वर्जयित्वात्र कमलं तथा कुवलयं विभो
Here, O mighty one, lotus and blue water-lily should be avoided.
कांचनीयापि या माला सा न दुष्यति कर्हिचित्
Even a garland made of gold never becomes impure.
अन्यदर्चासु देवानामन्यद्धार्यं सभासु च 4.205.
For the worship of the gods, one thing is used; for assemblies, another is to be worn.
उदुबरं न खादेत भवार्थी पुरुषोत्तमः
A person seeking prosperity should not eat figs.
पतितः स्यान्नरो राजन्पतितैस्तु सहाचरन्
O king, a man becomes fallen by associating with those who are fallen.
गृहे वा संस्थापितास्ते गृहवृद्धिमभीप्सता
Those who are established in the house, desiring the growth of the household—
भवंत्येते तथा पापास्तथा वै तिलपायिकाः
These are indeed sinful, as are cakes made of sesame.
जलाग्नी चैव बिभृयाद्गृहे नित्यमिति स्थितिः
One should always keep water and fire in the house; this is the rule.
हस्तिपृष्ठेऽश्वपृष्ठे च रथचर्यासु चैव हि
Whether on the back of an elephant, on horseback, or in chariot journeys—
प्रजापालन युक्तश्च न क्षांतिं लभते नृप
A king engaged in the protection of his people does not attain peace.
गांधर्वशास्त्रं विज्ञेयं कला ज्ञेयाश्च भारत
The science of music should be understood, and the arts, O descendant of Bharata, should be known.
एष ते लक्षणोद्देश आचारस्य प्रकीर्तितः
Thus, the enumeration of the characteristics of proper conduct has been declared to you.
आचारो भूतिजनन आचारः कीर्तिवर्धनः 4.205.
Conduct is the source of beings; conduct increases fame.
आगमानां हि सर्वेषामाचारः श्रेष्ठ उच्यत
Indeed, among all the scriptures, conduct is declared to be the highest.
पुण्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं स्वर्ग्यं स्वस्त्ययनं महत्
It brings merit, renown, long life, heaven, and great well-being.
आचार एव नरपुंगव सेव्यमानो धर्मार्थकामफलदो भवतीह पुंसाम्
O best of men, when observed, conduct alone grants the fruits of righteousness, wealth, and desire to people in this world.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे सदाचारधर्मवर्णनं नाम पञ्चाधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira, the two hundred and fifth chapter named 'Description of the Dharma of Good Conduct' is concluded.
रोहिणीचन्द्रशयनव्रतविधिवर्णनम् मुहुर्मुहुर्जन्मनि येन सम्यग्व्रतं मम ब्रूहि तदिंदुमौलेः
Describe to me again and again, in every birth, the proper vow, O moon-crested one.
रहस्यं ते प्रवक्ष्यामि यत्पुराणविदो विदुः
I will tell you the secret which the knowers of the ancient lore have understood.
रोहिणीचन्द्रशयनं नाम व्रतमिहोत्तमम्
Here, the supreme vow called Rohini Chandra-shayana is described.
यदा सोमदिनयुक्ता भवेत्पंचदशी क्वचित्
Whenever the fifteenth lunar day coincides with the day of Soma (Monday),
तदा स्नानं नरः कुर्यात्पंचगव्यं च सर्षपैः
Then, a person should bathe and perform the rite of pancagavya with mustard seeds.
शूद्रोऽपि परया भक्त्या पाखंडालापवर्जितः
Even a Shudra, with supreme devotion and avoiding heretical speech,
कृतजप्यः स्वभवनमागत्य मधुसूदनम्
Having completed the recitation, he should return to his own house and worship Madhusudana.
सोमाय शांताय नमोऽस्तु पादावनंतनाम्ने ह्यनुजानु जंघे
Obeisance to Soma, the peaceful one, whose name is Pādāvanaṃta; I bow to the knees and shanks.
नमोनमः कामसुखप्रदाय कटिः शशांकस्य समर्चनीया
Repeated salutations to the giver of pleasures and desires; the waist of the moon is to be worshipped.
नमोऽस्तु चन्द्राय मुखं प्रपूज्य हनुर्द्विजानामधिपाय पूज्या 4.206.
Obeisance to Chandra; having worshipped the face, the chin is to be honored as the lord of the twice-born.
नासा च नाथाय वनौषधीनां ह्यानंन्ददायाथ पुनर्भ्रुवोश्च
The nose is the lord of forest herbs, the giver of joy, and again, the eyebrows as well.
नमः समस्ताध्वरवंदिताय कर्णद्वयं दैत्यनिषूदनाय
Salutation to the one worshipped in all sacrifices; the two ears to the slayer of demons.
शिरः शशांकाय नमोऽसुरारेर्विश्वेश्वरायेति नमः किरीटम्
Obeisance to the moon for the head, to the enemy of the Asuras for the crown, and to the lord of the universe.
