साध्वाचारं च प्रच्छाय सेवनं चापि दर्शयेत् 2.1.5.
One should display good conduct and also show respect by serving in the proper manner.
जीवेद्देवलवृत्तिर्यः भार्याविपणजीवकः
He who lives by the livelihood of temple service or by trading his wife.
षडेव नष्टाः शास्त्रे च न स्वर्गमोक्षभागिनः
These six are lost according to scripture and do not attain heaven or liberation.
भ्रुकुटीकुटिलः क्रुद्धो रुष्टः पंचविधोदितः
One who is frowning, crooked, angry, and described as having five kinds of wrath.
निद्रालुर्व्यसनासक्तो मद्यपः स्र्त्रीनिषेवकः
One who is addicted to sleep, attached to vices, a drunkard, and a frequenter of women.
एकाकी मिष्टमश्नाति वंचकः साधुनिंदकः
One who eats sweet food alone, is deceitful, and slanders the virtuous.
निगमागमतंत्राणि नाध्यापयति यो द्विजः
A twice-born who does not teach the Vedas, Āgamas, and Tantras.
श्रुतिः स्मृतिश्च विप्राणां नयने द्वे विनिर्मिते
The Veda and the Smṛti are the two eyes created for the Brāhmaṇas.
विवादः सोदरैः सार्द्धं पित्रोरप्रियकृद्वदेत्
One who quarrels with brothers and speaks words displeasing to parents.
पिशुनो राजगामी च शूद्रसेवक एव च
A tale-bearer, one who goes to the king, and one who serves a Śūdra.
पक्वान्नं शूद्रगेहे च यो भुंक्ते सकृदेव वा ।। 2.1.5.
Whoever eats cooked food even once in the house of a Śūdra.
अष्टकुष्ठान्वितः कुष्ठी त्रिकुष्ठी शास्त्रनिन्दितः
One afflicted with eight kinds of leprosy, a leper, one with three types of leprosy, condemned by the scriptures.
कीटवद्भ्रमणं यस्य कुव्यापारी कुपंडितः
One whose wandering is like that of an insect, who engages in wrongful trade, and is a false scholar.
अविमुक्तं परित्यज्य योऽन्यदेशे वसेच्चिरम्
Whoever abandons Avimukta and dwells for a long time in another land.
कपोलेन हि संयुक्तो भ्रुकुटीकुटिलाननः
One who is marked by a swollen cheek and a face twisted in a frown.
ब्रह्मस्वहरणं कृत्वा नृपदेव स्वमेव च
One who steals Brahmin property, or that belonging to the king or the gods, or his own.
संतर्पयति योऽश्नाति यः प्रयच्छति वा क्वचित्
Whoever eats or gives food at any time, satisfies others.
अक्षराभ्यासनिरतः पठत्येव न बुध्यते
One who is devoted only to reciting letters, merely reads but does not understand.
वदत्यन्यत्करोत्यन्यद्गुरुदेवाग्रतो यतः
He speaks one thing and does another, even in the presence of the teacher and the gods.
षड्गुणालंकृतेः साधोर्दोषान्मृगयते खलः
The wicked person seeks faults even in the virtuous who are adorned with six qualities.
दैवेन च विहीनो यः कुसंभाषां वदेत्तु यः 2.1.5.
He who is deprived by fate, or who speaks harsh words—
चांडालैः सह आलापः पक्षिणां पोषणे रतः
Who converses with outcastes, or is devoted to feeding birds—
तृणच्छेदी लोष्टमदी वृथा मांसाशनश्च यः
Who cuts grass, delights in clods, or eats meat uselessly—
नित्यक्रिया अकुर्वाणो नित्यं स च मलीमसः
Who does not perform daily duties is always impure.
अन्यायेन गृहं विंदेदन्यायेन गृहान्धनम्
Who acquires a house or wealth by unjust means—
देवपुस्तकरत्नानि मणिमुक्ताश्वमेव च
Divine books, jewels, pearls, and even horses—
अन्योन्यभावना कार्या स स्तेयी यो न भावयेत्
Mutual goodwill should be cultivated; he who does not is considered a thief.
गुरोः प्रसादाज्जयति पित्रोश्चापि प्रसादतः
One attains victory by the grace of the teacher and also by the grace of the father.
न पोषयति दुष्टात्मा स स्तेयी चापरः स्मृतः
He who does not support the wicked-minded is also called a thief.
उपकारिजनं प्राप्य न करोति परिष्क्रियाम्
Having met a benefactor, if one does not render service—
