पृथिवीराज एवासौ श्रुत्वा सैन्यमचोदयत्
The king of the earth, upon hearing this, ordered his army.
रथाः पंचसहस्राश्च धनुर्बाणविशारदाः
There were five thousand chariots, all skilled in bows and arrows.
राजानस्त्रिशतान्येव महीराजपदानुगाः
There were three hundred kings, followers of the royal rank.
धुन्धुकारश्च तद्बन्धुर्गजानीकपतिस्सदा
Dhundhukāra, his kinsman, always the commander of the elephant corps.
पदातीनां नृपतयः पतयस्तत्र चाभवन् 3.3.6.
There, the kings were also commanders of the infantry.
विंशत्कोशप्रमाणेन स्थितं तस्य महाबलम्
His great force was stationed at a distance of twenty kos.
स्वसैन्यं कल्पयामास लक्षषोडशसंमितम्
He arranged his own army, numbering sixteen lakhs.
वाजिनश्चाष्टलक्षाश्च सर्वयुद्धविशारदाः
There were eight lakhs of horses, all skilled in every kind of battle.
आगस्कृतं महीराजं मत्वा ते शुक्लवंशिनः
Thinking the king to be an obstacle, those of the Śukla lineage acted.
ईशनद्याः परे कूले तद्दोला स्थपिता तदा
Then, on the far bank of the Īśanā river, that palanquin was placed.
रत्नभानुर्गजानीके रूपानीके हि लक्षणः
Ratnabhānu was the commander of the elephants and the one responsible for their appearance and distinguishing marks.
प्रद्योतश्चैव विद्योतो रत्नभानुं ररक्षतुः
Pradyota and Vidyota both protected Ratnabhānu.
भूपाः पदातिसैन्ये च संस्थिता मदविह्वलाः
The kings, overwhelmed with pride, stood amidst their infantry armies.
हया हयैर्मृता जाता गजाश्चैव गजैस्तथा
Horses were slain by horses, and likewise, elephants were killed by elephants.
भूपैश्च रक्षिताः सर्वे निर्भया रणमाययुः 3.3.6.
All were protected by the kings and, fearless, entered the battle.
एवं पंचदिनं जातं युद्धं वीरजनक्षयम्
Thus, for five days, a battle took place, causing the destruction of heroes.
पंचलक्षं महीभर्तुर्हतास्तत्र पदातयः
There, five hundred thousand foot soldiers of the lord of the earth were slain.
कान्यकुब्जाधिपस्यैव गजा नवसहस्रकाः
Nine thousand elephants of the king of Kānyakubja were killed.
एकलक्षं हयास्तत्र मृताः स्वर्गपुरं ययुः
There, one hundred thousand horses died and went to the city of the gods.
दुःखितो मनसा देवं रुद्रं तुष्टाव भक्तिमान्
Grieved in his heart, the devoted one praised the god Rudra.
प्रसन्नस्तु महीराजो गतः संयोगिनीं प्रति
The king, being pleased, went to meet Saṃyoginī.
संयोगिनी नृपं दृष्ट्वा मूर्च्छिता चाभवत्क्षणात्
Upon seeing the king, Saṃyoginī immediately fainted.
जगाम देहलीं भूपः सर्वसैन्यसमन्वितः
The king, accompanied by his entire army, went to the threshold.
दृष्ट्वा नैव तदा दोलां प्रजग्मुर्वेगवत्तराः
Seeing that the palanquin was not there, they hurried away with great speed.
अर्द्धसैन्यं च संस्थाप्य स्वयं गेहमुपागमत् 3.3.6.
Stationing half the army, he himself went home.
सूकरक्षेत्रमासाद्य युद्धाय समुपस्थितौ
Reaching the Sūkara field, both arrived, prepared for battle.
स्वसैन्यैः सह संप्राप्य महद्युद्धमकारयन्
Having joined with their own armies, they engaged in a great battle.
संकुलश्च महानासीद्दारुणो लोमहर्षणः
A great and tumultuous battle arose, dreadful and hair-raising.
भयभीता परे तत्र ज्ञात्वा रात्रिं तमोवृताम्
Terrified, the others there, realizing the night was shrouded in darkness,
प्रद्योताद्याश्च ते वीरा देहलीं प्रति संययुः
those heroes led by Pradyota approached the threshold.
