पूर्तनिर्णयवर्णनम् बहिर्वेदं तथैवोक्तं शस्तं स्याद्द्वापरे कलौ
The description of the decision regarding pūrta (meritorious works): Outside the Veda, it is likewise stated, and is praised in the Dvāpara and Kali ages.
ज्ञानसाध्यं तु यत्कर्म अंतर्वेदीति कथ्यते
That action which is accomplished through knowledge is called 'inner Veda.'
प्रपापूर्तादिकं चैव ब्राह्मणानां च तोषणम्
Acts such as the construction of wells and ponds, and the satisfaction of Brāhmaṇas.
अकामेन कृतं कर्म कर्म च व्यसनादिकम्
Action performed without desire, and action arising from misfortune.
धर्मस्य कारणं राजा धर्ममेतद्भवेन्नृपः
The king is the cause of dharma; O king, this is dharma.
सप्ताशीतिर्बहिर्वेदी सारमेषां तृतीयकम्
There are eighty-seven external Vedic rites; the third among the best sheep.
तडागकरणं चैव तृतीयं न चतुर्थकम्
The making of a reservoir is also the third, not the fourth.
अधिवासः प्रतिष्ठा च देवतानामविक्रिया
Consecration and installation, and the unchanging nature of deities.
त्रिविधा सा विनिर्दिष्टा उत्तमा चाथ मध्यमा
It is declared to be threefold: superior, and then middling.
त्रिधा भवति सर्वत्र प्रतिष्ठादिविधिर्मतः 2.1.9.
Everywhere, the rule for installation and the like is considered to be threefold.
त्र्यहसाध्यविधानेन अष्टाविंशतिदेवताः
By the method prescribed for three days, twenty-eight deities are to be worshipped.
प्रत्यहं पूजयेत्तत्र जापकास्तत्र षोडश
Each day, one should worship there; in that place, there are sixteen reciters.
चत्वारो याजकास्तत्र त्रयोविंशतिदेवताः
There are four officiating priests there, and twenty-three deities.
एकाहेनैव पूजा च मध्यमः कथितो विधिः
The worship performed in a single day is called the intermediate procedure.
संपूज्य पूज्यते यत्र कनिष्ठोऽसौ विधिः स्मृतः
Where the worship is completed, that is known as the inferior procedure.
नलिनीदीर्घिकागर्तवापीमलप्रपादिकम्
Lotus ponds, deep reservoirs, wells, and places for washing feet—
अग्निकार्यं ततः कृत्वा न कुर्याद्विधिविस्तरम्
After performing the fire ritual there, one should not carry out an elaborate procedure.
वाप्यादेः पुष्करिण्याश्च क्षिपेद्गंगाजलं ततः
Into the pond or lake, one should pour water from the Ganges.
सेतुप्रासादवापीनां प्रतिष्ठां नैव कारयेत्
One should not perform the installation ceremony for bridges, palaces, or reservoirs.
त्रिभिर्वर्णैः प्रतिष्ठार्हा जीर्णानां तु समुद्गताः 2.1.9.
Those that have become worn out and emerged again are fit for installation with three colors.
तस्मान्मानं प्रवक्ष्यामि यन्मानं यादृशं फलम्
Therefore, I will declare the measure, and what result comes from which measure.
एकषष्टिहस्तमितं प्रासादं चोत्तमं विदुः
They regard a palace measuring sixty-one cubits as excellent.
अथ वा देवमानेन कर्तव्यं भूतिमिच्छता
Alternatively, one desiring prosperity should construct according to the divine measure.
सर्वं कुलं समुद्धृत्य स्वर्गलोके महीयते
Having uplifted the entire family, one is honored in the heavenly realm.
पुनः पुनश्च संस्कार्यो लभते मौक्तिकं फलम्
By repeated consecration, one attains the fruit like a pearl.
द्विशतेन शतेनापि प्रासादस्यैष निश्चयः
This is the determination regarding the palace, whether with two hundred or with one hundred.
तडागं तं विजानीयात्प्रथमं मानमीरितम्
One should know that pond as the first measure that has been declared.
कनिष्ठं त्रिशतं चैव प्रस्थे स्याद्विंशहीनकम्
The inferior measure is three hundred, lacking twenty in the prastha.
तडागमानं विज्ञेयं त्रिवर्गफलदायकम्
The measurement of a reservoir is to be understood as bestowing the fruits of the three aims of life.
तडागे द्विगुणा नेमी मानार्धे गर्तमीरितम् 2.1.9.
In a reservoir, the circumference is twice the diameter, and the depth is said to be half the measurement.
