तत्संग्रहेपि कविना नियोक्तव्यः स एव हि
In the compilation of these, it is he alone who should be appointed by the poet.
तत्तदक्षरसख्यानां ब्रह्मलोकान्न तच्च्युतिः
By reciting the names of those syllables, there is no fall from the world of Brahman.
मोहात्कृत्वा होमधेनुं दत्त्वा शुद्धिर्भविष्यति
Having performed, out of delusion, the homa with a cow as offering, and having given, purification will result.
कलौ यः संग्रहं कुर्यात्प्रसुप्ते चैव केशवे ।। 2.1.8.
In the age of Kali, whoever makes a compilation while Keshava is asleep—
यावत्प्रवर्तते लोकस्तावत्स्वर्गे महीयते
As long as the world continues, so long is one honored in heaven.
प्रातःकाले न कुर्वीत् तथा मध्यंदिने द्विजाः
One should not perform it in the morning, nor at midday, O twice-born ones.
मलमासे विशेषेण सन्ध्ययोश्च विवर्जने
Especially in an impure month, and when the twilights are omitted,
पूतं स्यात्तत्क्षणाद्विप्राश्चतुः पंचाक्षरेण वा
It becomes purified at that very moment, O Brāhmaṇas, even with four or five syllables.
मायाविभवविन्यस्ते महापापकलेवरे
When the body is established in great sin by the power of illusion,
स्त्रियो वा निंदितो वापि म्लेच्छो याति परां गतिम् स गर्दभीं खरीं योनिं प्रविशेन्नात्र संशयः
Whether women or one who is reviled, or a foreigner, attains the highest state; he enters the womb of a she-ass or a she-mule, of this there is no doubt.
एकमेवात्मकं ब्रह्म तत्प्रकृत्यात्मकं द्वयम्
Brahman is indeed one, of the nature of the self; by its own nature, it is twofold.
रुद्र एकादशश्चैव अर्कार्कश्चापि द्वादशः
There are eleven Rudras, and also twelve Suns.
तिथ्यात्मकं पंचदशे षोडशाख्या कलापरा
The fifteenth is of the nature of lunar days, and the sixteenth is called the supreme art.
अष्टादशाक्षरो मंत्रः पुराणात्मक एव च 2.1.8.
The mantra of eighteen syllables is indeed of the essence of the Purāṇas.
ज्योतिर्मयश्चैकविंशो द्वाविंशे केशवार्चनम्
The twenty-first is radiant with light; in the twenty-second, worship of Keśava is prescribed.
पंचविंशे च तीर्थानि षड्विंशे च त्रियंबकः
In the twenty-fifth are the sacred fords, and in the twenty-sixth, the Three-eyed One.
त्रिंशद्योगे शिवः प्रोक्तः पातालमेकत्रिंशके
At the conjunction of thirty, Śiva is declared; in the thirty-first, the netherworld.
पंचत्रिंशे तदंतः स्याच्छते पूर्णे दिवाकरः
In the thirty-fifth, that end is reached; at a full hundred, the Sun.
लक्षे ब्रह्मा तथा कोट्यां देवो नारायणः परः
At a hundred thousand, Brahmā; and at ten million, the supreme god Nārāyaṇa.
शुद्धब्रह्ममयं नित्यं ज्ञानरूपं परं महत् क्षणे ब्रह्ममयं याति इत्याह भगवान्मनुः
Eternally pure, of the nature of Brahman, of knowledge, supreme and great— in a moment, it becomes Brahman, so declares the venerable Manu.
पूर्तनिर्णयवर्णनम् बहिर्वेदं तथैवोक्तं शस्तं स्याद्द्वापरे कलौ
The description of the decision regarding pūrta (meritorious works): Outside the Veda, it is likewise stated, and is praised in the Dvāpara and Kali ages.
ज्ञानसाध्यं तु यत्कर्म अंतर्वेदीति कथ्यते
That action which is accomplished through knowledge is called 'inner Veda.'
प्रपापूर्तादिकं चैव ब्राह्मणानां च तोषणम्
Acts such as the construction of wells and ponds, and the satisfaction of Brāhmaṇas.
अकामेन कृतं कर्म कर्म च व्यसनादिकम्
Action performed without desire, and action arising from misfortune.
धर्मस्य कारणं राजा धर्ममेतद्भवेन्नृपः
The king is the cause of dharma; O king, this is dharma.
सप्ताशीतिर्बहिर्वेदी सारमेषां तृतीयकम्
There are eighty-seven external Vedic rites; the third among the best sheep.
तडागकरणं चैव तृतीयं न चतुर्थकम्
The making of a reservoir is also the third, not the fourth.
अधिवासः प्रतिष्ठा च देवतानामविक्रिया
Consecration and installation, and the unchanging nature of deities.
त्रिविधा सा विनिर्दिष्टा उत्तमा चाथ मध्यमा
It is declared to be threefold: superior, and then middling.
त्रिधा भवति सर्वत्र प्रतिष्ठादिविधिर्मतः 2.1.9.
Everywhere, the rule for installation and the like is considered to be threefold.
