वा तद्भक्तिमुत्तमाम्
At the end of the month, the blessed Indra, recognizing his supreme devotion—
देहि मे वडवां दिव्यां यदि तुष्टो भवान्प्रभुः
"Grant me the divine mare, if you are pleased, O Lord."
ददौ स भगवानिंद्रस्तत्रैवान्तर्हितोभवत्
There, the blessed Indra gave it and then vanished.
तस्मिन्काले परिमलः पितृशोकपरायणः परीक्षार्थं शिवः साक्षात्सर्परोगेण तं ग्रसत्
At that time, Parimala, absorbed in grief for his ancestors, was overtaken by Shiva himself with a serpent-disease, as a test.
व्यतीते पंचमे मासे नृपः शक्तिविवर्जितः
When five months had passed, the king was deprived of strength.
मरणाय ययौ काशीं स्वपत्न्या सहितो नृपः
For the sake of death, the king went to Kashi together with his wife.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे कश्चित्पन्नगो मूलसंस्थितः
Meanwhile, a certain serpent was dwelling at the root.
रुद्राहिं पन्नगः प्राह भवान्निर्दय मन्दधीः
The serpent Rudraahi spoke: "You are merciless and dull-witted."
मूर्खोऽयं भूपतिः साक्षादारनालं पिबेन्नहि 3.3.7.
"This king is a fool; he would even drink molten copper directly!"
राज्ञो देहे परं हर्षं प्रत्यहं प्राप्तवानहम्
Every day I experienced great delight in the king's body.
मूर्खोत्र भूपतिर्यो वै तैलोष्णं यन्न दत्तवान्
Here, the king is a fool who did not give warm oil.
चकार पन्नगोक्तं तद्गतरोगो नृपोऽभवत्
The king did as the serpent said, and was freed from the disease.
ततो जातं स्वयं लिंगमंगुष्ठाभं सनातनम्
Then a self-manifested linga appeared, eternal, resembling a thumb.
निशीथे तम उद्भूते दिक्षु सूर्यत्वमागतम्
At midnight, when darkness had arisen, it became radiant in all directions like the sun.
महिम्नस्तवपाठैश्च तुष्टाव गिरिजापतिम्
With recitations of the Mahimna hymn, he praised the Lord of Girija.
श्रुत्वाह नृपतिर्देवं यदि तुष्टो महेश्वर
Hearing this, the king spoke to the god: 'If you are pleased, O great Lord,'
तथेत्युक्त्वा महादेवो लिंगरूपत्वमागतः
Saying 'So be it,' Mahadeva appeared in the form of a linga.
तदा मलस्तु संतुष्टः प्राप्तो गेहं महावतीम्
Then Malas was satisfied and arrived at the great house.
ततःप्रभृति वर्षांते जयचंद्रपुरीं ययौ 3.3.7.
From that time, at the end of the year, he went to Jayachandrapuri.
दिष्ट्या ते संक्षितो रोगो दिष्ट्या ते दर्शितं मुखम्
By fortune, your disease has been cured; by fortune, your face has been revealed.
यदा मे विघ्न आभूयात्तदा त्वं मां समाचर
Whenever an obstacle arises for me, then you must attend to me.
