न चातिरक्तवासाः स्याच्चित्रासितधरोऽपि वा
One should not wear excessively red garments, nor those that are variegated or black.
स्त्रीं कृशां नावजानीयाद्दीर्घमायुर्जिजीविषुः
A woman who is thin should not be disregarded by one who desires a long life.
हन्यादाशीविषः क्रुद्धो यावत्स्पृशति दंष्ट्रया 4.205.
An angry snake kills with its bite as soon as it touches.
ब्राह्मणः सकुलं हन्याद्ध्याने नावेक्षितेन च
A Brahmin may destroy his entire lineage through meditation if not properly observed.
नाज्ञातैः सह गंतव्यं नैकेन बहुभिः सह
One should not travel with strangers, neither alone nor with many.
रोहते चाग्निना दग्धं वनं परशुना हतम्
A forest burned by fire or struck by an axe grows again.
नास्तिक्यं वेदनिंदा च देवतानां च कुत्सनम्
Atheism, reviling the Vedas, and disparaging the deities are forbidden.
न ब्राह्मणं परिवदेन्न नक्षत्राणि दर्शयेत्
One should not criticize a Brahmin nor show the stars to him.
तेजो निष्ठीव्य वासश्च परिधायाचमेद्बुधः
A wise person should wear clothes that have been spat upon by energy and then partake of food.
तत्र नित्यं वसेत्प्राज्ञः कृतकृत्यः पतौ सुखम्
There, the wise who has fulfilled his duties should always reside happily with the master.
यत्र स्त्रियोऽमत्सरिण्यस्तत्र वासः सुखोदयः
Where women are not envious, there living brings happiness.
यत्रौषधान्यशेषाणि वसेत्तत्र विचक्षणः
Where all medicinal herbs are found, the discerning person should reside.
जिगीषुः पूर्ववैरं च जनश्च विरतोत्सवः 4.205.
One who desires victory, past enmity, and people who refrain from festivals.
ऋणप्रदाता वैद्यश्च श्रोत्रियः सजला नदी
A lender, a physician, a learned Brahmin, and a river with water.
न च रात्रौ महाराज दीर्घराज्यमभीप्सता
O great king, one who desires a long reign should not act at night.
न च मित्रं प्रकुर्वीत हेमकारं कदाचन
One should never make a goldsmith a friend.
अप्रशस्तानि चत्वारि ये च वृक्षाः सकंटकाः
There are four things that are inauspicious, and trees that have thorns.
नाश्नंति पितरस्तस्य यत्र कुक्कुरकुक्कटौ
Where dogs and chickens are present, the ancestors do not partake of offerings.
अतस्तेषां तले भुजन्नश्नुते पूयशोणितम्
Then, in their lower realms, O Bhujan, they consume pus and blood.
सुवासिनीं गुर्विणीं च वृद्धां बालातुरांस्तथा
A woman in her courses, a pregnant woman, an elderly woman, a child, and the sick—
अघं स केवलं भुंक्ते बद्धगोवाहनादिकम्
He alone partakes of sin who binds cattle for sacrifice and the like.
वैश्वदेवं ततः कुर्याद्यावदाहुतयः क्रमात्
After that, one should perform the Vaiśvadeva rite, offering oblations in due order.
तृतीयां चैव गुह्येभ्यः कश्यपाय तथा पराम् 4.205.
The third oblation is indeed for the secret beings, and likewise another for Kaśyapa.
पूर्वाख्यातं मया यत्ते नित्यकर्मक्रियाविधौ
What I have previously declared to you regarding the procedure of daily rites—
प्राच्यादिक्रमयोगेन इंद्रादीनां बलिं क्षिपेत्
According to the prescribed order, one should offer bali to Indra and the others.
विश्वेभ्यश्चैव देवेभ्यो विश्वभूतेभ्य एव च
And also to all the gods, and indeed to all beings.
ततश्चाग्रं समुद्धृत्य हंतकारोपकल्पितम्
Then, taking up the foremost portion prepared for the sacrificer—
दत्त्वा विधिभ्यो देवेभ्यो गुरुभ्यः सुश्रुताय च
Having given, according to rule, to the gods, to the teachers, and to the learned—
नैकवस्त्रधरोऽश्नीयान्नार्द्रपादो महीपते
One should not eat wearing a single garment, nor with wet feet, O King.
प्राङ्मुखोदङ्मुखो वापि न चैवान्यमना नरः
One should face east or north, and not eat with a distracted mind.
