यदा सोमदिनयुक्ता भवेत्पंचदशी क्वचित्
Whenever the fifteenth lunar day coincides with the day of Soma (Monday),
तदा स्नानं नरः कुर्यात्पंचगव्यं च सर्षपैः
Then, a person should bathe and perform the rite of pancagavya with mustard seeds.
शूद्रोऽपि परया भक्त्या पाखंडालापवर्जितः
Even a Shudra, with supreme devotion and avoiding heretical speech,
कृतजप्यः स्वभवनमागत्य मधुसूदनम्
Having completed the recitation, he should return to his own house and worship Madhusudana.
सोमाय शांताय नमोऽस्तु पादावनंतनाम्ने ह्यनुजानु जंघे
Obeisance to Soma, the peaceful one, whose name is Pādāvanaṃta; I bow to the knees and shanks.
नमोनमः कामसुखप्रदाय कटिः शशांकस्य समर्चनीया
Repeated salutations to the giver of pleasures and desires; the waist of the moon is to be worshipped.
नमोऽस्तु चन्द्राय मुखं प्रपूज्य हनुर्द्विजानामधिपाय पूज्या 4.206.
Obeisance to Chandra; having worshipped the face, the chin is to be honored as the lord of the twice-born.
नासा च नाथाय वनौषधीनां ह्यानंन्ददायाथ पुनर्भ्रुवोश्च
The nose is the lord of forest herbs, the giver of joy, and again, the eyebrows as well.
नमः समस्ताध्वरवंदिताय कर्णद्वयं दैत्यनिषूदनाय
Salutation to the one worshipped in all sacrifices; the two ears to the slayer of demons.
शिरः शशांकाय नमोऽसुरारेर्विश्वेश्वरायेति नमः किरीटम्
Obeisance to the moon for the head, to the enemy of the Asuras for the crown, and to the lord of the universe.
देवीं च संपूज्य सुगन्धधूपनेवद्यपुष्पादिभिरिंदुपत्नीम्
One should worship the goddess with fragrant incense, fresh flowers, and similar offerings, as one would the consort of the moon.
देयः प्रभाते स हिरण्यवारिकुंभो मनःपापविनाशनाय। संप्राश्य गोमूत्रममांसमन्नमक्षारमष्टावथ विंशतिं च
In the morning, a golden water pot should be given for the removal of mental impurities; after consuming cow urine, food without meat or salt, either eight or twenty portions.
ग्रासान्पयः सर्पियुतानुपोष्य भुक्त्वेतिहासं शृणुयान्मुहूर्तम्
Having eaten morsels mixed with milk and ghee, having fasted, one should listen to a story for a moment.
अम्लानकुब्जानथ सिंदुवारपुष्पं पुनर्नारद मल्लिकायाः
One should offer flowers such as amla, kubja, sinduvāra, punarnava, nārada, and jasmine.
यस्मिन्मासे व्रतादिः स्यात्पुष्पैरभ्यर्चयेद्धरिम्
In whichever month the vow is observed, one should worship Hari with flowers.
एकसंवत्सरं यावदुपोष्य विधिवन्नरः
A person should properly fast for one full year.
रोहिणचंद्रमिथुनं कारयित्वा तु कांचनम् 4.206.
One should fashion a pair of Rohiṇī and Candra from gold.
मुक्ताफलाष्टकयुतं सितनेत्रपटावृतम्
It should be adorned with eight pearls and wrapped in a white cloth.
दद्यान्मंत्रेणे पूर्वाह्ने शालीक्षुफलसंयुतम्
One should give it in the forenoon, accompanied by rice and sugarcane fruits, with a mantra.
सवस्त्रभाजनां धेनुं तथा शंखं च शोभनम्
One should also give a cow with clothing and a vessel, as well as a beautiful conch.
चंद्रोऽयं द्विजरूपेण सभार्य इति कल्पयेत्
One should consider this moon as appearing in the form of a twice-born, together with his wife.
सोमरूपस्य ते तद्वन्ममाभेदोऽस्तु मूर्तिभिः
Let there be no difference between you and the form of Soma in these images.
भुक्तिर्मुक्तिस्तथा भक्तिस्त्वयि यज्ञेऽस्तु मे दृढा
May I have firm enjoyment, liberation, and devotion to you in this sacrifice.
रूपारोग्यायुषामेतद्विधायकमनुत्तमम्
This is the supreme bestower of beauty, health, and longevity.
त्रैलोक्याधिपतिर्भूत्वा शतकल्पशतत्रयम्
Having become the lord of the three worlds, one attains three hundred cycles of a hundred ages.
नारी वा रोहिणी चंद्रशयनं वा समाचरेत्
A woman, Rohiṇī, or one who lies on a lunar bed may perform this.
इति पठति शृणोति वा य इत्थं मधुमथनार्चनमिंदुकीर्तनेन 4.206.
Whoever recites or listens in this way to the worship of Madhumathana and the praise of the moon—
श्रीकृष्णस्य द्वारकागमनवर्णनम् धर्ममूलं यतश्चेदं तस्माद्धर्मपरो भव
The description of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's arrival at Dvārakā: Since this is rooted in dharma, therefore be devoted to dharma.
जानताऽपि मया पार्थ कामार्थौ न प्रकाशितो
Even though I knew, O Partha, I did not reveal the matters of desire and wealth.
कामिनो वर्णयन्कामाँल्लोभं लुब्धस्य वर्णयन्
Describing desires for the passionate, and greed for the greedy—
