चक्राकारो लक्षहोमे कोटिहोमे हलाकृतिः
For a lakh-homa, it should be in the form of a wheel; for a crore-homa, in the form of a plough.
एवं शस्योदितां भूमिं शुद्धां पूर्वप्लवान्विताम्
Thus, the praised land should be pure and previously flooded.
सोमं च नागराजानं ततो बीजं सुशोधयेत्
One should purify the soma and the king of serpents, then cleanse the seed.
दिनद्वयांतरे चैव मंत्रैश्च परिमंत्रयेत्
After an interval of two days, one should consecrate it with mantras.
एवमस्येति मंत्रेण त्रिधा जप्त्वा विमार्जयेत्
With the mantra 'evam asya', having recited it three times, one should wipe it clean.
इत्यगृहीतमनुना पञ्चधा परिमंत्रितम्
Thus, with the unaccepted mantra, it is consecrated five times.
भार्यामृतुमतीं स्नात्वा पञ्चमेऽहनि सत्तमाः
Having bathed the wife named Amritamati, on the fifth day, O virtuous ones,
एवं वृक्षस्य संस्कारमध्येऽपि त्वनुगच्छति
Thus, even in the middle of the tree's consecration, you should proceed accordingly.
तुलस्या बीजमादाय वैष्णवर्क्षे द्विजोऽहनि 2.1.10.
Taking the seed of the tulasi plant, the twice-born should plant it in a Vaishnava tree during the day.
एतां तु स्वर्गमाप्नोति सितकुंभे निपातयेत्
By placing it in a white pot, one attains heaven.
अविधौ कूपवाप्यादौ खनने सूयते क्वचित् लभंते न फलं तेषामिह चाभ्येत्यधोगतिम्
If it is sown in an improper place, such as a well, pond, or excavation, sometimes it grows, but those who do so do not obtain its fruit here and instead descend to a lower state.
नदीतीरे श्मशाने च स्वगृहस्य च दक्षिणे
On the riverbank, in a cremation ground, or to the south of one's own house—
पत्रपुष्पफलानां च रजोरेणुसमागमाः
When the leaves, flowers, and fruits come into contact with dust and pollen—
यस्तु वृक्षं प्रकुरुते छायापुष्पफलोपगम् कीर्तिश्च मानुषे लोके प्रत्यभ्येति शुभं फलम्
Whoever plants a tree that provides shade, flowers, and fruit, attains fame among people and receives auspicious results.
अतीतानागताश्चातः पितॄन्स स्वर्गतो द्विजाः
Therefore, O twice-born, he brings his ancestors from the past and future into heaven.
अपुत्रस्य हि पुत्रत्त्वं पादपा इह कुर्वते
Indeed, for one without a son, trees here grant the status of sons.
शतैः पुत्रसहस्राणामेक एव विशिष्यते
Among hundreds and thousands of sons, a single tree surpasses them all.
मुक्तिहेतुः सहस्राणां लक्षकोटीनि यानि च
A tree is the cause of liberation for thousands, hundreds of thousands, and millions.
प्लक्षो भार्याप्रदश्चैव बिल्व आयुष्यदः स्मृतः 2.1.10.
The plaksha tree is said to grant a wife, and the bilva tree is remembered as bestowing long life.
तिंदुकात्कुलवृद्धिः स्याद्दाडिमी कामिनीप्रदः
From the timduka tree comes family growth; the pomegranate tree grants desirability.
स्वर्गप्रदा धातकी स्याद्वटो मोक्षप्रदायकः
The dhataki tree gives heaven, and the banyan tree bestows liberation.
सर्वशस्यं बलबले मधुके चार्जुने तथा
The madhuka and arjuna trees provide all crops and strength.
जीवंत्या रोगशांतिः स्यात्केशरः शत्रुमर्दनः
Planting the jivanti tree brings relief from disease; the kesara tree destroys enemies.
पनसे मंदबुद्धिः स्यात्कलि वृक्षः श्रियं हरेत्
Planting the jackfruit tree causes dullness of intellect; the kali tree takes away prosperity.
तथा च मर्कटीनीपरोपणात्संततिक्षयः श्रीवृक्षं किंशुकं चैव रोपणात्स्वर्गमादिशेत्
Likewise, planting the markatini tree leads to loss of progeny; planting the shri tree and the kimshuka tree grants heaven.
मंदारे कुलहानिः स्याच्छाल्मले शुकबुद्धिमान्
Planting the mandara tree causes loss of family; planting the shalmali tree makes one wise like a parrot.
उत्पन्ने कुलपातः स्या त्पशोरेव क्षयो भवेत्
When it arises, there is destruction of the family line, and the ascetic's merit is lost.
विना क्रतौ विरुद्धश्च न सिंहं द्विजसत्तमाः 2.1.10.
Without the rite, and if it is opposed, O best of twice-born, there is no lion.
सहकारसहस्रात्तु वरिष्ठं धातकीद्वयम्
Of a thousand mango trees, two dhātakī trees are superior.
पाटलानां शतात्पश्चादेकरक्तवटो भवेत्
After a hundred pāṭala trees, there should be one red fig tree.
