यदा निराकृता धूर्ता मया ते चंद्रवंशिनः
'When those Chandravamshis were rejected by me, being deceitful—'
त्वया षोडशलक्षं च युद्धसैन्यं समाहृतम्
'You assembled a war-army of one hundred and sixty thousand.'
भवान्न दंड्यो बलवान्करं मे दातुमर्हति
'You are not to be punished, being powerful; you ought to pay me tribute.'
इति ज्ञात्वा तयोर्घोरं वैरं चासीन्महीतले
Knowing thus, a fierce enmity arose between the two on the earth.
जयचंद्रश्च बलवान्पृथिवीराजभीरुकः
Jayachandra was powerful, but Prithviraja was fearful.
पृथिवीराज एवासौ तथार्द्धं राष्ट्रमानयत्
That same Prithviraja then took half the kingdom.
दिशं याम्यां स वै जित्वा तेषां कोशानुपाहरत्
Having conquered the southern direction, he seized their treasures.
महीराजस्तु तच्छुत्वा परं विस्मयमागतः
Hearing this, the king was greatly astonished.
तिलका नाम विख्याता या तु वीरवती शुभा
There was a renowned woman named Tilaka, who was brave and auspicious.
जयचंद्रस्य भूपस्य योषितः षोडशाभवन्
King Jayachandra had sixteen wives.
गौडभूपस्य दुहिता नाम्ना दिव्यविभावरी
The daughter of the king of Gauda was named Divyavibhavari.
रूपयौवन संयुक्ता रतिकेलिविशारदा
She was endowed with beauty and youth, and skilled in the arts of love.
तस्यां जाता सुता देवी नाम्ना संयोगिनी शुभा
A daughter was born to her, the auspicious goddess named Saṃyoginī.
तस्याः स्वयंवरे राजाह्वयद्भूपान्महाशुभान् मंत्रिप्रवर भो मित्र चंद्रभट्ट मम प्रिय
At her svayaṃvara, the king invited the most noble kings, the chief minister, O friend, and Candrabhaṭṭa, my beloved.
कान्यकुब्जपुरीं प्राप्य मन्मूर्तिं स्वर्णनिर्मिताम् स्थापय त्वं सभामध्ये यद्वृत्तांतं तु मे वद ।। 3.3.6.
Arriving at Kānyakubja city, place my golden image in the midst of the assembly and tell me what transpired.
इति श्रुत्वा चंद्रभट्टो भवानीभक्तितत्परः
Hearing this, Candrabhaṭṭa, devoted to Bhavānī, became intent.
स्वयंवरे च भूपाश्च नानादेश्याः समागताः
At the svayaṃvara, kings from various regions gathered together.
पितरं प्राह कामाक्षी यस्य मूर्तिरियं नृप
Kāmākṣī spoke to her father, whose image this is, O king.
जयचंद्रस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा चंद्रभद्रमुवाच तम्
Hearing this, Jayacandra spoke to Candrabhadra.
सञ्जयेद्योगिनीमेतां तर्हि मेऽतिप्रियो भवेत्
If this Yoginī is united, then she will be exceedingly dear to me.
पृथिवीराज एवासौ श्रुत्वा सैन्यमचोदयत्
The king of the earth, upon hearing this, ordered his army.
रथाः पंचसहस्राश्च धनुर्बाणविशारदाः
There were five thousand chariots, all skilled in bows and arrows.
राजानस्त्रिशतान्येव महीराजपदानुगाः
There were three hundred kings, followers of the royal rank.
धुन्धुकारश्च तद्बन्धुर्गजानीकपतिस्सदा
Dhundhukāra, his kinsman, always the commander of the elephant corps.
पदातीनां नृपतयः पतयस्तत्र चाभवन् 3.3.6.
There, the kings were also commanders of the infantry.
विंशत्कोशप्रमाणेन स्थितं तस्य महाबलम्
His great force was stationed at a distance of twenty kos.
स्वसैन्यं कल्पयामास लक्षषोडशसंमितम्

वाजिनश्चाष्टलक्षाश्च सर्वयुद्धविशारदाः
There were eight lakhs of horses, all skilled in every kind of battle.
आगस्कृतं महीराजं मत्वा ते शुक्लवंशिनः
Thinking the king to be an obstacle, those of the Śukla lineage acted.
ईशनद्याः परे कूले तद्दोला स्थपिता तदा
Then, on the far bank of the Īśanā river, that palanquin was placed.
