त्रिसूत्रीकरणं पश्चाद्वृत्तसूत्रं निपातयेत्
After making the three threads, one should place the circular thread.
जिह्वां प्रकल्पयेत्पश्चात्तस्मादग्निं समाहरेत्
Then, one should prepare the tongue, and after that, bring forth the fire.
नदीपर्वतशालाभ्यः स्त्रीहस्तात्परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid (taking it) from a river, mountain, hut, or from a woman's hand.
तमग्निं प्रतिगृह्णीयादात्मनोऽभिमुखं यथा
One should receive that fire so that it faces oneself.
वागीश्वरीमृतुस्नातां वागीश्वरसमागताम्
A woman who has bathed after her period, or who has united with Vāgīśvarī (the goddess of speech),
कालबीजेन चैशान्यां योनावग्निं विनिक्षिपेत्
Should place the fire in the yoni (womb) in the northeast, with the seed of time.
पितृपिङ्गल दहदह पंचयुग्ममुदीर्य च
Reciting 'Pitṛpiṅgala, burn, burn,' and uttering the five pairs,
वह्निबर्हिषि संयुक्ताः सादियांताः सबिंदवः 2.1.15.
Those joined with the sacred grass on the fire, along with the offerings and drops.
जिह्वास्तास्त्रिविधाः प्रोक्ता यज्ञदत्तेन सत्तमाः
The three kinds of tongues have been declared by Yajñadatta, O best ones.
त्रिमध्वक्तैर्यत्र होमं कर्णिकायां च होमयेत्
Wherever the oblation is made with three kinds of honey, one should offer it in the center.
बहुरूपातिरूपा च सात्त्विका योगकर्मसु
She who is of many forms and superior form, sattvic in yogic actions,
लोहितास्यात्करालास्यात्कालीभासस्य इत्यपि
With a red mouth, a fierce mouth, and also of the form of Kālī—so it is said.
समिद्भेदेषु या जिह्वास्तास्तु तेनैव योजयेत्
The tongues that are in the different kinds of fuel—one should use those accordingly.
त्रिमध्वक्तैर्यथा होमं कर्णिकायां च होमयेत्
As the oblation is made with three kinds of honey, so should it be offered in the center.
बहुरूपा पुष्पहोमे कृष्णा चान्नेन पायसैः ।। इक्षुहोमे पद्मरागा सुवर्णा पद्महोमके
The many-formed one in the flower offering, the black one with food and milk-rice; in the sugarcane offering, the ruby-colored one; the golden one in the lotus offering.
लोहिता पद्महोमे च श्वेता वै बिल्वपत्रके
The red one in the lotus offering, and the white one with bilva leaves.
लोहितास्या पितृहोमे ततो ज्ञेया मनोजवा
The red-mouthed one in the ancestral offering, then the swift-minded one should be known.
समानमाज्यहोमे च निषण्णं शेषवस्तुषु 2.1.15.
The same in the ghee offering, and what remains among the other substances.
कर्णहोमे तु वै व्याधिर्नेत्रे तद्द्वयमीरितम्
If an offering is made into the ear, disease will arise; if into the eyes, both will be afflicted, it is said.
पुत्रं विपत्करं चैव तस्मात्तत्र न होमयेत्
A son will encounter misfortune; therefore, one should not offer oblations there.
प्रवक्ष्यामि विधिं कृत्स्नं यद्विशेषं पुनः शृणु
Now I shall explain the complete procedure; listen again to the special details.
वक्रा ख्याता महाहोमे कृष्णाभा सा क्रतौ मता
The curved (part) is known in the great sacrifice; the dark-hued one is considered appropriate in the rite.
पुष्पपत्रविधौ होमे वह्नेर्जिह्वाः प्रकीर्तिताः
In the rite involving flowers and leaves, the tongues of the fire are described.
इन्द्रकोष्ठं मस्तकं स्यादीशाग्नेये च मस्तके
The Indra compartment is the head, and on the northeast and southeast as well, the head is established.
अविशिष्टं भवेत्पुच्छं मध्ये चोदरसम्भवम्
The undifferentiated part is the tail, and in the middle is the belly region.
हुत्वा व्रीहिगणं तत्र कर्णे पुष्पाहुतिं हुनेत्
After offering a group of rice grains there, one should offer a floral oblation at the ear.
श्रवणे चैव नेत्रे च दक्षिणे चेक्षुखंडकम्
At the ear and also at the eyes, and on the right, a piece of sugarcane.
मारणे पुष्पदेशे तु न चान्यं होमयेत्क्वचित् 2.1.15.
In the place for causing death, only a floral offering should be made, and nothing else should ever be offered.
चन्दनागरुकर्पूरपाटलायूथिकानिभः
It should resemble sandalwood, agarwood, camphor, pāṭalā, and yūthikā flowers.
प्रदक्षिणस्त्यक्तकल्पा छत्राका शिथिला शिखा
Circumambulation is to be done, abandoning the prescribed order; the tuft should be loose and umbrella-shaped.
