दैवेन च विहीनो यः कुसंभाषां वदेत्तु यः 2.1.5.
He who is deprived by fate, or who speaks harsh words—
चांडालैः सह आलापः पक्षिणां पोषणे रतः
Who converses with outcastes, or is devoted to feeding birds—
तृणच्छेदी लोष्टमदी वृथा मांसाशनश्च यः
Who cuts grass, delights in clods, or eats meat uselessly—
नित्यक्रिया अकुर्वाणो नित्यं स च मलीमसः
Who does not perform daily duties is always impure.
अन्यायेन गृहं विंदेदन्यायेन गृहान्धनम्
Who acquires a house or wealth by unjust means—
देवपुस्तकरत्नानि मणिमुक्ताश्वमेव च
Divine books, jewels, pearls, and even horses—
अन्योन्यभावना कार्या स स्तेयी यो न भावयेत्
Mutual goodwill should be cultivated; he who does not is considered a thief.
गुरोः प्रसादाज्जयति पित्रोश्चापि प्रसादतः
One attains victory by the grace of the teacher and also by the grace of the father.
न पोषयति दुष्टात्मा स स्तेयी चापरः स्मृतः
He who does not support the wicked-minded is also called a thief.
उपकारिजनं प्राप्य न करोति परिष्क्रियाम्
Having met a benefactor, if one does not render service—
सर्वेषां च सवर्णानां धर्मतो ब्राह्मणः प्रभुः 2.1.5.
By righteousness, the brāhmaṇa is lord over all the classes.
प्रजापतेर्मुखोद्भूतो होरातंत्रे यथोदितम्
Born from the mouth of Prajāpati, as stated in the Horā Tantra—
गंगाहीनो हतो देशो विप्रहीना यथा क्रिया
A land without the Gaṅgā is ruined, just as a ritual is ruined without a brāhmaṇa.
अप्रदीपा यथा रात्रिरनादित्यं यथा नभः
Like night without a lamp, or the sky without the sun.
स्थापयेद्धर्मतो विप्रं भावयेत्कर्मवृद्धये
One should appoint a Brahmin in accordance with righteousness and contemplate for the increase of meritorious deeds.
प्रत्यक्प्रदर्शनात्पुण्यं त्रिदिनं कल्मषापहम्
By direct demonstration, merit is gained, and for three days, sins are removed.
न व्रात्यत्वं सूर्यविप्रे पूजयेद्यज्ञसिद्धये
There is no outcaste status for the solar Brahmin; he should be worshipped for the accomplishment of sacrifices.
जातिभेदाश्च चत्वारो भोजकः कथकस्तथा
There are four distinctions of caste: the server, the narrator, and likewise—
कथको मध्यमस्तेषां सूर्यविप्रस्तथोत्तमः
Among them, the narrator is of middle rank, and the solar Brahmin is the highest.
सूर्यविप्रस्य विप्रस्य वैद्यस्य च नृपस्य च अवध्यः सर्वलोकेषु राजा राज्येन पालयेत्
The solar Brahmin, the Brahmin, the physician, and the king—these are inviolable among all people; the king should protect them with his sovereignty.
वसुभिर्वस्त्रगंधाद्यैर्माल्यैश्च विविधैरपि 2.1.5.
With wealth, garments, fragrances, and also with various garlands—
सूर्यचक्रविदः पूज्या नावमन्येत्कथंचन गणविप्रसमः पूज्यो दैवज्ञः समुदाहृतः
Those who know the solar wheel are to be honored; one should never disdain them in any way. The astrologer is declared to be worthy of honor, equal to the group of Brahmins.
जाते बाले निरूप्ये च लग्नग्रहनिरूपणम् द्विमात्रिकां समभ्यस्य सर्ववेदफलं लभेत्
When a child is born or examined, and the ascendant and planetary positions are determined, by practicing the two-measure (dvimātrikā) one obtains the fruit of all the Vedas.
गुरुवर्णनम् ऋते पितुर्द्विजश्रेष्ठा इतीयं नैगमी स्मृतिः
Except for the father, O best of twice-born, this is the traditional teaching of the Nigamas.
त्रयोऽपि गुरवः श्रेष्ठास्ताभ्यां माता परो गुरुः
All three are excellent teachers, but among them, the mother is the supreme teacher.
द्वादश्यां तु आमवास्यामथ वा रविसंक्रमे
On the twelfth day, on the new moon, or at the solar transition—
अयने विषुवे चैव चंद्रसूर्यग्रहे तथा
At the solstice, at the equinox, and likewise during lunar or solar eclipses—
पश्चात्प्रवंदयेत्पादौ मंत्रेणानेन सत्तमाः
Afterwards, the feet should be reverently bowed to by the best ones, with this mantra.
स्वर्गापवर्गप्रदमेकमाद्यं ब्रह्मस्वरूपं पितरं नमामि
I bow to the father, the first, the embodiment of Brahman, who grants heaven and liberation.
पितरो जनयंतीह पितरः पालयंति च
Fathers beget here, and fathers also protect.
