दत्त्वा तु भुंक्ते शिष्टेभ्यः क्षुधितेभ्यस्तथा गृही
Having given, the householder eats, also to the worthy and the hungry.
नासंदीसंस्थिते पात्रे नादेशे च नरेश्वर
Not in a vessel placed on a seat, nor in an improper place, O lord of men.
अश्नीयात्तन्मयो भूत्वा पूर्वं तु मधुरं रसम् ।। 4.205.
He should eat, having become composed, first the sweet-tasting food.
मार्दवं पुरुषोश्नन्वै मध्ये च कठिनाशनम्
A man should eat soft food first, and in the middle, hard food.
दिवाधानासु वसति रात्रौ च दधिसक्तुषु
During the day, he resides at the fire; at night, with curds and parched grain.
अनिंद्यं भक्षयेन्नित्यं वाग्यतोऽन्नमकुत्सयन्
He should always eat blameless food, being restrained in speech, not disparaging the food.
यथावत्पुनराचामेत्पाणी प्रक्षाल्य यत्नतः
One should properly perform ācamana again, carefully washing the hands.
प्राणापानसमानानामुदानव्यानयोस्तथा
This is for the prāṇa, apāna, samāna, udāna, and vyāna as well.
अगस्तिरग्निर्वडवानलश्च भुक्तं प्रपात्रं जरयत्वशेषम्
May Agastya, Agni, and the submarine fire consume what remains of the food and the vessel.
इत्युच्चार्य स्वहस्तेन पीरमार्ज्य तथोदरम्
Having spoken thus, one should wipe the mouth and the stomach with one's own hand.
संध्यायां पथिकः कश्चित्समागच्छति भारत
At dusk, if a traveler arrives, O Bhārata,
ततश्चान्नप्रदानेन शयनेन च पार्थिव
Then, by giving food and a bed, O King,
तदेवाष्टगुणं पुंसां सूर्ये हंसमुखे गते 4.205.
That very act becomes eightfold in merit for men when the sun enters the sign of Haṃsa.
नाविशालां न वा भग्नां नासमां मलिनां न च
Not in a spacious, broken, uneven, or dirty place.
प्राच्यां दिशि शिरः शस्तं याम्यायामपि भूपते
It is proper to place the head toward the east or also toward the south, O King.
ऋतावुपगमः शस्तः सपत्न्यां ह्यवनीपते
Approach to a co-wife is proper during the season, O Lord of the Earth.
न चास्नातां स्त्रियं गच्छेद्गर्भिणीं न रजस्वलाम्
He should not approach a woman who has not bathed, who is pregnant, or who is menstruating.
नादक्षिणां नान्यकामां नाकामां नान्ययोषितम्
Not one who is from the south, not one who desires another, not one who is unwilling, nor another man's wife.
स्नातः सुगन्धधृग्धृष्टो न श्रांतः क्षुधितोऽपि वा
Having bathed, fragrant, and clean, not fatigued or even hungry.
चतुर्दश्यां तथाष्टम्यां पंचदश्यां च पर्वसु
On the fourteenth, eighth, and fifteenth lunar days, and on festival days,
क्षुर कर्मणि चांते च स्त्रीसंभोगे च भारत
At the end of shaving, and in sexual union, O Bhārata,
गुरोः पतिव्रतानां च तथा यज्ञतपस्विनाम्
With the teacher, with devoted wives, and with those engaged in sacrifice and austerity,
युगपज्जलमग्निं च बिभृयान्न विचक्षणः 4.205.
One who is not discerning should not simultaneously carry water and fire.
नाचक्षीत धयंतीं गां जलं नांजलिना पिबेत्
One should not point out a cow that is being milked, nor drink water with joined hands.
दासं शपेन्न वै क्रुद्धः सर्वबन्धूनमत्सरी
One should not curse a servant in anger, nor bear jealousy toward any relatives.
नोर्ध्वं तु पत्तनद्वारं निरीक्ष्य पर्यटेन्नरः
A man should not wander about looking toward the northern city gate.
शेषाहे त्वपि शेषांश्च वश्यात्मा यो निरस्यति
He who, with self-control, avoids the remnants of food at the end of the meal and other leftovers—
वृथा मांसं न खादेत पृष्ठमांसं तथैव च
One should not eat meat without purpose, nor the flesh from the back of an animal.
संयावं कृशरं मांसं शष्कुलीपायसं तथा
Likewise, one should avoid porridge, rice cooked with milk, meat, cakes, and sweet rice pudding.
अजाश्च नावकर्षेत ता बहिर्धारयंति च
One should not drag goats, and they should be kept outside.
