वराहकर्णीं गजपिप्पलीं च गांधारिकां पिप्पलदेवदारु
Varahakarni, Gajapippali, Gandharika, Pippala, and Devadaru.
लक्षणं सर्वैनागानां रूपवर्णौ विषं तथा ॥ 1.36.
The mark, form, color, and poison of all serpents.
तस्मात्संपूजयेन्नागान्सदा भक्त्या समन्वितः
Therefore, one should always worship the serpents with devotion.
श्रावणे मासि पंचम्यां शुक्लपक्षे नरा धिप । द्वारस्योभयतो लेख्या गोमयेन विषोल्बणाः
In the month of Shravana, on the fifth day of the bright fortnight, men should draw fierce serpents on both sides of the doorway with cow dung.
पूजयेद्विधिवद्द्वारं दधिदूर्वाक्षतैः कुशैः । गंधपुष्पोपहारैश्च ब्राह्मणानां च तर्पणैः
One should properly worship the doorway with curds, durva grass, rice grains, kusha grass, fragrant substances, flowers, offerings, and by satisfying Brahmins.
ये त्वस्यां पूजंतीह नागान्भक्तिपुरःसराः।। न तेषां सर्वपतो वीर भयं भवति कर्हिचित्
Those who, with devotion, worship the Nagas here—O hero—never have fear from any direction at any time.
अथालेख्य नरो नागान्कृष्णवर्णादिवर्णकैः
Now, a man should draw Nagas using black and other colors.
पूजयेद्गंधपुष्पैश्च सर्पिः पायसगुग्गुलैः
He should worship them with fragrant substances, flowers, ghee, sweet rice, and guggul incense.
आसप्तमात्कुलात्तस्य न भयं नागतो भवेत्
For seven generations in his lineage, there will be no fear from Nagas.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे शतर्द्धसाहस्र्यां संहितायां ब्राह्मे पर्वणि पंचमीकल्पे भाद्रपदिकनागपञ्चमीव्रतवर्णनं नाम सप्तत्रिंशोध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Brahma Parva, in the section on the fifth day, is the thirty-seventh chapter named 'Description of the Bhadrapada Naga Panchami Vow.'
सुमंतुरुवाच तथा चाश्वयुजे मासि पञ्चम्यां कुरुनंदन
Sumantu said: In the same way, on the fifth day of the month of Ashvina, O descendant of Kuru—
घृतोदकाभ्यां पयसा स्नपयित्वा विशांपते
After bathing them with ghee, water, and milk, O lord of the people—
यस्त्वस्यां विधिवन्नागाञ्छुचिर्भक्त्या समन्वितः
Whoever, pure and endowed with devotion, properly worships the Nagas on this day—
नागाः प्रीता भवंतीह शांतिमाप्नोति वा विभो
The Nagas become pleased here, and indeed, O mighty one, he attains peace.
इत्येष कथितो वीर पञ्चमीकल्प उत्तमः । यत्रायमुच्यते मंत्रः सर्वसर्पनिषेधकः
Thus, O hero, this excellent procedure for the fifth day has been described, in which this mantra is recited to ward off all serpents.
ॐ कुरुकुल्ले फट् स्वाहा
Om kurukulle phat svaha.
ब्रह्मोवाच व्योम्नः परं तिष्ठति यस्तु मग्नः स मुच्यते रुद्र इहापि दिंडी
Brahma said: He who stands beyond the sky—if he is fallen, he is released, O Rudra, even here, O Dindi.
स्थित्वा पुरा ब्रह्मशिरः किलासौ प्रगृह्य तत्तस्य शिरःकपालम्
Long ago, having taken up Brahma's head, he stood, and that skull became his.
नग्नो यदा दारुवने मुनीनां दृष्ट्वा च तं भैक्ष्यचरं सुरेशम् विहाय दिंडिः स तु तान्सुरर्षींस्ततो रवेर्लोकमथाजगाम
When, naked, he was seen by the sages in the Daru forest, wandering for alms, that lord of the gods—Dindi left them and then went to the world of the Sun.
आगच्छमानं प्रमथास्तमूचुर्देवेश नित्यं भ्रमसे किमर्थम्
As he was coming, the Pramathas said to him: 'O lord of the gods, why do you always wander?'
ते भूय ऊचुः प्रमथास्तमेवमत्रैव तिष्ठस्व रवेः पुरस्तात्
Again, the Pramathas said to him: 'Thus, remain here itself, in front of the Sun.'
इत्येवमुक्तः प्रमथैस्तु रुद्रस्तत्रैव तस्थौ रवितोषणाय
Thus addressed by the Pramathas, Rudra remained there itself to please the Sun.
उक्तः स तुष्टेन ततः सवित्रा प्रीतोस्मि देवागमनात्तवाहम्
He was addressed by Savitṛ, who was pleased, saying: 'I am delighted by your arrival among the gods.'
अष्टादशैते प्रमथास्तु भानोश्चतुर्दशान्ये तु रवे रथस्थाः
These eighteen Pramathas belong to Bhānu, and fourteen others are stationed in the chariot of Ravi.
यक्षौ च सिद्धौ च निशाचरौ चादित्यात्मजावप्सरसां प्रधानौ 1.124.
Among Yakṣas and Siddhas, and among night-wandering beings, there are two sons of Āditya, who are chief among the Apsarases.
इत्यादिदेवप्रवरास्तु सर्वे धात्वर्थशब्दैश्च भवंति सिद्धाः
Thus, all these foremost gods become accomplished by words signifying the meaning of dhātu.
यतश्च कौतुकं ब्रह्मन्नस्माकमिह जायते
Therefore, O Brahman, curiosity arises among us here.
ब्रह्मोवाच भूयस्तव प्रवक्ष्यामि दंडनायकपिंगलौ
Brahma said: I will further tell you about Daṇḍanāyaka and Piṅgala.
मया सह समागम्य पुरा देवैर्विचारितम्
In ancient times, together with me, the gods deliberated.
ते तु लब्धवरा भूत्वा अमात्याद्या ह्यभीक्ष्णशः
Having received boons, those ministers and others repeatedly became powerful.
