स्वर्गप्रदा धातकी स्याद्वटो मोक्षप्रदायकः
The dhataki tree gives heaven, and the banyan tree bestows liberation.
सर्वशस्यं बलबले मधुके चार्जुने तथा
The madhuka and arjuna trees provide all crops and strength.
जीवंत्या रोगशांतिः स्यात्केशरः शत्रुमर्दनः
Planting the jivanti tree brings relief from disease; the kesara tree destroys enemies.
पनसे मंदबुद्धिः स्यात्कलि वृक्षः श्रियं हरेत्
Planting the jackfruit tree causes dullness of intellect; the kali tree takes away prosperity.
तथा च मर्कटीनीपरोपणात्संततिक्षयः श्रीवृक्षं किंशुकं चैव रोपणात्स्वर्गमादिशेत्
Likewise, planting the markatini tree leads to loss of progeny; planting the shri tree and the kimshuka tree grants heaven.
मंदारे कुलहानिः स्याच्छाल्मले शुकबुद्धिमान्
Planting the mandara tree causes loss of family; planting the shalmali tree makes one wise like a parrot.
उत्पन्ने कुलपातः स्या त्पशोरेव क्षयो भवेत्
When it arises, there is destruction of the family line, and the ascetic's merit is lost.
विना क्रतौ विरुद्धश्च न सिंहं द्विजसत्तमाः 2.1.10.
Without the rite, and if it is opposed, O best of twice-born, there is no lion.
सहकारसहस्रात्तु वरिष्ठं धातकीद्वयम्
Of a thousand mango trees, two dhātakī trees are superior.
पाटलानां शतात्पश्चादेकरक्तवटो भवेत्
After a hundred pāṭala trees, there should be one red fig tree.
तस्माद्वरिष्ठः श्रीवृक्षो जंबूवृक्षः प्रशस्यते
Therefore, the śrī tree is superior; the jambu tree is praised.
तिंदुकस्य त्रयश्चैव जंबूवृक्षस्य पंचकम् एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा कारयेत्कीदृशं बलम्
Three tinduka trees and five jambu trees—having thus spoken, that righteous one should arrange for such strength.
कल्पकोटिसहस्राणि कल्पकोटिशतानि च
Thousands of crores of kalpas and hundreds of crores of kalpas—
जन्मत्रयादिकं पापं विनाश्य स्वर्गमादिशेत्
Destroying sins such as those from three births, one attains heaven.
तुलसीरोपणाच्चैत्र आधिव्याधियुतो भवेत्
By planting tulasī in the month of Caitra, one becomes afflicted with ailments.
आषाढे कीर्तिमाप्नोति श्रावणे परमां गतिम् तुलसी त्रिविधा लोके कृते श्वेता प्रशस्यते
In Āṣāḍha, one attains fame; in Śrāvaṇa, the highest state. Of tulasī, there are three kinds in the world; in the Kṛta age, the white one is praised.
किंचिच्छेदं च यः कुर्यादश्वत्थस्य वटस्य च
Whoever makes even a small cut of the aśvattha or vaṭa tree—
मूलच्छेदेन विप्रेंद्राः कुलपातो भवेदनु सायं प्रातश्च घर्मांते शीतकाले दिनांतरे ।। 2.1.10.
By cutting the root, O best of Brāhmaṇas, the destruction of the family follows. In the evening, morning, at the end of summer, in the cold season, or on another day—
फलमामकुलत्थश्च माषो मुद्गास्तिला यवाः
The fruit of mango, kulattha, māṣa, mudga, sesame, and barley—
अविकाकसकृच्चूर्णं यवचूर्णानि यानि च
Powder of sheep's dung, and whatever barley powders there are—
तमेकं सर्ववृक्षाणां फलपुष्पादिवृद्धिदम्
That one thing causes the increase of fruit and flowers in all trees.
तेनोदकादिसेकश्च कृतो वै वृद्धिमादिशेत्
By sprinkling with that, along with water and so on, growth is ensured.
तेनाशोके प्रसेकः स्यात्सहकारस्य वृद्धिमान्
By that, sprinkling on the aśoka tree brings growth to the mango tree.
दोहदं सर्ववृक्षाणां पूगादीनां विशेषतः
The desire of all trees, especially of areca and others.
प्राक्प्रसूतिर्गवादीनां छागादिमहिषस्य च
Before the birth of cows and other animals, as well as goats and buffaloes,
परस्य सहकारस्य फलं स्यान्नात्र संशयः
The fruit of the sahakara tree belongs to another; there is no doubt about this.
तत्र मासैः सर्षपैश्च पूरयेन्मर्दयेत्ततः
There, one should fill with mustard seeds for months and then press them.
मृतोऽपि जीवयेच्छीघ्रं म्रियमाणोऽपि जीवति 2.1.10.
Even if dead, it is quickly revived; even when dying, it lives.
क्षीरिकाताम्रकैः पत्रैर्धूमं दद्याद्दिनत्रयम्
For three days, one should fumigate with leaves of kshirikatamra.
ततः प्राधान्यतो वक्ष्ये द्रुमाणां दोहदोऽन्यथा
Now, I shall explain in order the special desires of trees, otherwise.
