अरत्निमात्रे कुंडे तु त्रिश्चैकांगुलतः क्रमात्
In a fire-pit of one aratni in size, three and one finger-breadth should be measured in sequence.
सप्तमेखलकं युक्तं लक्षहोमे न शस्यते
A fire-pit with seven girdles is not recommended for a hundred-thousand oblation sacrifice.
एकांगुलादिमानेन नेमिं संवर्धयेत्सुधीः
With the measure beginning from one finger-breadth, the wise should increase the rim.
वसुहस्ते भानुपंक्तिर्युग्महीनेऽपि ताः क्रमात्
In the hand of Vasu, the row of the sun is arranged, even when the pair is absent, in order.
पार्श्वतो योजयेत्तत्र मेखलास्ता यथाक्रमम् ।। । सार्धांगुलादिमानेन नेमिं संवर्धयेत्सुधीः
There, the bands should be attached on the sides in proper order; the wise should increase the rim by the measure of one and a half fingers and so on.
एकमेखलयागेन योजयेच्छक्तिभावतः 2.1.13.
The joining should be done with each band according to its capacity.
कुंडस्य रूपं जानीयात्परमं प्रकृतेर्वपुः
One should know the form of the pit as the supreme embodiment of nature.
षटचतुर्धा गुणायामविस्तारोन्नतिशालिनी
It should be six or fourfold, possessing length, breadth, and height.
एकैकांगुलतो योनिं कुंडशून्येषु वर्धयेत्
In pits without a central cavity, the yoni should be enlarged by one finger for each.
स्थापयेत्कुंडकोणेषु योनिं तां द्विजसत्तमाः
O best of twice-born, the yoni should be placed at the corners of the pit.
तत्तु कुंडानुरूपं वा सुव्यक्तं सुमनोहरम्
That should be clearly and beautifully made, corresponding to the pit.
यावद्द्वयप्रमाणेन अर्धांगुलक्रमाद्बहिः
Up to twice the measure, extending outward by half a finger at a time.
तत्र तत्र भवेत्कुंडं बिंबशून्यं न होमयेत्
In each place, the pit should be without a central disc; one should not perform the offering there.
अवटोपि उमादेवी बिंबः ख्यातः सदाशिवः
The cavity is Umā Devī, and the disc is always known as Sadāśiva.
त्रयोदशांगुलं हित्वा वह्निहस्तमथापि वा
Leaving thirteen fingers, or even the fire-hand, aside.
तस्य दक्षिणदिग्भागे अग्रतो मंडलं लिखेत् 2.1.13.
On the southern side of it, in front, one should draw a circle.
अर्कहस्तांतरे कुर्याच्छतोर्ध्वांते शतेन वा
Between the sun-hand and the hundredth part at the top, one should make it.
यज्ञमानविधानवर्णनम् अमानेन हतो यज्ञस्तस्मान्मानं न हापयेत्
If the sacrifice is performed with a faulty measure, it is destroyed; therefore, one should not neglect the measure.
शतार्धं प्रथमं मानं शतसाहस्रमेव च
The first measure is one and a half hundred, and also one hundred thousand.
अतः परं तु विभवे राजा वान्यो द्धिजोत्तमाः
After this, according to means, the king or other best twice-born may proceed.
विपाकं कर्मणां सर्वं नरः प्राप्नोति सर्वदा
A man always attains the full result of all actions.
युक्ताश्चापि ग्रहास्तत्र नित्यं शांतिकपौष्टिके
And the planets that are suitable there always bring peace and nourishment.
अद्भुते च तथा शांतिं कुर्याद्भक्तिसमन्वितः
And likewise, with devotion, one should perform a rite of peace in the presence of a marvel.
अद्भुतेषु च सर्वेषु अयुतं कारयेन्नरः
For all marvels, a man should arrange for ten thousand offerings.
लक्षहोमं कोटिहोमं राजा कुर्याद्यथाविधि
The king should perform a hundred-thousand-offering and a ten-million-offering according to prescribed rule.
ग्रहाणां लक्षहोमस्तु कोटिहोमस्तथा कलौ
For the planets, a hundred-thousand-offering is prescribed, and in the Kali age, a ten-million-offering as well.
यत्र यत्र जपः कार्यो होमो वा यत्र कुत्रचित् 2.1.14.
Wherever a recitation or offering is to be performed, at any place whatsoever—
युग्मसाध्यं न कर्तव्यं युग्मतो भयमादिशेत्
A rite meant for a pair should not be performed together; fear is declared to arise from pairing.
एकत्रिंशद्दिनैर्वापि न कुर्याद्व्यत्ययं क्वचित्
One should never make an exchange within thirty-one days.
तृतीये तु सहस्रं स्याद्ग्रहसाध्यः स्मृतो विधिः
On the third day, a thousand is prescribed as the rite for accomplishing the planets.
