ते भूय ऊचुः प्रमथास्तमेवमत्रैव तिष्ठस्व रवेः पुरस्तात्
Again, the Pramathas said to him: 'Thus, remain here itself, in front of the Sun.'
इत्येवमुक्तः प्रमथैस्तु रुद्रस्तत्रैव तस्थौ रवितोषणाय
Thus addressed by the Pramathas, Rudra remained there itself to please the Sun.
उक्तः स तुष्टेन ततः सवित्रा प्रीतोस्मि देवागमनात्तवाहम्
He was addressed by Savitṛ, who was pleased, saying: 'I am delighted by your arrival among the gods.'
अष्टादशैते प्रमथास्तु भानोश्चतुर्दशान्ये तु रवे रथस्थाः
These eighteen Pramathas belong to Bhānu, and fourteen others are stationed in the chariot of Ravi.
यक्षौ च सिद्धौ च निशाचरौ चादित्यात्मजावप्सरसां प्रधानौ 1.124.
Among Yakṣas and Siddhas, and among night-wandering beings, there are two sons of Āditya, who are chief among the Apsarases.
इत्यादिदेवप्रवरास्तु सर्वे धात्वर्थशब्दैश्च भवंति सिद्धाः
Thus, all these foremost gods become accomplished by words signifying the meaning of dhātu.
यतश्च कौतुकं ब्रह्मन्नस्माकमिह जायते
Therefore, O Brahman, curiosity arises among us here.
ब्रह्मोवाच भूयस्तव प्रवक्ष्यामि दंडनायकपिंगलौ
Brahma said: I will further tell you about Daṇḍanāyaka and Piṅgala.
मया सह समागम्य पुरा देवैर्विचारितम्
In ancient times, together with me, the gods deliberated.
ते तु लब्धवरा भूत्वा अमात्याद्या ह्यभीक्ष्णशः
Having received boons, those ministers and others repeatedly became powerful.
तस्मात्तेषां विघातार्थं प्रवराश्च भवामहे
Therefore, for the purpose of obstructing them, we became the foremost ones.
संमंत्र्यैवं ततः स्कंदो वामपार्श्वे रवेः स्थितः
After deliberating thus, Skanda stood at the left side of Ravi.
उक्तश्च स तदार्केण त्वं प्रजादंडनायकः
He was then addressed by Arka: 'You are the chief enforcer of punishment among the people.'
लिखते यः प्रजानां च सुकृतं यच्च दुष्कृतम्
He records the good and the bad deeds of the people.
आश्विनौ चापि सूर्यस्य पार्श्वयोरुभयोः स्थितौ 1.124.
The two Ashvins also stand on both sides of Sūrya.
द्वारपालौ स्मृतौ तस्य राज्ञः श्रेष्ठौ महाबलौ
They are remembered as the two mighty gatekeepers of that king.
राजृदीप्तौ स्मृतो धातुर्नकारस्तस्य प्रत्ययः तस्मात्स कार्तिकेयस्तु नाम्ना राज्ञ इति स्मृतः
The king is remembered as radiant; the dhātu 'na' is his affix. Therefore, Kārtikeya is remembered by the name 'king.'
स्रु गतौ च स्मृतो धातुर्यस्य स प्रत्ययः स्मृतः
The dhātu 'sru' signifies movement, and its affix is remembered.
प्रथमं यद्भवेद्द्वारं धर्मार्थाभ्यां समाश्रितम्
The first gate is established for dharma and artha.
द्वितीयायां तु कक्षायामप्रधृष्टौ व्यवस्थितौ
At the second enclosure, two unassailable ones are stationed.
वर्णस्य शबलत्वाच्च यमः कल्माष उच्यते
Because of the mottled nature of his color, Yama is called 'Kalmāṣa'.
स्थितो दक्षिणत तस्य दंडहस्तसमन्वितः
He stands to the south, holding a staff in his hand.
कुबेरो धनदो ज्ञेयो हस्तिरूपो विनायकः कुबेरः कुशरीरत्वात्स नाम्ना धनदः स्मृतः
Kubera, known as the giver of wealth, is recognized as having the form of an elephant; Kubera, due to his coarse body, is remembered by the name 'Dhanada'.
नायकः सर्वसत्त्वानां तेन नायक उच्यते
He is the leader of all beings, and thus is called 'Nayaka'.
रैवतश्चैव दिंडिश्च तौ रवेः पूर्वतः स्थितौ 1.124.
Raivata and Diṃḍi are both positioned to the east of the Sun.
प्लुतं गच्छत्यसौ यस्मात्सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः
Because he moves swiftly, he is honored by all worlds.
डीङ्गतावस्य वै धातोर्दिंडिशब्दो निपात्यते
Due to the peculiar state of the root, the word 'Diṃḍi' is applied.
इत्येते प्रवराः प्रोक्ता धात्वर्था नैगमैः शुभैः
Thus, these distinguished ones have been described, their meanings derived from auspicious Vedic sources.
अश्विनौ तौ ततो ज्ञेयौ दंडनायकपिंगलौ
After them, the two Ashvins are to be known as Daṃḍanāyaka and Piṃgala.
रेवतश्चैव दिंडिश्च इत्येते प्रवरा मया
Raivata and Diṃḍi—these distinguished ones have been described by me.
