बाहुविंशांतरे रोपेत्सहकारं स धर्मवित्
A knower of dharma should plant a sahakara tree at a distance of twenty arms.
श्रैपर्णिकं च पुन्नागं श्रीवृक्षं द्विगुणं तरौ
One should plant shraiparnika, punnaga, and the auspicious tree at double the distance from the tree.
शैलेष्टकादिरचिते चतुर्हस्ते तु संमिते
Constructed from stone, brick, or similar materials, and measured to four cubits.
श्रीविष्णोर्वृक्षपक्षे च वरुणेष्टं च कूपके
On the side of the tree dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and for Varuna, in a small well.
अग्निकार्यं विना कुर्यात्प्रकुर्याच्च सतां गतिम्
One should perform the rite without a fire ceremony, and thus attain the path of the virtuous.

शतवृक्षक्षुद्रवृक्षे दशद्वादश वृक्षके
O Sūta said: Now I shall explain the Tantric procedure, which is also sung in the Purāṇas.
न कूपमुत्सृजेज्जातु वृक्षयागे कथंचन
For a hundred trees, or for small trees, or for ten or twelve trees.
न सेतुं देवयागे तु तडागं न समुत्सृजेत्
One should never abandon a well during a tree sacrifice.
तंत्रे श्राद्धं पृथङ्नास्ति कर्तुर्भेदे पृथग्भवेत्
Nor should one abandon a bridge during a divine sacrifice, nor a pond.
स्वदेशे वर्जयेत्तं तं स्वतन्त्रेण विधीयते
In the Tantric method, there is no separate śrāddha; if the performer is different, it is done separately.
तडागे पुष्करिण्या वा आरामेऽपि द्विजोत्तमाः
In one's own land, one should avoid that; it is prescribed independently.
द्विसहस्राधिकं यत्र तत्प्रतिष्ठां समाचरेत्
O best of twice-born, in a pond, a lotus pool, or even in a garden.
प्रतिष्ठां बिल्ववृक्षे च अन्यथा कर्णवेधनम्
Where there are more than two thousand, one should perform the establishment.
अनंतरं प्रदातव्या लाजा मूर्ध्न्यक्षतादिकम् ।। 2.1.11.
Establishment on a bilva tree, otherwise, is like ear-piercing.
प्रतिमालक्षणवर्णनम् प्रतिमां लक्षणैर्हीनां गृहीतां नैव पूजयेत्
Description of the characteristics of the image.
शैलजा दारुजा ताम्री मृद्भवा सर्वकामदा
One should never worship an image that lacks the proper characteristics.
प्रासादमानमथवा अथवा सर्वलक्षणम्
Whether it is a palace or otherwise, or possessing all auspicious marks,
देवागारस्य यद्द्वारं तस्मादष्टांगुलेन तु
The doorway of the temple should be eight finger-breadths from that point.
अंगुलं वै भवेद्वृद्धिरशीतिश्चतुरुत्तरा
An increase of one finger-breadth should be made, and eighty-four in total.
मुखत्रिभागे चिबुकं ललाटं नासिकां तथा
The chin, forehead, and nose should each occupy a third part of the face.
नयने द्व्यंगुले स्यातां त्रिभागा तारका भवेत्
The eyes should be two finger-breadths, and the pupils should be a third part.
ललाटमस्तकग्रीवं कुर्यात्तत्सममेव तु
The forehead, top of the head, and neck should be made equal in measure.
तुल्यौ नासिकया ग्रीवा मुखेन हृदयांतरम्
The neck should be equal to the nose, and the space between the face and heart.
बाहू च बाहुतुल्यौ च ऊरू जंघे च जाघनम् षडंगुलस्तु विस्तारस्तुल्यांगुष्ठोंऽगुलत्रयम् ।। 2.1.12.
The arms should be equal to each other, as should the thighs, shanks, and hips; the breadth should be six finger-breadths, and the thumb three finger-breadths.
प्रदेशिनी च तत्तुल्या हीना शेषान्नखानखम्
The index finger should be equal to that; the remaining nails are less than the others.
एवं लक्षणसंयुक्ता सा पूज्या प्रतिमा शुभा
A form endowed with such marks is an auspicious image worthy of worship.
