पशुश्चतुर्विधश्चैव कृपणोपि हि वै द्विधा 2.1.5.
The animal is of four kinds, and the miser is indeed of two types.
कष्टः स्यात्पञ्चधा ज्ञेयो रुष्टोपि स्याद्द्विधा द्द्विजाः ।। दुष्टः स्यात्षड्विधो ज्ञेयः पुष्टश्चैव भवेद्द्विधा
The harsh person is known to be of five kinds; the angry one is of two types, O twice-born. The wicked is recognized as sixfold, and the nourished is of two kinds.
हृष्टश्चाष्टविधः प्रोक्तः कुण्ठश्चैव त्रिधोदितः
The delighted is described as eightfold, and the dull is declared as threefold.
द्वौ चण्डौ चपलश्चैकावण्डचण्डो द्विगुर्भवेत्
There are two fierce ones, and the restless is single; the blind-fierce is twofold.
वाचालश्च कदर्यश्च क्रमात्त्रिभिरुदाहृतः
The talkative and the miserly are successively described as threefold.
द्वावेकौ चतुरश्चैव स्तेयी चैकविधो भवेत्
Two are single, and fourfold as well; the thief is of one kind.
सम्यग्यस्य परिज्ञानं नरो देवत्वमाप्नुयात्
A man who has perfect discernment attains divinity.
उच्चासनं गुरोरग्रे तीर्थयात्रां करोति यः
Whoever sits on a high seat before the teacher or undertakes a pilgrimage to holy places—
निमज्ज्य तीर्थे विधिवद्ग्राम्यधर्मेण वर्तयन्
Having immersed in the sacred place according to the prescribed manner, behaving according to worldly customs—
वाचैव मधुरा श्लक्ष्णा हृदि हालाहलं विषम्
Though the speech is sweet and gentle, in the heart there is poison like halahala.
मोक्षचिन्तामतिक्रम्य योऽन्यचिन्तापरिश्रमः 2.1.5.
Whoever, neglecting thoughts of liberation, labors in other concerns—
प्रयागे विद्यमानेऽपि योऽन्यत्र स्नानमाचरेत्
Even when Prayaga is present, whoever bathes elsewhere—
आयुषस्तु क्षयार्थाय शास्त्रेयमृषिसंमतः
This is for the decrease of lifespan, as taught by scripture and approved by sages.
बहूनि पुस्तकानीह शास्त्राणि विविधानि च
Here, there are many books and various scriptures.
बलेन च्छलछद्मेन उपायेन प्रबंधनम्
By force, by deception, by means, and by arrangement.
मधुरान्नं प्रतिष्ठाप्य दैवे पित्र्ये च कर्मणि
Establishing sweet food in both divine and ancestral rites—
कृपणः स तु विज्ञेयो न स्वर्गी न च मोक्षभाक्
He should be known as a miser; he attains neither heaven nor liberation.
स एव कृपणः ख्यातः सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृतः
That same miser is renowned, excluded from all dharmas.
पितृमातृगुरुत्यागी शौचाचारविवर्जितः
One who abandons father, mother, and teacher, and is devoid of purity and proper conduct.
जीवत्पितृपरित्यक्तं सुतं सेवन्न वा क्वचित्
One who, while his parents are alive, neglects his son, whether by serving him or not, at any time.
साध्वाचारं च प्रच्छाय सेवनं चापि दर्शयेत् 2.1.5.
One should display good conduct and also show respect by serving in the proper manner.
जीवेद्देवलवृत्तिर्यः भार्याविपणजीवकः
He who lives by the livelihood of temple service or by trading his wife.
षडेव नष्टाः शास्त्रे च न स्वर्गमोक्षभागिनः
These six are lost according to scripture and do not attain heaven or liberation.
भ्रुकुटीकुटिलः क्रुद्धो रुष्टः पंचविधोदितः
One who is frowning, crooked, angry, and described as having five kinds of wrath.
निद्रालुर्व्यसनासक्तो मद्यपः स्र्त्रीनिषेवकः
One who is addicted to sleep, attached to vices, a drunkard, and a frequenter of women.
एकाकी मिष्टमश्नाति वंचकः साधुनिंदकः
One who eats sweet food alone, is deceitful, and slanders the virtuous.
निगमागमतंत्राणि नाध्यापयति यो द्विजः
A twice-born who does not teach the Vedas, Āgamas, and Tantras.
श्रुतिः स्मृतिश्च विप्राणां नयने द्वे विनिर्मिते
The Veda and the Smṛti are the two eyes created for the Brāhmaṇas.
विवादः सोदरैः सार्द्धं पित्रोरप्रियकृद्वदेत्
One who quarrels with brothers and speaks words displeasing to parents.
पिशुनो राजगामी च शूद्रसेवक एव च
A tale-bearer, one who goes to the king, and one who serves a Śūdra.
