मेरोश्चतुर्दिशस्तत्र नवसाहस्रविष्कृतम्
On the four sides of Meru there, each is spread over nine thousand.
विष्कंभा रचिता मेरोर्योजनायुतमुच्छ्रिताः
The buttresses of Meru are constructed, rising to ten thousand yojanas.
विपुलः पश्चिमे भागे सुपार्श्वश्चोत्तरे स्थितः
Vipula stands in the western part, and Supārśva is situated in the north.
जंबूद्वीपस्य सा जंबूर्नामहेतोर्महर्षयः
The sages say that Jambūdvīpa is so named because of the Jambū tree.
पतंति भूभृतः पृष्ठे शीर्यमाणानि सर्वशः
Mountains fall upon its back, all decaying away.
सरित्तु वर्तते सापि पीयते तत्र वासिभिः उत्पन्नाः स्वच्छमनसो नरास्तत्र भवन्ति वै
A river flows there, drunk by the inhabitants; people born there are pure in mind.
तीरसूत्रं समं प्राप्य वायुना च विशोषितम् 2.1.4.
Having reached the even shore-line, dried up by the wind.
भद्राश्वः पार्श्वतो मेरोः केतुमालश्च पश्चिमे
To the side of Meru is Bhadrāśva, and Ketumāla is to the west.
मेरोरुपरि विप्रेंद्रा ब्रह्मणः स्थानमुत्तमम्
Above Meru, O best of Brahmins, is the supreme abode of Brahmā.
तदूर्ध्वं वैष्णवो लोको दुगार्लोकस्तदूर्ध्वतः
Above that is the world of Viṣṇu, and above that is the world of Durgā.
भक्तस्थानं तदूर्ध्वं च देवो हि भगवान्रविः राशिचक्रे च भ्रमति मेरोरुपरि सत्तमाः
Above that is the place of devotees, and there the god, the blessed Sun, moves within the zodiac above Meru, O excellent ones.
. बिंबषट्केद्रिनाभौ च रथचक्रं दिवानिशम्
In the navel of the six-spoked disc, the chariot-wheel moves day and night.
दिक्पालाद्या ग्रहास्तत्र दक्षिणादुत्तरायणम्
There are the guardians of the directions and the planets, from the south to the northward path.
रविणा लंघितो मासश्चांद्रः ख्यातो मलिम्लुचः
The month called Mālimluca is surpassed by the Sun and is known as the lunar month.
कृत्वा त्रिषु त्वहोरात्रं तारामयगतं विभुम्
Having made three day-and-night cycles, the all-pervading one goes to the path of the stars.
दिवा चरति यः सूर्यो रात्रौ चरति चन्द्रमाः
The Sun moves by day, and the Moon moves by night.
देशान्नं चावगमनं यत्र तस्मादिवाभवत् 2.1.4.
Where there is the coming and going of regions and food, from there day arises.
रात्रिंदिवं विजानीयाज्ज्योतिश्चक्रे प्रतिष्ठितम्
One should know day and night as established in the circle of light.
यन्नक्षत्रे च यो देशः स तेषामुदयः स्मृतः
The region in which a constellation is found is considered its rising place.
तदा काले नियोक्तव्या भार्गवास्तादिकी क्रिया
At that time, the ritual of Bhārgava and others should be performed according to direction.
दक्षिणायनमास्थाय यदा चरति रश्मिमान्
When the radiant one moves, having entered the southern course,
विस्तीर्णमंडलं कृत्वा तस्योर्ध्वे चरते शशी
Having made a wide circle, above that the Moon moves.
नक्षत्रेभ्यो बुधश्चोर्ध्वं बुधादूर्ध्वं तु भार्गवः
Above the constellations is Mercury, and above Mercury is Venus.
तस्माच्छनैश्चरादूर्ध्वं ततः सप्तर्षिमंडलम्
Therefore, above Saturn is the constellation of the Seven Sages.
कालचक्रमये चक्रे सूर्यो भवति सर्वदा
The sun always exists within the wheel of time.
स्तंभते चरते शीघ्रं ह्रासे चापि दिनक्षयः
It stands still, moves swiftly, and diminishes as the day wanes.
पादास्ते पक्षमात्रं स्यान्महास्ते याममात्रकम् 2.1.4.
Its feet measure half a lunar fortnight; its great hands measure the span of a watch.
न गण्यते देशभेदे नक्षत्रेण च गण्यते
It is not counted by regional difference, but is reckoned by the constellation.
बाल्यवार्द्ध्ये क्षत्रियस्य न गण्येते सदा बुधैः
In childhood and old age of a Kshatriya, it is never counted by the wise.
शेषार्धं भार्गवास्तस्य शूद्राणामथ गर्हितम्
Half of the remainder belongs to the Bhargavas; for the Shudras, it is condemned.
