रसातलमिति ख्यातं सर्वशोभासमन्वितम् 2.1.3.
Rasātala is known as such, endowed with all splendor.
शंकुकर्णेन संभिन्नं तथा नमुचिपूर्वकम्
Broken by Śaṃkukarṇa, and preceded by Namuci.
तेषामधस्तान्नरका रौरवाद्याश्च कोटयः
Below them are the hells, countless, beginning with Raurava.
पाताला नामधश्चांते शेषाख्या वैष्णवी तनुः
At the end below are the Pātālas, named, and the Vaiṣṇava body called Śeṣa.
योऽनंतः पठ्यते देवो नागरूपी जनार्दनः
He who is called Ananta, the god Janārdana in serpent form.
तमाविश्य महायोगी कालस्तद्वदनानलः
Entering him, the great yogi, Time, and likewise the fire of speech.
तामसी शांभवी मूर्तिः कालात्मा परमेश्वरः
The dark Śāṃbhava form, the essence of Time, the Supreme Lord.
ज्योतिश्चक्रवर्णनम् अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि भूर्लोकस्य विनिर्णयम्
Description of the wheel of light. Now I shall declare the determination of the world of Bhūḥ.
तद्द्वीपप्रधानो जंबूः प्लक्षः शाल्मल एव च
Among those continents, Jambū is foremost, along with Plakṣa and Śālmalā.
एते सप्त महाद्वीपाः समुद्रैः सप्तभिर्वृताः
These are the seven great continents, encircled by seven oceans.
क्षीरोदेक्षुरसोदोऽथ क्षारोदश्च घृतोदकः
The oceans are of milk, sugarcane juice, then brine, and also clarified butter.
पंचाशत्कोटिविस्तीर्णा समुद्रवलया स्मृता
The oceanic rings are each said to be fifty crores in breadth.
जंबूद्वीपः समस्तानां द्वीपानां मध्यतः शुभः
Jambūdvīpa is auspicious and lies at the center of all the continents.
चतुराशीतिसाहस्रयोजनैरस्य चोच्छ्रयः
Its height is eighty-four thousand yojanas.
मूले षोडशसाहस्रं विस्तारस्तस्य सर्वतः
At its base, its width on all sides is sixteen thousand.
हिमवान्हिमकूटश्च निषधस्त स्य दक्षिणे
Himavān and Himakūṭa, and Niṣadha are on its southern side.
लक्षप्रमाणौ द्वौ मध्ये दशहीनास्तथापरे ।।2.1.4.
Two of them are each a hundred thousand in measure, and the others are ten less.
भारतं दक्षिणं वर्षं ततः किंपुरुषं स्मृतम्
Bhārata is the southern region, and then Kiṃpuruṣa is remembered.
चंपकं चोत्तरं वर्षं तथैवाश्वहिरण्मयम्
Campaka is the northern region, as well as Aśvahiraṇmaya.
नवसाहस्रमेकैकमेतेषां द्विजसत्तमाः
Each of these, O best of twice-born, is nine thousand in extent.
मेरोश्चतुर्दिशस्तत्र नवसाहस्रविष्कृतम्
On the four sides of Meru there, each is spread over nine thousand.
विष्कंभा रचिता मेरोर्योजनायुतमुच्छ्रिताः
The buttresses of Meru are constructed, rising to ten thousand yojanas.
विपुलः पश्चिमे भागे सुपार्श्वश्चोत्तरे स्थितः
Vipula stands in the western part, and Supārśva is situated in the north.
जंबूद्वीपस्य सा जंबूर्नामहेतोर्महर्षयः
The sages say that Jambūdvīpa is so named because of the Jambū tree.
पतंति भूभृतः पृष्ठे शीर्यमाणानि सर्वशः
Mountains fall upon its back, all decaying away.
सरित्तु वर्तते सापि पीयते तत्र वासिभिः उत्पन्नाः स्वच्छमनसो नरास्तत्र भवन्ति वै
A river flows there, drunk by the inhabitants; people born there are pure in mind.
तीरसूत्रं समं प्राप्य वायुना च विशोषितम् 2.1.4.
Having reached the even shore-line, dried up by the wind.
भद्राश्वः पार्श्वतो मेरोः केतुमालश्च पश्चिमे
To the side of Meru is Bhadrāśva, and Ketumāla is to the west.
मेरोरुपरि विप्रेंद्रा ब्रह्मणः स्थानमुत्तमम्
Above Meru, O best of Brahmins, is the supreme abode of Brahmā.
तदूर्ध्वं वैष्णवो लोको दुगार्लोकस्तदूर्ध्वतः
Above that is the world of Viṣṇu, and above that is the world of Durgā.
