यस्माद्विजयते लोकस्तस्माद्धर्मः प्रवर्तते
From whom the world is born, from him righteousness proceeds.
या कुक्षिविवरे कृत्वा स्वयं रक्षति सर्वतः
She who, having placed (the child) in the cavity of her womb, herself protects in every way—
त्वत्प्रसादाज्जगद्दृष्टं मातर्नित्यं नमोऽस्तु ते ।। 2.1.6.
By your grace, O Mother, the world is seen; eternal salutations to you.
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि सागरादीनि सर्वशः
All the sacred places on earth, including the oceans and others,
गुरुदेवप्रसादेन लब्धा विद्या यशस्करी
The knowledge obtained through the favor of the teacher and the gods brings fame.
वेद वेदांगशास्त्राणां तत्त्वं यत्र प्रतिष्ठितम्
The essence of the Vedas, the Vedāngas, and the scriptures is established therein.
ब्राह्मणो जगतां तीर्थं पावनं परमं यतः
The Brāhmaṇa is the supreme purifier and the sacred place of the worlds.
पितामहं च प्रणमेत्सर्वादौ मातरं गुरुम्
One should first bow to the grandmother, the mother, and the teacher.
मातृमंत्रैश्च प्रथमं प्रणमेद्भक्तिभावतः
With maternal mantras, one should first bow with devotion.
दृष्टादृष्टे च स गुरुर्गुरुर्माता तथा गुरुः
Whether visible or invisible, the teacher is the teacher; the mother is also a teacher.
मंत्रदाता गुरुः ख्यातस्सप्तमः परिकीर्तितः
The giver of the mantra is renowned as the seventh teacher.
दृष्टदेवं च यो हित्वा अदृष्टं च निषेवते
He who abandons the visible deity and serves the invisible one,
यथा पिता ज्येष्ठपिता कनीयांश्च तथा द्विजाः 2.1.6.
Just as the father, the elder father, and the younger ones, so are the twice-born.
आचार्यो ब्रह्मणो मूर्तिः पिता मूर्तिः प्रजापतेः
The teacher is the embodiment of Brahmā; the father is the embodiment of Prajāpati.
पिता मेरुर्व शिष्ठः स्याद्धर्ममूर्तिः सनातनः
The father is like Mount Meru, the highest; he is the eternal embodiment of dharma.
पितामहं च पित्रग्रे हव्यकव्यैश्च तर्पयेत्
One should offer oblations to the grandfather before the father, with offerings for ancestors and gods.
तस्य पादोदकस्नानाद्गंगा नार्हति केवलम्
Bathing in the water from his feet surpasses even the Ganges alone.
द्वात्रिं शत्कुंडकशिलास्पर्शने यादृशं फलम्
The result obtained from touching thirty-two sacred stones,
शतमातृवरिष्ठाश्च पितामह्याश्च पोषणे
A hundred mothers of highest excellence and grandmothers in nourishment,
गुरुवर्णनम् श्रवणेपि च धर्मात्मञ्छ्रूयतां यन्मया पुरा
Description of the teacher: Listen to what I once heard concerning dharma.
पृष्टोवोचन्महातेजा विरिंचो भगवान्प्रभुः
When asked, the glorious and mighty Lord Brahmā spoke.
इतिहासपुराणानि श्रुत्वा भक्त्या द्विजोत्तमाः
O best of twice-born, having listened with devotion to the histories and Purāṇas,
सायं प्रातस्तथा रात्रौ शुचिर्भूत्वा शृणोति यः
Whoever, pure in body, hears them in the evening, morning, and at night,
प्रत्यूषे भगवान्ब्रह्मा दिनांते तुष्यते हरिः
At dawn, Lord Brahmā is pleased, and at day's end, Hari is satisfied.
शुक्लवस्त्रधरश्चैव चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरः
Wearing white garments, with cloth, deer skin, and sacred grass above,
दिक्पतिभ्यो नमस्कृत्य ऊँकाराधिष्ठितानपि
Having bowed to the guardians of the directions, and also to those presided over by the syllable 'ū',
पुस्तकं धर्मशास्त्रस्य धर्माधिष्ठानशाश्वतम्
He should place the eternal scripture of dharma, the foundation of righteousness,
जामलानां गणपतिर्डामराणां शतक्रतुः
Among the Jāmalas, Gaṇapati; among the Ḍāmaras, Indra of a hundred sacrifices;
आदित्यो वासुदेवश्च माधवो रामकेशवौ ।। 2.1.7.
Among the Ādityas, Vāsudeva; Mādhava and Rāmakeśava as well.
वनमाली महादेवः सप्तानां सप्तपर्वसु अथ चादिपुराणस्य विरिंचिः परिकीर्तितः
Vanamālī, the great god, is among the seven in the seven divisions; and Brahmā is declared the originator of the Purāṇa.
